Grad Transfers
Riley Neal and James Gilbert are both leaving Ball State to become Grad Transfers. I wonder if we’re picking up any...... Sure could use a steady QB for a year while the young guys develop.

Steady QB? We have Marcus Childers. He has two years of experience as a starter.

RE: Grad Transfers
And he has regressed. He needs to be coached up and the competition needs to be open. If he struggles again next year, they have to give the other kids a chance to beat him out. Childers was brutal most of the year. He played well in spurts but overall he is the main reason we were Three-And-Out University and one of the worst offenses in the nation. If Thompson and Hall are not getting it done in practice then give Jiya Wright a chance. If Thompson and Hall aren't up to the job go find a JUCO or grad transfer. This has to be the top offseason priority for the coaching staff. Find a way to get average play from the QB position. Hopefully, we'll have great play from the QB position next season...

I’m mean steadily good, not steadily bad. He had maybe 3 good games all season.

RE: Grad Transfers
Maybe we can get the Bufffalo QB to transfer here. It sounds like he wants to leave Buffalo after the season is over.

RE: Grad Transfers
Why would a grad transfer QB want to come to NIU? Good, bad or indifferent, the head coach is completely committed to this QB. There were several situations during the season that would have justified a switch at the position, but Carey refused to make a change. He made a decision midway through to 2017 season to ride the Childers horse. He has clearly demonstrated that he will not back down from his choice. Barring injury, Childers is NIUs QB for the next two seasons. He will likely leave the program setting a program record for starts. He enters next season as perhaps the most experienced Jr QB in NIUs history. Maybe he can capitalize on the incredible situation he has been given, and takes the next step in 2019 that he did not take in 2018. In any event, this scenario is not ideal to attract grad transfer QB talent.

Not just transfers, why would any HS QB want to come to NIU in such a QB unfriendly system. It's a real dilemma that I am not sure there is a way out of right now. The only solution I can think of is if Carey was held on but mandated to stay away from everything offense. NIU needs an OC with absolute power.

I don’t think you can underestimate the effect of poor WR play either. Can’t get open deep, too many drops, missing the guy like a Galloway who could really make a play. Losing a guy like Beebe last year who could get open and make it easy for the QB really showed this year. Tears sometimes looks he could be the guy to make a play and have a chance to play in Sunday’s and sometimes I wonder why someone else isn’t on the field.
I believe Wesley and DJ Brown both graduated so those are big holes to fill. Hopefully Robinson and Tucker are up to the task.

RE: Grad Transfers
Tyrice Richie is a Dodge City CC transfer who looks like an immediate starter next year. We've had some outstanding Huskies from the Dodge City pipeline.

RE: Grad Transfers
Looking at our redshirts this year, we seem to have a decent amount of WRs and DBs. Just don't see any having an impact for a year or two. I agree, we probably need some transfers (Juco or Grad) who can play right away.

RE: Grad Transfers
If NIU does land a grad transfer at QB it he will not come in to be a backup to Childers. The only way Carey gets one (a grad transfer) is if he is ready to move on from Childers, and he succeeds in conveying that message to the player in question. I would think that if this is going to happen, it needs to be done quickly so the player can enroll this upcoming semester, thus allowing him to participate in spring ball. The clock is ticking on this.

I don't think Carey is even looking for another QB. He doesn't think he needs one.

There is no doubt about that. Careys offense does not even require an effective QB. That is the huge problem

How about a kick returner instead of fair catching?
