5 wins this year alone ... EMU, Ohio, Turd, BYU, Buffalo
But not good in previous years
Not sure Doreen or Kill were any better, our schedule was one of the weakest in FBS around the Orange Bowl year.
I really miss Doeren, you knew at least going into a game coaching was not going to cost you the game. Amazing what that can do for the morale of a team
I can assure you that the morale of this team is fine. It’s actually great. You have zero basis to support that blanket statement and just spew nothing but BS to support your agenda.
Sorry but the same applies for you, even moreso, because you see a player smiling in a youtube video does not mean Carey deserves to be extended until 2040. Just should not work like that. If you are happy with the results of this team and the direction of the program that is fine, you are entitled to that. There is no reason to trash fans for wanting NIU to get back to the level it was at before.
Ya and what level was that before? A yearly BCS bowl and national title work for you? The problem with some NIU fans like yourself is that you are delusional and need to take down your unreasonable high expectations a notch.
You must be referring to the orange bowl days right?? When NIU under Doeren would beat crappy out of conference teams and then win their conference. If that same team played this years schedule they are not making it to a BCS bowl.
As for the momentum lost after the orange bowl......do I wish we could have string years together of access bowls? Of course. We almost did. But it’s not realistic to sustain especially when your head coach leaves for a power 5 school. You know what happens when head coaches leave MD? Their recruits follow. So when a new head coach comes in they have to start from scratch. If Doeren was paid handsomely and stayed the next 10 years then maybe you have some sort of point. But once again, not realistic, he took a better job.
As for sustainability at the top.....it’s incredibly hard. Who does NIU want to be? Boise State? Ok let’s look at them for a second. They have won consistently over the years and are STILL stuck in the mountain west conference. They are truly the cream of the crop of non power 5 teams and even their consistent succcess couldn’t put them over the top. And guess what they are not in an access bowl this year, or last year either because it’s too damn hard to always do.
How about those other smaller schools who made BCS/access bowls? UConn? Remember them? What happened to them? Exactly. How about WMU. Same opportunity as NIU. Made the cotton bowl. Great recruiting classes. And guess what???? The head coach left for greener pastures and the program took a step back.
Lastly let’s talk UCF. Two straight big bowl games and an undefeated team. They have the best opportunity to take it up to power 5 status. Why? The winning helps, but it’s the fact they have an enrollment of 55,000 students and people actually go to the games. They will come back down to earth soon and not be in an Access bowl consistently, especially when they start playing some formidable out of conference opponents. Even with that success they still can’t get into a power 5 conference.
We are not Ohio State or Alabama. If you are looking for NIU to be in national title contention then you are rooting for the wrong team and should look elsewhere.
