Yeah, I’m a VT fan and I think this is petty.

Very petty. ECU was justified in not traveling to VT during the hurricane.

Like that VT plays road games at ODU, Marshall, MTSU, and Liberty. Wish they’d finish this series. Leaving the series dormant thereafter would be more than justified considering the number of G5 road games VT has played. They might actually be better than any P5 playing HvH’s outside the power structure.

So that answers my question that I posed to a VaTech board... b/t their ECU and Old Do commitments, it seemed the earliest they could honor this new-born 2/1 with Marshall would be 2031. I was assured it would probably be a replacement for some of the current ECU contract.

RE: Virginia Tech cancels remainder of ECU football series
From the point of view of VT, ECU canceled their game in Blacksburg, then when the Hokies were needing a 12th game, ECU signed up to play NC State instead - thus forcing VT to shell out $300K and sign a H+H with Marshall.

There's plenty of blame to go around (I don't think for one second that VT is an innocent victim - but neither is ECU). It's a real shame the folks in charge allowed things to get this bad.

Isn't it the case that the game couldn't be re-scheduled at the time? VT still had a chance to be in the ccg?

at the time ECU signed up to play NC State (which was on 10/2/18), it was still possible that VT might be in the ACC CG, yes. OTOH, it was also possible that NC State might be in the ACC CG as of that date (they were still undefeated!), but that didn't stop ECU from signing with the Wolfpack...

RE: Virginia Tech cancels remainder of ECU football series
I love this.

ECU were totally classless in blind-siding VT by canceling on social media while VT were working out arrangements for rooms, offices, practice facilities, and flights.

Them rescheduling NC State and, again, letting VT know on social media and the shenanigans with them cashing the appearance fee are just more of the same from them.

The beauty in only cancelling the away games is that any cancellation fees we might owe are going to have to be paid by them as well when they inevitably cancel our home games (which they're well practiced on).

Hopefully Babcock holds off on sending that check for the cancellations - better to get ECU to just agree to waive them both ways. Something tells me they'll cash VT's check and "forget" to write one of their own... seriously though, maybe the new AD at ECU fixing a bunch of these issues, but 2018 was definitely NOT their best year!

Don't you think this is less about ducking but more about removing a team that no longer fits their schedule aspirations?

ECU's historical role as a good H-H for Virginia and NC schools is becoming obsolete.

That's a good point: Before joining the AAC, ECU was usually a pretty good team, with a good fan base that could be counted on to travel to local games in Virginia and the Carolinas.

But now, because ECU has slumped so bad, playing ECU is an SOS albatross. You definitely sink your SOS by playing ECU, and also the game is no longer interesting for your fan base.

ECU's Non-Conference Home Schedule:

2019
-Gardner Webb

2020
-Marshall
-Norfolk St.

2021
-South Carolina

2022
-NC State
-Campbell

2023
-Marshall

2024
-App State
-BYU

2025
-Charlotte

2026
-App State
-West Virginia

2027
-Wake Forest

2028
-NC State
-Boise St.
-Georgia St.

This is still better home scheduling than most G5 teams.

If you look at what they have out to 2028, the next 10 years ECU has 5 home games against P5 opponents.

South Carolina
NC State (x2)
West Virginia
Wake Forest

How does Old Dominion stack up to this?

Wake Forest
Virginia
Virginia Tech (x5)

They have the long term series now with VT and not ECU. How is Liberty doing in future P5 scheduling?

Syracuse
Virginia Tech (x2)
Wake Forest
Duke
Virginia (x2)
North Carolina

Its clear that Liberty and ODU having FBS teams are a factor for ECU's scheduling. Teams that are not only in the region but have strong home crowd atmospheres to offer up opponents, albeit not as large of a stadium as ECU.

I think this is a strong part of it, and the ECU cancellation kinda gave them an excuse.

Now that they've got games at ODU, they don't really need to come to Greenville.

I think you're right. Va Tech had been moving away from ECU by signing the two ODU and Liberty series. This whole situation just allowed them to go ahead and end it sooner

RE: Virginia Tech cancels remainder of ECU football series
From insiders at ECU, it's been reported that VT made an announcement to cancel the game before VT was able to make an announcement - violating protocol. VT find out via social media. Then ECU sent their equipment to Florida and VT again found out via social media. Finally VT found out about ECU's agreement to play at NC State on December 1 via sources not tied to ECU. The ODU games would be a factor, but this last bit of handling would be impossible to take once the VT rank and file found out.

Read this:

https://eastcarolina.sportswar.com/mid/1...ecubanter/

NC State is politically and ideologically beholden to help ECU. We have done that before to our own detriment because that is what the UNC Board of Governors and NC General Assembly expect. Some of our best boosters are so deeply tied to ECU as well that they can not make decisions fully in NC State's favor if they hurt ECU. Long term it is in NC State's, Duke's, and UNC's interest to keep VT out of Eastern North Carolina rather than enabling them to have two games in the State of NC nearly every year (Duke, UNC, then WF and NC State one of six years and ECU every other year). All this said, why ECU handled the matter like this seems to be part of the fruit of losing Terry Holland at AD.

Terry Holland is no saint either... cancelled a @ Cuse game on about 8 months notice. The last of a 9 game contract. We contracted a 5 for 4 back in the late 80s when ECU was playing in a glorified HS stadium. Gave them good exposure and then they cancelled the last game to make more sheckels with VT I believe.

Of course Cuse pulled a fast one on Wyoming which I hated too by buying out the return game.
