Notre Dame took Ohio State's spot in the playoff because ND would have had their ass whipped in Charlotte. That does not bother me.

THIS. I predict the only change which will come about as a result of this year's playoffs will be playoff expansion to 8 with the P5 champs guaranteed auto-bids (or a slim chance of 4 teams, champs-only -- but everyone knows that would drive Notre Dame into the ACC for football).

If B1G are smart, they will advocate the 8 team play off to prevent ND from joining ACC. And hope a Black Swan event driving ND to join B1G.

B1G should know by now that ND would never join B1G.

RE: Time to ask Notre Dame join ACC in football?
Unless something drastic happens, there's 0 chance ND will be joining the conference in football. Only if the FBS as a whole decided that independent teams didn't have access to the playoffs or to major bowls would ND consider it. But if ND is under contract to join the ACC if they join any football conference, why would the other conferences vote to give the ACC that gift? Notre Dame will always be able to get a TV contract, and they'll always at least have access to the playoffs and major bowls. The fact that they got beaten in the playoffs is proof only that they they don't have to join a conference to make it to the playoffs.

If ND joins a conference in football they'll never even sniff the CFP again.

Keep UofL, add Cincy, and you can deliver the message any way you want.

Nah, we're good, but thanks for your continued interest.

Well, some of you are good, really good. But others? Not so much. With your permission, I'll maintain my interest, and we'll keep proving that we can do more with less.

Very unlikely that Notre Dame joins the ACC for football (at least, not while they're still good).

As for Cincinnati - IF the ACC ever adds another team not already in another P5 conference (and not named Notre Dame), I think UC is probably at the top of that list... but make no mistake, it's the secondary list.

I want to hear your reasons.

The switch to a 6 team or 8 team conference won't be easy because of the contractual arrangement and logisitics.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...ht-expect/

On the other hand, champs only four team playoff can be implemented right away.

Thats a good point that I have often thought about. I just cant see the BIG wanting to giftwrap ND to the ACC.

BTW; Welcome to the board!

Yes, that's one to look at it.

However in their attempt to stick it to ND and the ACC they have created a situation where ND's special status is reinforced and as it did this year, allows them to steal a playoff bid from the B10. If they want to screw ND, make them go through Clemson, FSU, Miami, and VT all the while continuing to play USC and Stanford. In addition to that, they enrich the SEC because the SEC CAN get two into the playoff.

The smart play for the B10 is to force ND into the ACC for 8 games. Then ND ceases to be special. Hand in hand they should allow a conference playoff and three divisions. This would allow them to expand by one with Oklahoma, or four with OU, Texas, Kansas, and one other. With a western division that consisted of OU, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota that would be a tonic to a 15 school B10.

With a western division consisting of Texas, Kansas, OU, Nebraska, Illinois, and one other that would be more than a tonic - that would be a stab at the SEC, leaving them only Oklahoma State or Texas Tech to go to 15.

As long as the Big wants to have its cake and eat it too, ND and the ACC troll them.

Houston probably makes more money for the ACC. Costs more money for travel, but opens the western Gulf Coast.

I think of it from the football schools point of view - where would FSU, Clemson, VT, GT, State, and Miami most want to play and then you look at places like Cincy, Houston, New Orleans, Orlando, Annapolis, Tampa, and Storrs. Right off the bat among G-5 schools Storrs falls to the bottom of the barrel. Then if you look at the population growth would focus on Orlando, Tampa, and Houston. Finally you might look at what's novel and new.

I think the G-5 pecking order for the ACC is probably - Houston, Navy, Cincy, USF/UCF then nada.

Isnt Houston academics horrible, While Cincy is very good? Just cant see the ACC taking in another project until Louisville academics get up to snuff, similar to what happened with FSU.

If we invite any school in Texas, it will be Texas.
Cincinnati only has a chance if ESPN wants all of the ACC to be located in the ETZ.

All of the ACC is not in the ETZ now.

Parts of Florida, Kentucky, and Indiana are in the CTZ. Part of FSU's DMA reach goes into the CTZ in Southern Alabama. ND is the same with Gary/Chicago.

Houston is higher rated in ARWU than Cincy, UConn, Oregon, LSU, Louisville, West Va, South Carolina, TT, MSU, BC, Oklahoma, etc. Now ARWU is a ranking system more in line with heavy research, but more to the point, no Houston's academics are not horrible. Some of the factors that US News uses swamp Houston because no high school guidance counselor is going to rank Houston over Rice, UT-Austin, TAMU, or the Baylor College of Medicine. http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2018.html

The U of Houston is really only about 60 years old. It was founded in 1927 as a two year college by the Houston Board of Education. That's the pedigree problem. In that sense it's a lot like FSU from an age standpoint.

Go to 20 teams with 10 team divisions made up of 5 team pods that rotate every year. Devour the Big12 to get a western pod:
Texas
TCU
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Kansas

ND is content to take their beatings as a partial member, so take WVU as 20. Done.

What will ACC respond if the earlier report is true that Northwestern and Purdue are not happy with B1G and asked to join ACC?

Don't know about Purdue but Chicago is a big city and will add lots of eyeballs to ACC Network. And they are division champion this year.

It does not matter. What does matter is that all of the schools are in the ETZ, which means that all of the start times are uniform. And maybe more importantly the games end on the same schedule. A 9 pm basketball start in Chicago (CTZ) would put State back in Raleigh an hour later than if the game was a 9 pm start in South Bend (ETZ).
Same time zone means easier scheduling for TV and less adjustment for players.

I agree with Lance about the campuses being in the ETZ, and the importance of that fact... but if the ACC truly had the opportunity to grab Purdue and Northwestern those would be automatic, right? I mean, maybe even more so than if Maryland and South Carolina wanted to come back (look out for low-flying pigs!!!)
