A former Ohio University men’s basketball player has been arrested on burglary charges stemming from an incident on Nov. 25 at an apartment at River Park Towers.
Dontonio B. Wingfield, Jr., 21, of North McKinley (River Park) has been charged with first-degree felony aggravated burglary. He is alleged to have entered an apartment at the apartment complex and threatened residents there with a deadly weapon.
No one was injured in the incident, according to the police report, which states that a known individual is alleged to have forced his way into a room at the apartment complex asking for the location of another man at gunpoint.
A warrant for Wingfield was issued Dec. 1, and officers attempting to locate him at his own apartment in River Park on Friday, Dec. 4 were delayed for several hours by three more individuals who are accused of refusing to answer the door.
Those three people were arrested and charged with misdemeanor obstructing official business. The Athens County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team assisted officers with Wingfield’s apprehension, according to the report, and Wingfield was arrested at that apartment without further incident.
Wingfield played for the OU Bobcats men’s basketball team in the 2013-14 season but did not see action due to injury. He is not listed as having been a part of the team in subsequent seasons.
Wingfield is being held on a $100,000 bond in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, with a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 14.
