Being a Freshman at VMI isn't known for being a lot of fun. Cannot imagine that would be an easy place to recruit.

A couple of observations...a frustrating night of missed opportunities and questionable tactics- many already noted.

This was one of the few nights where I was disappointed in Caver's play. It was obvious that the ODU game plan sans Godwin was to attack the basket mercilessly to leave the perimeter open (a la UVa). Caver got bumped repeatedly on drives that often result in FTs...last might body checks went uncalled all night. Rather than adjust, Caver kept driving, drawing contact and expected a call to happen, even though by early in the second half it was obvious that inside whistles were going to be scarce (note U Va got 26 FT attempts). Heck, given another 8-10 FTs he might have hit a couple. He glared at the refs for no-calls time and again down the stretch.

Someone other than Stith/Caver has to be willing to take some shots (and hit if ODU is to succeed). Discounting the final heave, X took one shot in 14 mins in the second half. Kithcart played 9 mins and even hit a three, never to shoot again.


Dickens has got to learn to follow his man out to the perimeter against these stretch-forwards. He doesn't, so we have to go small. Carver played as well as he's capable, but ODU needs more and better inside (Robinson will never be able to play stretch and will be limited in action in many CUSA games).


The end game stratagem is where JJ let his players down. Yes, JJ believes in ODU's MTM prowess, but 3 fouls in your pocket on the last possession? Marshall was going to wait until the final 10 secs and let Elmore dictate the final play. That's 3 fouls to give over the last 10 secs...I just don't get it.

Side note. Those who claim Caver is better than Elmore are off their rocker. He isn't even in the same galaxy. Game on the line, Elmore took over and won the game, Caver tried to take over (stupidly when there was no need for him to) and blew the game.

He doesn’t understand that usage and efficiency are only part of the story and grittyness and being able to rise to the occasion in the clutch also matter.

Odu consistently shrinks when the occasion calls for big plays. Elmore rises which is why he’s been to the ncaa tourney and won a game and no one on our team has even been to the NIT.

Agree- I was shocked at the no foul...

6 years is a large enough sample size, he’s not a good enough recruiter to continually make boneheaded mistakes like this.

You have to give you team the best chance to win every game and he simply does not.

I used to give Blaine sh.t about constantly taking hot shooters out of the game when they were on a roll, but at least he switched defenses constantly and his teams didn’t choke. He also but them in a position to win consistently when he was sober.

Jones doesn’t have an excuse, he just doesn’t pay attention or doesn’t know what to do in certain situations.

It’s no longer a coincidence that he and I have the same number of ncaa tourney victories this millennium.

That's true... even in the losses against Michigan State, Butler 2nd, and Baylor we stepped up and made plays to give us a chance to win, but the other team was a little better. Only real choke job was the first Butler loss.

I do have to give JJ credit for Syracuse and the ex-CAA sweep so I'll wait and see what happens tomorrow before I judge this team as same old, same old.

Syracuse and vcu good wins but not great.

W&m and Richmond suck.

This loss is important because odds are, western Kentucky is going to beat us tomorrow night too.

They are a much better team and a much worse matchup. Their freshmen big will absolutely destroy us.

Starting 0-2 in conference with both games at home in year 6 and we lose Our center and our backcourt next year should be the final straw for both Jones AND Wood for bringing him back.

The injury to Marquis was a huge hit to the chemistry of the team that was established over our eight game win streak. Let us not forget and continue to enjoy the ecstasy of the wins over vcu and Cuse. I truly believe we would have won the game last night if Marquis had been able to play. Foh to anyone else who feels otherwise.

Did anyone elsenotice Elmore and X having tea and crumpets from time to time? Whenever someone was shooting fouls, Elmore would go to the far end of the court, along with X. Threy appeared to be talking and laughing. Wonder if Elmore got in his head. X has to shoot more. He passes up a ton of outside shots and the more he passes up those shots, the more they will be available.

I talked to Elmore pre-game...he left VMI for a sick relative and wanted to play closer to home...he kept saying to X and Caver how much fun this game was, I hear a lot of trash talking normally, Elmore wasn't that guy Thursday night.

Ya they were definitely enjoying it and I heard them joking around a couple times. Only trash talk I think I heard is when Carver hit his first 2 free throws it sounded like Elmore laughed and said "and he's a 20% ft shooter?!" I wonder if that was because everyone for a while there was making everything and that was the theme of the jokes.
