I disagree. I don’t think people have to try to get excited. It will be a great atmosphere at Huskie stadium.

In large numbers excited? or just the 20 ISU trolls getting excited that come to this board? You think the average Huskie fan is excited to see Illinois State as one of the few home games of the year? Again, nothing against ISU specifically, nothing wrong with scheduling FCS, but maybe it will be a problem when you overlay it with an already anemic home schedule. I have a bad feeling season ticket enrollment next year will be a huge eye opener for NIU atheltics

Where the fan base is now... I do... we are a regional institution with kids that have friends that go to other directionals and have family that went to other directionals ... playing an in state fcs and 3 p5s is great

While it doesn’t do much for sos and could be seen as a trap game, I love the idea of playing ISU. It’s the school in state that most closely compares to NIU and has plenty of local kids. I do think plenty of ISU alums from the west burbs would come out to that game.

I think our alumni and current student base will be more excited about playing ISU than any MAC team.

He might as well wait and jump to niu in few years. I like the idea of getting a solid FCS coach next. Better than D3 o line coach.

I like the in state fcs each year. Then 2 G5 and 1 P5 max.

1 local FCS, 1 interesting G5, 2 P5 as long as we're stuck in the MAC is the ideal OOC.

You know what would be great is bringing in SEMO, which just won a playoff game. Tuke could even give Carey some pointers on preparing for bowls! 05-duck

Maybe students, but I don't think majority of alumni. The Illinois State game on top of the ever dwindling MAC home schedule is the reason I am not renewing next season. Not sure if my thinking applies to bulk of alumni though, maybe I am in minority. I thought about renewing just to renew, but my hope is that a major shrink in season ticket sales will open up some eyes that if a course correction is not made soon, there will be nothing left.

Is the gripe about ISU because they are FCS? Other then that doesnt ISU pretty much rival NIU in size for a university and the offerings? I hear their enrollment continues to go up!

All true. ISU has a slightly larger enrollment and a much larger endowment. It's also older than NIU and IMO the more popular university with high schoolers. NIU kind of holds that FBS/FCS thing over their head as a way to keep them "below us".

I say let a rivalry ensue!

I guess we should get used to it, this will be our rival going forward with it a part of Fraziers vision of FCS membership

How much disparity do you really have between the MVC and the MAC?

RE: Illinois State? What?!
Not saying one is better than the other, but they have different missions. NIU is a more comprehensive university with programs like law and engineering and is more research focused while ISU focuses on teaching. For instance NIU is one of 90 schools nationally in the Universities Research Association and in October announced a partnership with U of I in sustainability research. In that respect NIU is trying more to emulate the larger schools. FBS football is indicative of that I think.

ISU has had opportunities to jump to I-A but declined. They've tried to expand their academic offerings but have been historically blocked by U of I alums in the legislature. They expect to get engineering soon though.

ISU has been eating into NIU's enrollment the better part of the last decade because there's a perception that NIU is less safe, I think because the Chicago media like to report crime in DeKalb more than in Bloomington. But fact is DeKalb actually has a lower violent crime rate than Bloomington (and Champaign and Carbondale).

There is far less disparity between MVC and MAC than between the MAC and the SEC and BIG 10. NDSU cannot get a BIG 10 team to schedule them, they are that good. They would be at the very top of the MAC, and they have a far better game atmosphere than any MAC school. They average nearly 20,000 per game

It's just depressing when you play your home opener against ISU, and it's one of our few home games for the entire year. Seems like our fans are satisfied with it though. I thought when Frazier said FCS route is where he wanted to go that he would get some resistance from fans. That is obviously not the case. Heck the way NIU is trajecting under Carey, I may have to concede FCS does make sense. I have pretty much given up. One advantage is that it would allow more resources and fan focus to go to basketball, which in the long run is probably more sustainable

When did Frazier say he wanted to go FCS??

North Dakota State would be an excellent addition for the MAC. They’d be the heavy favorites off the bat.

It's a real stretch to suggest that scheduling ISU as NIU's loan nonconference home game in 2019 is evidence of STF's desire to go the FCS route. He has consistently scheduled strong/interesting non-conference opponents the last few years both home and away, and that trend will continue in the coming years. In 2020 we'll have two nonconference opponents in DeKalb, including BYU. 2021 brings in two more, including Wyoming. Vandy is at Huskie Stadium in 2022, along with EIU. Tulsa's in DeKalb in 2023 and USF in 2025. ISU and EIU should be a draw for fans from both schools and hopefully generate sizable crowds.
