What if...
you could chose any coach from past or present to coach this years team. Who would have won most games? Do you think having Doeren would have made NIU win the bowl game and maybe a couple of others?

Yes. Or at least they would have been competitive.

RE: What if...
The coaching was a problem but the lack of a legit college QB was a bigger problem. That is also on the coaches though as we had a good QB that was runoff.

And as far as we know, one of the backup QBs could be better and we'll never know. I mean, in games. Not practices where the QB doesn't get hit and doesn't have to run for 1st downs.

WR, TE were weak. Our Oline was good. Our runningbacks were ok. Not many big plays by them.

The lack of big plays was a huge issue. A play maker really needs to emerge next season.

+1. I’m so tired of this horizontal passing attack. I get it....it’s suppose to be like jab-jab-jab-jab to set up a big overhand right. But wenever throw the big punch. Just leave it there cocked.

Was the Oline good? I think it was rumored to be good but struggled throughout the season.

Oline was good to very good. In our offense a slow QB and no game breaking RB, they look averageish...Childers left many big runs on the table.

Line was a huge disappointment. Too many sacks allowed (Childers owned more than his share of them too) and the running game was never consistent.

Childers could get tackled by a sloth in the open field. We need somebody that when they get a wide open field they can occasionally make someone miss or at least get a few yards after contact.

RE: What if...
Tough call...not sure any given coach could have gotten much different results. Most of this chain harks for a playmaker or two. Problem (and not really a problem) is that our playmaker this year was on defense and it is growingly difficult to win college football games 7-6 or 17-13 any more. To look at any team you need to go back 3,4,5 years and see what and who was recruited. Are we not recruiting playmakers or are we not turning recruits into playmakers? Sutton Smith was not recruited to be a first team all American defensive end. Jordan Lynch was not recruited to almost win the Heisman. I don't think Tommy Lee Lewis was recruited to be an NFL wideout. Things are very cyclical in football with the constant roster turnover.

It was magical the Orange Bowl year as I knew we had a great, great defense and then all of a sudden Jordan emerges as a super star and we have high powered offense to go with the defense. This year the cycle was defense and the offense didn't come close to catch ing up.

Being objective (and I'm not a Carey guy), I don't think we could have expected anything different than the outcome this year. We simply play in the MAC and there are enough very bad programs that we are going to contend and continue to be at the top of the heap until another program can prove it can stabilize for a 5-8 stretch and that's not going to happen soon.

We need playmakers on offense. This year we really had none. Jones and Nettles were supposed to be home run hitters but they did nothing. Wesley was up and down. Dropped some, fumbled some and made some decent plays. Tight ends hurt. QB is slowest QB in years. More of the same next year unless someone steps up.

NIU has a passing attack? 03-wink

3 games they passed for 160+. More like a retreat than an attack. 05-stirthepot

I would like to see Jerry Pettibone come back and get the team running the wishbone again. 03-cloud9
