RE: Lester Contract Extension
You all realize that an extension isn’t guaranteed money right? It’s a commitment that basically just extends the contract years and buy out... they restructured the buy out to be $600k. So... if I’m reading the details correctly WMU could walk away after next season for $600k....

This is just window dressing ...

RE: Lester Contract Extension
Disappeared due to a vicious and contentious divorce. Ongoing drama draining my finances and energy.

I like Tim Lester. I gave him a pass in 2017 due to all the injuries. Next man up only goes so far and so thin. If we beat BYU we will be at my games prediction for 2018. But we got blown out of games we should not have been and were embarrassed. Team, Lester and University all look bad. No way he deserves a contract extension after year two and 2018 embarrassments. Bad management, bad form, awful decision making on KB's part.

I did not particularly like Peejay. He got lucky in year two and won games he should not have won. Lester was not lucky and in fact looked like a JV coach at a major university at times. You don't reward bad performance or awful performance. We don't reward failures at work and we should not do so at WMU.

If that's the case, I'm all good. However, I highly doubt KB would fire him after next year. If we beat BYU, even if we're 1-11, she wouldn't. He'd need two years of REAL BAD or three years of PRETTY BAD for that to happen, IMO.

This is clearly a well executed move by KB to prevent Lester from being hired away. Just like $800k a year was to prevent other suitors from outbidding WMU when he hired on. Kathy is 3 steps ahead of us fools.

Sometimes I’m surprised by lack of intellect on this board...

Blaming KB for this apparently poor decision in an area of WMU athletics that NONE of us has any experience or expertise in is baffling....

Go ahead and live in a constant bubble of disappointment...

PJ was 1-11 his first year with plenty of talent.

Nah, nothing to do with intellect; boo birds gonna boo bird. Hell, PJ still has his boo birds after delivering the best season in WMU football history.

You extend a coach or you fire him. There’s no wait till the last year or two of the contract. Lester doesn’t deserve to be fired, so extending makes sense especially if they soften the buy out.

Good point and Lester's record after two years is better than the prior staff. He is 13-11 and the prior staff was 8-16. Both going to a bowl game at the end of their second year, and both had their contract extended. The hate on this site for Lester and the current AD is over the top. But I understand, its easy to say these things behind peoples back or not to the members of the team directly. Kind of a cowards way. But I shouldn't expect more.

Lets ride.

RE: Lester Contract Extension
We should be better than this as an institution. This very much reminds me of the Culhane situation. KB seems to love those dashing men. I get that you don't want your guy appearing to be a "lame duck" coach, but we were at least a year away from this even being a potential issue. This seems like a bad business decision, in addition to being a poor football decision. We have underperformed, at least, by any reasonable standard. Lester doesn't seem to even have a "vision" of beating higher level schools, and seems to accept before the game even starts that we won't be as good as the "better" MAC schools, like Ohio and Toledo this year.

Just as many of us were thinking, "two years down, at least there are only three to go", we get this salt in the wound. It's like being in perpetual purgatory.

Seriously? Step back a bit and enjoy your holiday... none of us know what’s going to happen. Relax...

Let us all know who you wish we would have hired that would have been able to continue the recruiting prowess and gotten us to a bowl year two after losing your #1 QB two years in a row!

Relax man...

RE: Lester Contract Extension
Here's the difference between P.J.'s extension and Lester's extension.

Fleck took over a struggling program coming off 4-wins and in huge need of a re-birth. He completely overhauled/rebuilt the program from the ground up and within two years brought in some really impressive recruiting classes, 8 wins, and back to relevancy earning a bowl bid. The progress was obvious (to most) and excitement around the program was growing and very palpable. The program was trending back upwards. An extension was earned.

I'm not saying Lester doesn't deserve this, but it's natural to question "why" given the current state of the program. Personally, I don't get it and I think it's premature. I continue to hope I am proven wrong moving forward.

So you’re saying PJ took a 4 win team and went backwards? Just trying to confirm.

Not comparing apples with apples. Fleck came in after a very poor season, and a slouching program culture. He was compelled to establish a new identity for the team. He essentially decided to reinvent WMU Football, and initiated his own program. Lester inherited an outstanding situation, with a successful culture, an abundance of talented players, and absolutely zero reasons to change anything. He hired coaches on his staff based not on their professional success, but rather because he had a close personal relationship with certain guys.

My wife could be hired as Alabama's coach next year and win half of the games they play, and get them to a bowl game the following year. Would Alabama want to renew her contract for that "success"? Only if someone thinks that is acceptable. WMU's administration apparently believes that, considering everything, the last two years constitute "good enough". Disappointing!

Fleck was not given an extension after going 1-11.

Follow closely...

trend (noun) - a general direction in which something is developing or changing.

Wins (2012-2016)
4, 1, 8*, 8, 13
*extension granted

8 is greater than 4.

Just trying to confirm.

I would certainly think that Flecks defensive coordinator, who applied for the job, would have been a far more logical choice. I would have likewise picked the Ferris St coach over Lester, or one of the other lower division successful coaches.

I was a lot more relaxed a day ago, after calming myself from the disappointment of the past two seasons, but thinking, "ok, next year may show some promise, and provide optimism, and if not there won't be much longer before we can move beyond the 'Lester era'", but then this insult by KB. It's tough to relax without medications as a WMU alum.

Let me just put this out there...

PJ came in to a "struggling" program that lost a few games they shouldn't have...

He goes 1-11 is first year and has the opportunity to give a kid named Zach Terrell some early playing time... not to mention he has Corey Davis playing as a Freshman...

Then the next 3 years he has Zach in EVERY game healthy... He never has to deal with a QB issue...

Lester comes in... has to start a QB with NO game experience... and then gets him going only to lose him the end of the season... and with no real WR experience...

Finally start hitting the stride year 2 and same thing happens... Oh... but he STILL has to rely on a TRUE FROSH to replace him... Thanks PJ for the excellent depth you built here...

I would bet Lester is doing more with less than PJ did his entire time here...

Then maybe your wife should go to Minn, they had a 9-4 team and then won a bowl game. Only to hire a new coach and go 5-7 and then 6-6 and extend their coaches contract. Your wife would work for less then him with all the money your earning.
Lets ride.
