They would love to do it also throw them some free tickets so their friends and family can attend. Where is this NIU Dekalb/Sycamore Communiversity? NIU Athletics lets do something come up with some ideas, we have the worst attendance in the MAC for basketball. It’s not all on Monty!

Just for the record, is the administration's rep on here passing this post on to STF or someone else among the higher ups?
While I question dekalb222's devotion, love and support for Monty, this is an outstanding suggestion that was once done in the old Evans Field House days; granted, this admin and many on here don't care to read or hear about the past. As dekalb222 recommends, every NIU men's or women's basketball game during the holiday break is an opportunity to have a local high school pep band, dance or pom pom squad, etc. be a guest performer. The locals -- DeKalb and Sycamore -- would be best, but why not even reach out to an Aurora, Elgin or Naperville school?
The NCAA probably has rules against it, but what about an NIU - prep doubleheader for an Olympic sport? Imagine the Convo spotlight on the raised platform with NIU's wrestling mat as the Huskies take on a major MAC foe right after the annual DeKalb-Sycamore rivalry, or even a Sycamore vs. Kaneland or DeKalb vs. Kaneland match?

So many ideas on this board sound so great. But what about insurance, transportation, public education rules and regulations, etc, etc. We were all crying about the football schedule and Sean came thru with scedulepalooza and we were all in a dither. Now some on this board are saying they don't want these big names but they want EIU, Normal and WIU etal. There just is no pleasing us. As JFK once said don't ask what your country can do for you, but what can you do for (NIU) your country.

On a normal weekday game day, the box office is open all day. This game occurred during the university holiday shutdown. That’s why the box office was open only 2 hours prior To the scheduled tip.

A reasonable individual would understand instead of going off without the correct information.

Why not have a stuff animal charity day.
Fans bring stuff animals to the game and at halftime they try to throw them in a mini hoop at half court for a prize. All stuff animals can go to Kish hospital.
They do this at a minor league hockey game after the first goal. They just throw them on the ice.
It has gotten bigger every year.

Saw a promo for Dekalb county residents can get into both games for only $5. I forget what game, but glad to see that finally come out. Others on here have mentioned doing this exact thing for football. Hopefully they try it this year

That's a cool idea (no pun intended, for once.)

Probably 6 or 7 years ago there was a DeKalb vs Batavia wrestling meet before an NIU meet.

It would be great to see DeKalb vs a ranked west suburban team at the Convo next year.

You are right, in a sense.

That is STF's job, scheduling. Lining up associations with HS, not his job. Getting the people to do that, or even hiring the the person to find the person, his job.

That is the problem. I am sick of hearing "budget" for everything. The athletic department had a ton of dedicated people leave after the Orange Bowl. People who cared, if only for doing their job and moving on. But they gave a good impression, got results.

I am sure there are a some still there. Perhaps the need direction, ideas. Perhaps it's a numbers game. If you can't hire people full time I am sure there are plenty of people within the school and even outside of it that would settle for a low paying internship.

There are people out there and a way. In my honest opinion, NIU is not finding it much of the time.

RE: Northwestern/Dekalb Cheer
FYI...nearly all non-coaching graduate assistants and part-time help were eliminated from athletics last year. Some departments had their staffs cut almost in half due to this. So yes, a couple of hours on a Saturday morning or during a university break does mean a lot to people already working 50-60 hours a week who have had one 3% raise (and that was only in September when President Freeman mandated that across the board for entire university operating staff) in the last 6-7 years with many still making less than 40K per year.

Also yes, there is a little something called NCAA COMPLIANCE which prohibits doing pretty much anything with high schools - across all sports. Wrestling did hold an elementary school meet prior to one of its meets earlier this year. Marketing tried to get bands from DeKalb/Sycamore but did not fit in their schedules as they had a competition or also were told they were on break. Canned food drives have been held - free admission with a can prior to holidays, local dance groups are brought out. There are different "nights" or promotions, concession deals, you name it, for pretty much every game.

Anyone who thinks the staff isn't working hard or doesn't care is flat out wrong.

Are these the official thoughts of the Athletic Department?

I don’t think anybody was trying to say that the NIU staff doesn’t care or doesn’t work hard
