That's a fair assessment. But, there was a clear disparity between the talent and athleticism of both teams. Carey has certainly minimized that differential on the offensive and defensive line.

The point is that there should not be any difference in the talent, or certainly not that much. Even if you argue that UAB had a recruiting advantage based on their particular situation, they barely beat MTSU in their previous game.

The Huskies been to the MAC Championship game 8 times. 6 of them were consecutive. How many teams can say that? They remind me of a certain NFL team who won four consecutive conference championships.

There was a significant differential in one category and it was at defensive back. NIU did not have depth there at the start of the year and they got banged up as the season went on. If Embry plays, it's a different game.

I think you could argue that if this didn't happen EVERY year. At a certain point it's no longer just bad luck

That sunk in last year when the best team Toledo has ever fielded got shut out 34-0 to app. state. Guess the Sun belt is just better....Toledo had one of their best ever qbs and couldn’t score against the mighty sunbelt.

No. Bad luck accounts for a score or two. Not multiple bad games. It’s become a 500 on gorilla and they are pressing. They also get out coached. It feels like NIU doesn’t prepare for their specific opponent. Like they can just run their base defenses and plays and that’s good enough.

They’ve been overmatched a couple times due to bad match ups, but there is something philosophically wrong with their approach. And they have had crap at work for the last 3.

We are probably closer to and FCS program than a P5 one. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of factors that are out of our control (TV contracts, state of Illinois budget, etc.)
I 100% agree with this. Pump the breaks on the national level and enjoy winning the MAC.

Great post.

That is what is a little painful, to see the evolution under this coach from a team playing at power conference level to a program closer to FCS level. There seems to be an acceptance of that lower standard. When you get contract extended every other week I guess that lowers motivation for excellence

This is the biggest misnomer of the program. NIU was never playing at a P5 level. The 2010 team lost to two .500 p5s and beat a 2 win P5. 2011 team, one of the best, lost to 2 win Kansas and got destroyed by Wisconsin. 2012 team lost to 4 win Iowa and lost by 21 to FSU. They beat 1 win Kansas and 2 win army. For the last 8 years NIU has feasted on the MAC and 2 win P5 teams. The only thing that has changed is we no longer play 2 win P5s.

The haters are always talking about the demise of the program and they don’t even understand where the program was at.

+1000 if NIU scheduled nothing but cupcakes this year and threw in a bad power 5 team like Rutgers or Kansas they would be an 11 win team and everyone would say it’s a phenomenal year and they are ready to make a power 5 jump.

I've seen it with the last two classes in particular. I think you are correct.

We won the MACC. We have been to 10 bowl games in 11 years. You must be miserable to live with. Yes, I always want better but we have had a damn good football program for well over a decade. Mr. Grinch lighten up.

Apparently MD doesn’t pay any attention to the sidelines. Players were into the game and showed tons of emotion. Carey did as well. I understand you don’t like the guy but provide facts not your usual bs.

If recruits can turn this around, great. They will need to.

The facts have been provided. They get blown out year after year. That is on the coaching staff.

I probably should not have said that, just seemed like the game meant a heck of a lot more to UAB than NIU. This is nothing new though, Carey is not exactly the best preparer for these games. If anyone at this point doubts Carey does not know how to prepare this team for a bowl game, they are flat out not being honest or are related to Carey. We have a 7 year history of Carey disasters in these games. That is a large enough sample size to at least critique Carey.

Apparently our fans are not capable of giving any criticism to Carey, it really is unbelievable. The man makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, at some point with bowl disaster after bowl disaster, does it become fair to at least question him? I don't think its asking too much for someone in that position to at least consider running an offense that has a chance to be successful.

I should add that the MAC bowl results also indicate that the MAC is currently weak.

Everyone has criticized Carey and the offense. You just freak out when people also criticize Childers. It's a bad offense. Bad post season coaching. And we also have a bad qb. Yet we still outperformed everyone in the MAC. So most fans mention the good and the bad. You only mention Carey and the offense. Everyone is completely aware of the problems there. Your problem is you don't realize that the coaching and the QB problems can be mutually exclusive. You can have a bad game plan AND a bad QB. Thats what we have. And No, Childers wouldn't be a good qb in a different offense. Missing easy throws is missing easy throws in any offense.

You are not really defending Childers as you often say, what you're really defending is your opinion of him being good and using the "poor young kid" being picked on as a way to defend your position and shame "Carey supporters" who point out he's bad.

We should be a year after year MACC contender, win our assigned bowl game, pick off the occassional P5 team, and develop/graduate exceptional human beings. Apart from the bowl game record, we are doing pretty well. We are not a P5 school/program and to hold ourselves to a P5 standard is unreasonable. We are probably closer to and FCS program than a P5 one. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of factors that are out of our control (TV contracts, state of Illinois budget, etc.)
Others have commented ur post already, but I 100% agree. It's a better ride if you temper expectations :)

All the other MAC programs have similar constraints and challenges but we are coming out on top more than our fair share. I don't have expectations we will play at a P5 level consistently, ever.

I thought this team might go 4-8 at one point, so it's been a pretty good season. Onward to spring ball...
