RE: MBB - Game 14 - Towson
Best allround win of the season.

*Tough, aggressive defense for almost the entire 40 minutes. Audige is Tarpey on steroids...great defense, had to tip of touch six or seven Towson passes. But has the complete game...shooting last two games has been terrific, savvy passer and rebounder, rare speed & strength. 13 points,
4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals And one helacious thunder dunk!

*Milon had his best total game of the year...shot good shots, including key baskets, hit 5 of 6 from foul line and really hustled on defense.

*Team defense was smothering for almost entire game: really on top of Towson shooters.

*Knight, despite foul problems, was again a force and Pierce, for second consecutive game, was all-conference. Even if he doesn't score, Knight draws so much attention others get open.
Pierce and Audige are a tough combo.

*Owens plays tough defense, handles the ball well, is silky smooth fast, and scored six key points.

*When it got down to two points we hunkered down and took over the game.

The team may be coming together with this new lineup having this big guard Audige out there. I’m happy for them.

RE: MBB - Game 14 - Towson
The 3-2 zone that the Tribe is running, at it's core, is a triangle, with Chase at the top, and Pierce and Nathan at the base. Think about that. What an active, mobile group of three.

Chase, Pierce, and LJ running in a transition offense is deadly.

Another good crowd- 3,300.

While it may not show in stat lines, everybody who played made major contributions at various stages of the game.

Finally, watching both games in person this weekend, there is a will to win on the part of several players that's just driving this team right now. Last year, there was some pixie dust at the start of the year on a team with no depth. This year, there is depth and desire ... and this team is very athletic.

Frame this caption from Tribeathletics and break glass in case of a playoff run:

Defense Leads Men's Basketball to Win over Towson, 2-0 CAA Start

No traffic down or back and my Tribe won. Man, what a day. PS, and my son *finally* won a halftime competition!

2-0, just the start we needed. The 2 road games this week are just as important because the Tribe gets Hofstra and Northeastern at the Kap after that. Unfortunately, classes won't have begun yet, but maybe some students will be back. Even without them, 2 good crowds this weekend.

This feels untrue. Doesn't Towson constantly have players transferring in and out?

I agree with your comment ... but this is the direct copy, verbatim, from Towson's game notes for today's game:
Perfection When It Comes to Graduation
- Towson has a perfect men's basketball graduation rate under head coach Pat Skerry.
- The Tigers are 21-for-21.

Love your comment, Bubbadog57, "Audige is Tarpey on steroids." Audige is spiderman defensively. Every time he makes a steal and takes it the other way for a dunk, I hear people seated in my section say, "Terry Tarpey." And as the game continues to slow down for Audige, his passing is getting better, too. He's got the offensive package as well, obviously. Kid has a chance to be one of the better all-around players to ever suit up for the Tribe.

I imagine that is using the GSR. From the Towson site, touting their high GSR:

The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.

The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success. The federal graduation rate, however, remains the only measure to compare student-athletes with the general student body.

(I think Rowley was the other one on the floor.) I thought Harvey looked pretty good although his stat line shows all zeros. My perception is that we got some stops and rebounds due to his battling underneath. Audige is playing very much like a ROY candidate and I didn't see anything wrong with Owens' play. I think Scott has slipped a bit vs. Loewe in league play but not by much.

I wish Coach would play Blair instead of Harvey.

Best complete game of the season from start to finish. Got killed on the boards giving up 15 offensive rebounds...but you gotta love the ball movement today with 22! assists. Chase’s dunk was sick! On the other hand, we are going to have to put Quinn and Jihar on a milk carton pretty soon. Big road trip this week...could we start 4-0 in league play?

MBB - Game 14 - Towson
Refereeing inconsistency isn't a new thing in college basketball. Last night's calls & no calls on rebounds was driving me crazy. All anyone can hope for is consistency. As expected, Towson was physically going after rebounds on both ends. So much so, that I recall guys getting bumped out of the play or getting climbed over even when in rebounding position. Some refs let that play go. I get it. But then I think about calls against us for the slightest of contact trying to secure a rebound. Rail-thin Paul Rowley being called on a rebound comes to mind. Same applied to contact with the guards. They have physical guards who create contact going to the hoop. Loewe was called for a couple mystery calls where he made the mistake of actually establishing position. As a ref, you can't have it both ways.
I know that is Towson's game, and offensive rebounds and physical play are key to their offense, but man is it frustrating to watch.

This was infuriating. The refs were probably getting tired of hearing about this discrepancy from us, but we let them know.

Owens was pretty highly recruited, albeit mid-majors, out of high school and has played to reasonable expectations.

Audige was way under-recruited, save an offer from St Joes, and has exceeded reasonable expectations.

It won't surprise me a bit to see both start on a regular basis by February. Milon has a sweet stroke when he's on and I'm taking nothing away from him, but Audige provides an ability to defend and has really developed as a passer and fast break option.

By the way, Rusthoven was at the game yesterday. He looked great and I'm happy he is still interested in Tribe basketball. I always thought he'd make a great assistant.

if a fit, he’d be good with post players. Audige is settling in. He’s got pedigree, he’s big, will likely get bigger, willing to defend, can score, and has those Hollywood good looks. We are lucky to have him. He should also help with recruits visiting etc.

I like our coaching staff but I don’t think any of them has a background in post play. That is why I hoped Harrison would stay on as a GA.

I think Chase starts the rest of the year/career ... Rowley is best off the bench and we need/are a better team with Chase on the floor. Him and Justin running the break together is fun and exciting. Chase is just scratching the surface and getting better.

LJ is a more all around player than Milon and will play more on the nights Matt is off. When Matt is on like yesterday, and locked in on both ends, Matt plays more. Chase can also get in foul trouble so having LJ as an option to sub in for him is great. LJ is gonna help us win games down the stretch. He has the potential to be a microwave off the bench.
