Freshman Football
I was wondering with the new red shirt ruling of not loosing your red shirt if you play in a maximum of four games that a few freshman games would be beneficial or allowed to give those players who will not play the four game maximum? Maybe at least allow the players to scrimmage against another team?

Yikes sorry for my mistake. Anyway, would it be possible for the freshman or potential red shirt players scrimmage or play some games against other red shirt players from other universitiies to gain experience ?

It'd take an NCAA rule change to allow such a game because there's a set limit of 12 regular season games allowed (excluding Hawaii and conference championship +1 each). Nobody is going to make a gentleman's agreement (or a binding one) on a traditional non-conference game for this purpose. We're also brushing up against the limit of how much work the coaches can feasibly do in a week since even the biggest programs with dozens of consultants still have the same maximum number of player-facing roles mandated by the NCAA as every other school. It wouldn't be easy logistically to tack onto an existing game (played Friday night or early Saturday, for example) because most players who will be redshirted or otherwise not play for the season don't travel. You could maybe arrange a spring-game-esque scrimmage with local teams (e.g. Rice freshmen vs Prairie View freshmen), but that's not going to get much support from the Midwest and Mountain West teams that don't have a lot of conveniently local opponents.

With current scholarship limitations, you really don’t have the numbers to do it. Freshmen became eligible for varsity football, and freshmen games were dropped, about the time scholarship limits were reduced.
