The effort from this team has been terrible pretty much all year.

The Norfolk State defeat, according to Kenpom, was the worst loss we've had in 18 years since they started rating teams.

About the only explanation for losing to a team 200 spots below you in NET ranking is effort.

Bryce Drew out at Vanderbilt after going 0-18 in SEC play.

I suspect Matt McMahon up the road at Murray will be their first call.

The Columbia sports talk station is the flagship for the Gamecock radio network. Just before the SEC tourney one of their hosts, Heath Cline, was talking about how there was mutual desire in Tuscaloosa for a divorce. He made it sound like Johnson was looking at a NBA front office type job rather than continuing to coach.

He was. I heard through the grapevine a while back that Johnson had interviewed for some NBA positions back in December...before conference play even started.

I would guess there's two dynamics there. 1) I don't think the powers that be really wanted him here long term. 2) Surely the players knew he wasn't going to stick around and so I can understand why they didn't play hard for him.

With that said, I don't think Avery wanted to give up a nearly $3M a year gig until he had something else lined up. The AD didn't want to pay an $8M buyout so everything was in limbo until it all came to a head the other night. About 2K fans bought tickets to one of the worst showings in recent history. At that point, I don't think the situation was recoverable. Fans weren't going to show up next year, and so it became a financial decision.

Rumors are that they will pursue Steve Prohm, a Bama graduate.

Which would open up Iowa State for Fred Hoiberg (again).

A school would be silly not to hire UB's coach away.

There is an ebb and flow to whether being the guy at a small program is better than being just a guy at one of the majors. Whether you want to be at and maintain a Gonzaga or Wichita State or roll the dice and take a shot at UCLA.

After seeing how both Temple and St. Joe’s handled their situations, I can understand why someone might want to give it up at a place where they can be the program. Because it may just be that college basketball is just constant performance appraisal and tire-kicking by administrators who are under the same conditions. So, why not aim high?

I wonder if we’re due some shocking coaching news soon, and I suspect UB will be among those looking for replacements (again).

I give props to Tulane for trying but honestly, Hunter can do way better. But I’m sure Tulane opened the checkbook and it’s an upgrade in competition. Good luck to the Green Wave.

Georgia State's AD Charlie Cobb passed over Matt McMahon in favor of Jason Capel for the App State job when he was our AD. I'm afraid that he could potentially screw over Georgia State like he did our program. We're still clawing back from that blunder.

RE: 2019 MBB Coaching Carousel
Rose retiring from BYU....

Someone brought up point about BYU- going independent in football has really hurt the basketball program. Can't say that I disagree. It's really not helped the football program and in basketball- they've made the tourney out of the WCC 3 times in 8 years(and none in last 4 years)- after Rose made the tourney in 5 of first 6 years while in MWC(all 5 times with better seeds). Cleveland made it in 3 of his final 5 years. So 8 of last 11 years in MWC they made it compared to 3 of 8 years in WCC.

So is BYU going to offer to double or triple Craig Smith's salary?

The name I was hearing was Mark Pope from Utah Valley.

For Utah St- going to BYU right now is frankly close to a lateral move at best....
