ESPN :Name the 4 teams that have won 2 outright conference titles the past 5 years
A few days ago ESPN showed a graphic of 4 teams that met this criteria, can you name them without looking it up? The announcers said this is the criteria that teams should be judged by, performance vs their peer institutions.

(Hint: Some fans of one of these 4 teams say it is not good enough to be in this select group....)

JJJ, unless I'm not understanding the graphic ESPN showed, there's got to be more than four. Right off the top I can think of Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Washington, not to mention our own Huskies... Still, point well taken!

No. Their "peer" institutions consist of more than their own conference.

Yeah HW58, it was right after NIU won the MAC as i now recall...
You are correct.

At that point in time the graphic showed only NIU, Alabama, Clemson, and Oklahoma logos on the screen.....

Since then you can add in Washington and Ohio State...

Still pretty good company........

No one is saying/arguing Carey cannot compete in the MAC. Hell if he had a different OC and/or qb he could have dominated the MAC this year.

It makes no more sense than bragging about the 49ers winning their division at 9-7 and then getting trounced by the first team they play in the playoffs.

I think its important to remember though, the offense is Carey's. The OC is not running rogue. The conservative paralyzing offense is a function of Carey, not the OC

Comparing NIU's performance to any NFL team is not accurate. NFL teams have the same salary cap and access (NFL draft) to the same players.

NIU does not have the financial resources for coaches or the ability to recruit to 5 star recruits that P5 conferences have....

So if RC was 4-1 in bowls would that be good enough? 3-2?

What the hell are you talking about? The implication is that just by virtue of winning the MAC that NIU must be good. I'm sorry but obviously that is not the case.

Ok, let us agree to disagree then. Conference results do matter to some fans and coaches. Joe Novak always said the goal was to "Win the MAC", which he ironically said again before NIU was to play Alabama, with the assumption that NIU did not have a chance as a 14 pt underdog....

I will take a MAC title and a bowl blowout any season as opposed to say a 5-7, 6-6 season where NIU does not win the MAC , but does win a bowl game.

Winning the Mac means you are doing better than everyone on your level of competition. You outperformed the 11 other programs with the most similar resources and intangibles you have. That's all that can be reasonably expected. The MAC is the worst or second to worst worst conference in the country. Exactly who's butt are the Huskies suppose to kick?

WMU just got curb stomped by BYU. Toledo lost as well. Maybe the MAC is the worst conference this year.

The odds of NIU going 5-7 or 6-6 and get invited, let alone winning a bowl game, are pretty slim. Is it really too much to ask to win the MAC and then manage just one win in every three or four bowl appearances? Seriously, are you and the fans who place so much value on conference results not the least bit upset over six consecutive bowl game defeats?

The offense we run sucks. The qb we have running it sucks even more. It does just enough to do well in the Mac, but mostly gets us destroyed out of conference vs a good team. Until we get a real offense and a real QB I don't expect too much outside of Mac level wins

Nice try jjj. Unfortunately there’s a group of so called “fans” on the Pound whose goal is to derail any positive thread with the same negative crap and convince everyone else on the Pound to despise STF, Coach Carey, Childers, Huskie Stadium, everything and anything about NIU football as much as they do. I’m just not interested in being that sort of “fan.” Takes every bit of enjoyment out of it for me.

I'm not interested in being the kind of fan that is satisfied with seeing NIU decline into the sewer. I was a student in the late 90s , I can't live through that again.

With how bad the offense is, you can't even evaluate talent of individual players because it is designed for the very purpose of players not being allowed to make plays and make mistakes

They would be vs average sun belt and CUSA teams. I think the mac was down so much this year that we won it with an average Mac team. Catch one of those CUSA or sunbelt teams who are having a great year and we don’t match up. Carey’s post season issues aside, we just aren’t that great this year. We are ok.

I’ll give Carey this...he knows when to suck and when to be just good enough. He basically stole his two MACCs. Or should I seized the opportunity. 2014 was won because BG lost tmatt Johnson. Losing in 2015 gets to be blamed on our qb injury situation when I don’t believe we beat Matt Johnson anyway. 2016, 2017 had juggernaut teams in WMU and Toledo when we were at our lowest and couldn’t beat them anyway. 2018 we are just getting back on our feet and the mac is so bad we won it with a so so team.

I just cannot.overstate how bad this situation is going to be when the defense is not playing at a high level. I think we saw in the bowl game a vision of the future with NIU. Not running an offense is going to come back to haunt NIU

Matt Johnson was injured in the first game of the season. BG played all year without him and still won the Mac East. It's not like he was injured just before the Mac Championship game.
