Really great to see Anderson have such success at the next level. He has a Rice degree and a Sugar Bowl victory under his belt. Not bad!

I was thinking exactly the same thing.
2 questions come to mind...
Did the previous Rice coaching staff (Bailiff, et al) have any part in helping Anderson get the position at Texas? Especially considering the Bailiff-Mensa connection.
And
What are Anderson's chances in the upcoming NFL draft? Any early word on his ability to be taken in the first 3 or 4 rounds?

Re: the first one, even if Bailiff (or anyone else on the former Rice staff) did put in a good word, Anderson definitely didn't need it to get looks. He was probably the best offensive line grad transfer this time last year and had his pick of UT, Auburn, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Anderson’s issue is that he is not particularly strong (relatively speaking).

He is pretty good in pass protection but leaves a lot to be desired in run blocking. If you watch Texas film, they run a lot more off the right tackle than the left tackle.

He is pretty good in pass protection but leaves a lot to be desired in run blocking. If you watch Texas film, they run a lot more off the right tackle than the left tackle.

Assessments from that Walter Football site:

Quote:Projected Round (2019): 4-6.

8/28/18: According to NFL teams' preseason data provided by team sources, Anderson checks in at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds. He is said to run the 40 at 5.10 seconds.

Anderson is a graduate transfer to Texas from Rice and is a plug-and-play starter for the Longhorns. Team sources have Anderson with a preseason projection of being a prospect for the first four rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has good athleticism and is steady pass protector at tackle. Anderson could use more strength for run blocking in the NFL.

12/9/18: Sources say they have not been impressed with Anderson this season.

RE: Bowl Season thread
Bowl records are becoming more and more meaningless when so many top NFL prospects skip the games. I suspect without looking it up in advance that Georgia had some players not play in the Sugar Bowl.

A Sugar Bowl anecdote - my brother brought his twins yesterday to Tulane for a campus visit as a possible college destination (where he ran into another Rice fan doing the same with his daughter by the way), and he told me that they had a lot of people on their visit. He was trying to figure out why it was so many kids but then he noticed that almost all of them were from Texas and Georgia (families in town for the Sugar Bowl who probably had younger siblings of current students so they were checking out a local college). I wonder if Rice's campus visits are larger when say the Texas Bowl is being played? That's something I've never thought about as a benefit to a local school during bowl season until now.

He also mentioned to me how the bulk of the campus visit was Tulane officials pumping up their massive, new 4-story campus rec building (which he said was gorgeous but at the same time, he said they barely mentioned anything about academics on the campus tour).

Unfortunately, rec buildings and the like are what it has become. I suppose no prospective student gets as far as a visit without being fully aware of the academics.

Your post does bring up one interesting angle. Does Rice, and if not should Rice, target areas from which football teams are coming to town for big games--the Texas Bowl or one of the Reliant specials--to invite potential students from the states involved to come for a visit while in town? I don't know that Baylor versus Vandy was great opportunity for this (because Baylor alums are mostly Texans and Vandy alums probably already favor another elite academic school), but if instead it had been Tennessee versus Kansas or Kansas State, would it make sense to send a letter to all National Merit finalists (or some similar criterion) in those states inviting them for a visit?

That's what I remember from my own Tulane visit back in 2007. It was 95% Lifestyle, 5% Katrina after-effects, and 0% Academics

A friend of mine has a granddaughter who has been offered an athletic scholarship to Auburn. On the official visit, they (a large group, including parents) were taken on a campus tour by the "official" tour guide. When asked where the Library was, the guide didn't know.

ACC 6-5, plus #1 team
SEC 6-6

CUSA wins best bowl record of any conference, FWIW which is not much.

Note that all P5s ended up within 1 game of .500.

Makes sense, since most P5s play other P5s. Here were (I think) the only 'crossover' bowls:

1) LSU def UCF
2) Virginia Tech lost to Cincinnati
3) Duke def Temple
4) Wake Forest def Memphis
5) Arizona State lost to Fresno State
...
6) Boston College / Boise State not played
