There’s Something Seriously Building for NIU Football
For anyone that follows the players/recruits on Twitter it’s starting to become evident that something really positive is going on regarding recruiting and a “family like” atmosphere in the locker room. There’s a lot of hype out there that NIU just stole some playmakers In this years class. A lot of these guys played together for Midwest Boom football which is a developmental 7 on 7 for the areas best athletes. A few decided to team up at NIU. Many of the current players are helping with recruiting and Carey is hitting Illinois hard for recruiting. I’m excited to see this pipeline continue. There’s no question based off all the tweets/videos that these kids absolutely love it at NIU. I think some of our negative fans are really underestimating what Carey is starting to build here.

Hard to share that optimism based on what's going on, on the field. Huskies did not seem all that interested in playing on Tuesday and the result showed it. It's really hard to argue the arrow is pointing up right now. Something was just so off to me watching that bowl game. It was not something I even really looked forward to that day which is extremely rare for me. I dont know why but there is just a disconnect right now. I think the apathy of the head coach is rubbing off on the program big time now. The games are not real entertaining to watch.

I've been hearing about the family like atmosphere for many years, that isn't new. If this time it results in getting particularly good recruits, then that will be new.

Did we not just win the MAC a few weeks ago? Your argument makes no sense... Yes, the bowl game sucked, but in reality, only 3 or 4 plays made that entire game (a few bombs (one of which was a on a freshman, one was on a guy who has barely played at NIU outside of this year and another one where our guy fell down) and finally when our young RB fumbled on the goal line going in for a score). Those were a couple individual plays that changed the game, I dont understand the logic that our play this year was hard to be optimistic about. We had arguably the best defense in NIU history and won the MAC Championship despite poor QB play. If anything, that gives me quite a bit of optimism going forward. I also agree that we are bringing in quite a bit of talent and have these last few years. If we get the QB position and OC figured out, the sky is the limit, but again the fact that we are STILL winning the MAC in spite of all of that is pretty damn impressive.

I hope you guys dont take this the wrong way but I think NIU is a pretty average football team under Carey. That being said, UT right now, is below average. I am not really thrilled with either team. The bowl losses have been terrible as well. I dont think either coach deserves any extensions at the moment.

At least Toledo has won a Boca Bowl.

Then the rest of the MAC below average, which I guess I wouldn't argue. As long as Rod keeps beating below average MAC teams he isn't going anywhere. The only way we lose him is if somehow he gets picked up by a bigger school. However, I think he likes this gig, I'm not sure he'd want to even entertain a bigger school even if he was offered the chance

RE: There’s Something Seriously Building for NIU Football
To hear that NIU has an inside track to a successful 7-on-7 program and that the kids have a desire to come to NIU is certainly wonderful to hear. Hopefully, this relationship will lead to an NFL QB. I would definitely like to see this successful recruiting campaign translate to more wins -- and especially bowl wins -- very soon.

No, you're right. Carey has led this program to mediocrity. The offense has taken a huge nose-dive. This past season showed that the difference between NIU and most of the MAC is minimal now. We barely beat the worst team in the conference (CMU) and struggled to win most of the rest of the MAC games (except for Toledo).

Yea I can't disagree with that right now. Hate to say it after a MACC win. But we wouldn't beat the typical Toledo team with a good QB. Or CMU with Lefevour or WMU with Terrell or Ball State with Nate Davis or Miami with Roethlisberher. Because we don't have a real QB and our coach refuses to admit that. Among other things. The bar is just lower right now but hopefully our new recruits will get us back to where we were.

Sounds like Maddawgz’s assessment is like he watched the 2015 Poinsettia bowl instead. If Nettles doesn’t have the ball popped by yet another UAB player leading out the offense scores 20 points. And I’m not sure Nettles want in for the TD before the hit. If you would’ve told me before the game that the offense scores 20 points, I like our chances in that game. Would have been nice to have Embry in there, not sure Ubasi is able to make all those plays if Embry was on the field. Also that near punt block and BS running into the kicker allowed UAB to take a 2 TD lead when we could have tied it up was a huge momentum swing.

And back to what really was a somewhat dirty tackle leading with the helmet on Nettles. Had the hit been a few inches higher would have been another targeting penalty. Aside from that, the player tackling like that is lucky he wasn’t carted off the field like his teammate who did the same thing on Robinson in the first quarter.

We won the MACC. We have been to 10 bowl games in 11 years. You must be miserable to live with. Yes, I always want better but we have had a damn good football program for well over a decade. Mr. Grinch lighten up.

I think we may need to temper our expecations of what this program is (and can be). We should be a year after year MACC contender, win our assigned bowl game, pick off the occassional P5 team, and develop/graduate exceptional human beings. Apart from the bowl game record, we are doing pretty well. We are not a P5 school/program and to hold ourselves to a P5 standard is unreasonable. We are probably closer to and FCS program than a P5 one. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of factors that are out of our control (TV contracts, state of Illinois budget, etc.)

Year after year of being a macc contender is a tremendous accomplishment. Why in the world some people think NIU should run roughshod over the conference is ludicrous. I understand wanting to. That’s called being a fan. But expecting to is called being a homer.

Don't disagree, but neither NIU or Toledo have taken the steps back like Kent or BG.
Both NIU and Toledo have been consistently good programs always in contention for the MACC.

NIU was an average, at best, team this year but pulled out games when it had too. Obviously our QB situation is the big issue. Childers has been mostly mediocre with the occasional flash of brilliance.

As someone who remembers NIU football in the 90's, I'm still optimistic on the team, except for bowls, of course.

RE: There’s Something Seriously Building for NIU Football
MAC football, at least for NIU and a great majority of fans, has become a TV only event.

I have heard the pros but when you come down to it is pretty bad when you can't spend a Saturday beyond 1st weekend in October watching NIU play in person, home or away.

NIU is the alpha dog and getting screwed having to play 5 games conf. games on weekdays while others play 1-2. Our ability to draw an audience and interest lies on tv nationally to MAC and ESPN. We are the best of a lackluster group.

Who would have thought NIU would go from no fans and losing (albeit more at times than currently when winning), to a lot of fans and winning, to no fans and winning.

It's the way it is and is not changing any time soon. All the OOC scheduling in the world I am afraid won't work. Might as well go back to easy OOC, try to win 10-11 games and draw when ranked.

It is pathetic what has happened to the fan base. And if you don't live remotely close to DeKalb you understand it more.

I 100% agree with this. Pump the breaks on the national level and enjoy winning the MAC.

Great post.
