RE: CUSAbbs Midseason Basketball Poll
UTEP is playing 2 walk-ons significant minutes and has 1 senior, 2 sophomores, and 4 freshmen playing 30+ minutes. The team is dangerous as was shown when they were leading at Marquette and against an NMSU team that lost to Kansas by 2. This makes them a team that could beat every other team in the conference, and at the same time lose to everyone.

UTEP can beat anyone because they were leading against a team who lost to Kansas by 2? Seriously?

I also said UTEP could lose to everyone in the conference. UTEP has played well against some good teams but has also played like a team of freshmen and sophomores. I never said they would beat everyone. Just that UTEP is a dangerous team. UTEP is like a box of chocolates this year.

I’m convinced. UTEP 68, ODU 62. Book it.

Yes, but we expect Nelson to come back sooner than later. I expect he will become the teams biggest cheerleader in an attempt to get back in good graces. I think our game agaisnt 16th ranked Wisconsin tomorrow will tell everyone whch direction WKU is headed. We have been without two others Matthew Horton 6’11 big man and our best shooter Gambrell. Horton (foot) has missed the last few weeks and Gambrell just came back from a pre season injury and is working on getting into the line up

Schedule favors ODU and I say the conference race comes down to ODU and Western, if and at this point a big if...

Western comes together as a team.

Right now I agree with the below...assuming Western becomes a team, quickly. And start going to their AA and NA meetings

WKU much more talented then record indicates. I think the team bought in to their own preseason hype. They have learned they can't just show up. Today vs #15/16 Wisconsin will be a measuring stick.

Well since you asked...

My predictions are for the final results of the CUSA tournament. This is a prediction, not a ranking of the team’s current level.

I have not watched as much early season play this year as I did last year. But this collection of freshmen and transfers has true potential to gel into a title contender. Most fans will tell you it won’t be this year, we’ve still got work to do... but I’ve seen enough flashes of brilliance to believe it will all start to click this season, and in time to make the title run.
The team is already in CUSA’s top echelon in 3 pointers and rebounding. We’ve played a solid “middle-ground” OOC which has built confidence but also helped prepare for the conference round-robin.
We only have two returning contributors from last year, but one of them leads the conference in FT%. The other main returner has dramatically improved his FG% by 8 points and 3PT% by 16 points. He’s now hitting 42+% from 3 point range.
This is a team that is finding its way, learning from each other, and coming together quickly. Since the finals break we’re 2-2 including a tough OT loss. But we also notched a road win against a respectable UT-Rio Grande Valley team that already has a couple skins on the wall of its own. In the last three games our cumulative freshman “minutes” have increased dramatically, and at UTRGV the class scored all but 10 of our points as we had four freshmen in double figures.
We also have a 4-0 exhibition record dating back to a trip to Spain where we got to play against an opponent with some NBA talent.
Will we gel immediately with our conference opener later this afternoon against a hot UNT squad? I do expect us to show well today but I’m not counting on the W in the opener. I do expect us to split our home-and-home with our travel partner, though.
I don’t even think we’ll qualify for the top bracket in the “bonus play” round. But I do think that by March we’ll make quick work of our bonus play group and enter the tournament as a 6 or 7 seed. But with the hot hand (and a much deeper bench than any recent Rice team including 2016-17’s 20-game winners) we will set up to win 4 games in four days in Frisco to claim the title.
We have at least 9 guys on this year’s roster who could have been everyday starters on last year’s mostly forgettable season. I think that it goes without saying that our freshman starters will improve dramatically as the season goes on and turn this team into a tough out against every opponent. But if my prediction comes true it will also be due to the freshmen coming off the bench exhibiting similar improvement. The potential is there and I’ve seen a number of players already take similar strides under Coach Pera.

And if “it” doesn’t happen until next year I’ll still say ‘I told y’all so’.

But I think the ingredients are already in place for this to happen in March 2019.

(Btw I’ve no problem with NET ranking us #12 based on the season to date but I do bristle when I see the coaches, Massey, and many fans on here pick us #14. Subtle distinction but it’s the difference between a Frisco berth and staying home again. Hopefully that will serve as good bulletin board material)

P.S. However I can’t logically defend App State as #15 so please remove them from my prediction:)

Western comes together as a team.

Right now I agree with the below...assuming Western becomes a team, quickly. And start going to their AA and NA meetings

I agree that this list looks pretty close. I think there is a VERY HIGH probability that Old Dominion wins the regular season. They have a very good team and as you said a very favorable schedule. I do think it is possible that they fizzle down the stretch though. They will not have played any of the top conference teams on the road until late in the season. That can give them a false sense of confidence. When you play a team on the road you get their best shot. ODU will not have to face that (at least against a top team) until February. They will play @ UAB on 2/7 and they will have to play two of the top teams on the road in the schedule TBD. That could be bad for confidence heading into the tournament (see MTSU's late season losses last year).

WKU is a wild card. We are still EXTREMELY talented, just very young. Our highs are VERY high and our lows are pretty darn low. We have to learn consistency. If we do we will be very competitive. BUT we did not get a favorable schedule at all. We have to play Marshall, ODU, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, AND North Texas all on the road. We're going to have to win quite a few road games to compete with Old Dominion. Possible, but I haven't seen any evidence that we can do that consistently. I think we likely finish 3rd or 4th but we will get better as the season goes along. Nobody and I mean NOBODY will want to draw us in March. I might raise our spot if by some miracle we beat Wisconsin today.

North Texas. Not sure what to make of them. I'm looking through their schedule and there's just not a lot of meat there. The win at Indiana St was a solid win. But I don't think there is enough evidence either way. They could be really good and contend for the title or they may get shocked when they get into conference and are playing stronger teams and they get everybody's best shot (as tends to happen in conference play). There's something to be said for playing a tough non-conference schedule, but there's something to be said for building confidence and pride in your winning record. Playing too difficult a schedule can destroy your confidence. And they do have a pretty favorable schedule playing WKU, Marshall, La Tech, Southern Miss, and UAB at home.

Southern Miss. Close losses at Kansas St. and Wichita St. No real signature win to hang their hat on. I think they're solid. Tough road games @La Tech, @ODU, @North Texas, but they get a return game from La Tech, and they get Marshall and WKU at home. I think Louisiana Tech is probably a little better, but Tech did not get as favorable a conference schedule.

Louisiana Tech. Seems like they are consistently in or near that top tier. I am tempted to put them ahead of Southern Miss if for no other reason than they beat Wichita State whereas Southern Miss did not. I am also impressed that Tech won at Louisiana. Not that UL is all that great this year but that is one of those games where they are always going to get the Cajuns' best shot, especially on the road. And Tech didn't just beat them, they destroyed them. That is the kind of game you have to win to do well in conference. Tech has to play North Texas, Old Dominion, and USM on the road, all tough games.

Marshall. Has Marshall disappointed a little bit this season? Yeah. Have they missed Peneva a lot? You bet. BUT. I think every coach that has prepped their team for Marshall told their guys how Marshall beat Wichita State in the NCAA tournament and how they returned basically everybody. I think Marshall has played this season with a target on their back, something that they didn't have to do last year. And you look at their losses... most of them are forgivable losses. @Maryland. @Texas A&M. @Duquense (9-3). They lost by one point at home to Toledo... but Toledo is 9-1. Disappointing? Yes. Disaster? No. I think Marshall has played a tough schedule and will bounce back some in conference. As with WKU the schedule gods did not do them any favors. They have to play @Old Dominion, @WKU, @Louisiana Tech, @ Southern Miss, AND @North Texas. Because of that tough road through conference... and because of the loss of Peneva... I don't like their chances to win the regular season. But every single team that plays them will be playing Elmore roulette. Is tonight the night he goes off? Do you feel lucky? Well do ya, punk? Like WKU I think Marshall will be dangerous come March. In part because of their experience, in part because of Elmore's ability to take over a game, and in part because they have played a difficult schedule (conference and non-conference) that will prepare them for the CUSA tournament when everybody gets everybody's best shot.

Because of the schedule and the quality of those teams I feel very confident about Old Dominion and North Texas getting byes. I think there will be a dogfight for the other two slots between WKU, Marshall, Southern Miss, and Louisiana Tech. I will go with an order something like this:

1) ODU
2) North Texas
3) WKU
4) Marshall
5) Southern Miss
6) Louisiana Tech
7) UTSA
8) UAB
9) UTEP
10) FIU
11) FAU
12) MTSU
13) Charlotte
14) Rice

RE: CUSAbbs Midseason Basketball Poll
I think ODU and to a lesser extent La Tech gives us the best shot at two bids (we would need one dominant team in conference play out of ODU or La Tech lose in the tournament to do so). Take the current records away, we are probably slightly weaker this year than last year. I was hopeful at first, but reality is settling in.

My take

1) ODU
2) La Tech
3) WKU
4) Marshall
5) Southern Miss
6) North Texas
7) UAB
8) FAU
9) UTSA
10) UTEP
11) FIU
12) Rice
13) Middle Tennessee
14) Charlotte

What has NT done for you to prove they are the best in the conference? Just curious

NT is 12-1 with their best player from last year out for many of the games, and still working into game shape. NT also is very deep with currently 6 players averaging low double figure points.

ODU has a more impressive oc record, but I don't think they have the potential that NT has to get better in conference play.
