MD, something is "just so off" to you when you are watching any Huskies football game. I completely disagree with the statement in bold. I didn't see disinterest at all. Bad play, yes, but disinterest, no. "Disinterest" is just a cop-out that's way overused by fans and analysts whenever a team--any team--loses a big game. Two guys going pro were out there busting their butts (Sutton and Max) after some on this Board suggested at least Sutton wouldn't play if he declared. Had freshmen DBs in the game due to injuries--you think they weren't trying to make a good impression? I swear you think the team gets on the bus after a game like that all happy and relieved they don't have to be in Florida or playing football any more--just get me back to DeKalb and my studies! Are you kidding? Those kids were all in. And the coaches and STF, I'm pretty sure they weren't high-fiving in the tunnel afterward thrilled with another bowl loss on national TV--mission accomplished. I mean, they're all about losing and taking down the program, right? Get a grip. Geez.

I 100% agree with this. Pump the breaks on the national level and enjoy winning the MAC.

Great post.

That is what is a little painful, to see the evolution under this coach from a team playing at power conference level to a program closer to FCS level. There seems to be an acceptance of that lower standard. When you get contract extended every other week I guess that lowers motivation for excellence

I don't think it was asking too much that NIU fans expect for the Huskies to be competitive and beat UAB. The defensive coaches made a huge mistake in leaving their best receiver 1 on 1 against their freshmen CBs. What the heck were they thinking? To have him beat you three times in a game shows that the coaches were absolutely disengaged. (Which is too bad because the defensive coaches have been amazing ALL year). Adjustments should have been made after the first big score. I think the disengagement by the coaches most definitely carried over to the players. And of course Childers could not make the clutch throws to two open receivers that would've led to TDs. This whole "bowl game is a reward'' philosophy has crippled the team. They need a new approach. Whatever Ohio and Marshall have going on they need to copy. Instead of heading into the offseason riding high with a conference title and a bowl victory we are left with a bunch of question marks. UAB is not a team that should have destroyed us. I'm pretty confident a lot of MAC teams (Buffalo, Toldeo, Ohio, Miami-Ohio, EMU, CMU) would have gone toe to toe with them just as we should have. We definitely lacked juice in the bowl game, very similar to the Miami-Ohio/WMU games. It's very frustrating.

This is the biggest misnomer of the program. NIU was never playing at a P5 level. The 2010 team lost to two .500 p5s and beat a 2 win P5. 2011 team, one of the best, lost to 2 win Kansas and got destroyed by Wisconsin. 2012 team lost to 4 win Iowa and lost by 21 to FSU. They beat 1 win Kansas and 2 win army. For the last 8 years NIU has feasted on the MAC and 2 win P5 teams. The only thing that has changed is we no longer play 2 win P5s.

The haters are always talking about the demise of the program and they don’t even understand where the program was at.

Yep, sometimes I wonder if people actually go back and look at the 'big games/names' that Doeren played and the results, or Kill...or Joe...

How dare you say anything positive! How dare you!

The last few we pulled in late for this class seemed to be something, and much more local now, maybe we've given up on Florida, and maybe that's ok? we'll see.

We won the MACC. We have been to 10 bowl games in 11 years. You must be miserable to live with. Yes, I always want better but we have had a damn good football program for well over a decade. Mr. Grinch lighten up.

That means we've been at least .500 for 10 out of 11 years. Big deal. And I'm pretty sure we ended up below .500 after losing the bowl game.

Did we not just win the MAC a few weeks ago? Your argument makes no sense... Yes, the bowl game sucked, but in reality, only 3 or 4 plays made that entire game (a few bombs (one of which was a on a freshman, one was on a guy who has barely played at NIU outside of this year and another one where our guy fell down) and finally when our young RB fumbled on the goal line going in for a score). Those were a couple individual plays that changed the game, I dont understand the logic that our play this year was hard to be optimistic about. We had arguably the best defense in NIU history and won the MAC Championship despite poor QB play. If anything, that gives me quite a bit of optimism going forward. I also agree that we are bringing in quite a bit of talent and have these last few years. If we get the QB position and OC figured out, the sky is the limit, but again the fact that we are STILL winning the MAC in spite of all of that is pretty damn impressive.

Sounds like Maddawgz’s assessment is like he watched the 2015 Poinsettia bowl instead. If Nettles doesn’t have the ball popped by yet another UAB player leading out the offense scores 20 points. And I’m not sure Nettles want in for the TD before the hit. If you would’ve told me before the game that the offense scores 20 points, I like our chances in that game. Would have been nice to have Embry in there, not sure Ubasi is able to make all those plays if Embry was on the field. Also that near punt block and BS running into the kicker allowed UAB to take a 2 TD lead when we could have tied it up was a huge momentum swing.

And back to what really was a somewhat dirty tackle leading with the helmet on Nettles. Had the hit been a few inches higher would have been another targeting penalty. Aside from that, the player tackling like that is lucky he wasn’t carted off the field like his teammate who did the same thing on Robinson in the first quarter.

You do realize that was probably coaching decision to go for punt block on that play instead of just taking possession. It is the risk you take with going for punt blocks, not sure why you thought that was BS?

NIU looked like it did not even belong in the same subdivision as a Sunbelt team, let that sink in

It's not the players fault what is happening, that blame goes to Carey and Frazier

If you go by the Sagarin ratings year by year, we aren't close to where we were.

You can argue we are unlikely to get another good QB but you cannot argue that the team is as good as the 2010 to 2013 years.

Also the Sagarin ratings for the whole conference were comparable if not better then than they are now.

Also their close loss at the end of the 4th quarter against Iowa was Lynch's first start.

Happy players is nice. Players that graduate is awesome, as is winning the MAC.

Losing a game to P5 acceptable. Losing a bowl game, couple in a row, sure.

But 6 in a row? Competitive in one? One vs. a P5?

Yeah, it may be seen as unreasonable to win every bowl. But not unreasonable to accomplish all the things mentioned 1st and be competitive in these games. I believe NIU was 25-23 in their last 48 at one point in the season while still having won like 60/68 MAC games.

I agree, we are playing much better P5 teams, but you can't ignore the fact that there has been a decline in the program. We used to demolish MAC teams and now we struggle to beat one-win CMU and the rest of the MAC teams we play. Our top 15 offense is now a bottom 10 offense. Now we get blown out every bowl game we play, against fellow G5 programs no less.

+1. These games should at-least be competitive. Some of these game look/are embarrassing. Don't understand how they compete well against a Utah team that was ranked majority of the season an in the PAC12 championship and they come out like they did against UAB.

Since when is it acceptable to not only lose but be completely uncompetitive in every bowl game?

The punter flopped. It was a bad call by the officials. That's what was being eluded to.

We should be a year after year MACC contender, win our assigned bowl game, pick off the occassional P5 team, and develop/graduate exceptional human beings. Apart from the bowl game record, we are doing pretty well. We are not a P5 school/program and to hold ourselves to a P5 standard is unreasonable. We are probably closer to and FCS program than a P5 one. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of factors that are out of our control (TV contracts, state of Illinois budget, etc.)

Retweet.

They lost by 21 to FSU with Carey coaching. Not a bad score but also not an example of how good the team was before Carey.

That's a fair assessment. But, there was a clear disparity between the talent and athleticism of both teams. Carey has certainly minimized that differential on the offensive and defensive line.
