Glad he supports the program during this trying time. But where are the ex players, and rest of fans and donors?

The program is obviously on decline under the carey regime. If you cant see that then keep banging your head bro.

We cant have unrealistic expectations to have double digit wins every season. Especially under the financial situation we are in. Carey does win in the MAC and snags a boneyard victory in NC almost each year. Outside of some questionable personnel decisions that have been well documented on this board, he just falls very short in bowl games against teams we should be competing with.

I think the fan support has been crushed by the espn weeknight tv deal, and a lack of school pride / connection with NIU athletics in the current enrollment body. We are definitely losing a half decade of future alumni fans.

I think the Carey hate mongerers are doing more to erode the fan base at this point than anything else. We’ve seen the effects of the ESPN deal take their toll already. Every time NIU loses, the hate mongerers get worse and worse on things posted on Facebook by NIU Huskies. And there is the Fire Coach Carey Facebook page if anyone has seen that trash.

Two people that I have gone to NIU games with for 15 years didn’t make the trip to Detroit this year. And they have never missed a trip to Detroit. Wasn’t that they couldn’t go, it was because they don’t like Carey and are starting to protest. These guys never had a problem making ESPN midweek games but fuel the anti Carey propaganda on social media. And at least one is not getting season tickets for the first time next year since he won’t pay a penny toward Carey’s salary. It is a sad day when die hard fans are being lost.

And what has the anti Carey crowd accomplished? Nothing. The inner circle who provide the majority of the donations clearly wants him here as he keeps getting extended. Meanwhile, the anti-Carey crowd pulling their season tix and minor to moderate donations are only a few drops in the bucket in the financial picture. However, they are serving to erode the fan base as there is not going to be a different head coach anytime soon.

It truly is a sad day for the shrinking NIU fan base.

He took over at the pinnacle of Huskie Football. There was only way to go from there and that was down. NIU wasn't going to Access Bowls every year. You "fans" should follow Alabama. Then your unrealistic expectations have a chance to be met every year.

Not getting embarrassed every year in a bowl game is an unrealistic expectation?

Even if NIU would have won a bowl this year, the same "fans" would be bitching that they didn't win by enough or that the other team sucked. It's never enough. If NIU doesn't win by 50, then it was a disgrace. NIU won a MAC Championship this year. They have won 7 of 9 division championships and 4 of 8 MAC Championships. Those are not easy even in the MAC. If it was more teams would have done it. Yes the MAC is not a great conference, it is also the one with the smallest budgets. NIU's
sports budget is in the bottom half of the MAC. Yet these "fans" think NIU should be competing and dominating P5 schools with budgets triple their size. I am disappointed when NIU doesn't do well, but I also realistic about what NIU is. Until the student numbers go up, alumni step up and support NIU, and fans actually go to the games, NIU needs to concentrate on winning the MAC, a conference of their peers.

I disagree. Most on here just want to see NIU finally win a bowl game, or at a minimum, not get crushed again.

The question is: where does bowl performance fall in most fans priorities? For me it's 5th. 1st is MACC. 2nd is win the west. 3rd is be bowl eligible. 4th is beat toledo. 5th is win a bowl.

Getting blown out sucks because it's the last image we have of the team untill next year. But overall NIU had a better season than every other MAC team. That will hold me over until next season.

It isn't a simple list of priorities for me. If we'd lost by a couple points in a few games it isn't as big a deal. Losing by a lot EVERY year, especially when the entire conference does poorly, means that NIU was really the tallest midget this year.

No offense HuskieJoe but do you know what happens when you assume?
One, we don't have a lot of "big-time" donors, but you are right saying Chessick has made supportive statements. However, there's no basis to say other "big-time" donors necessarily support him just like there is no basis to say ex-players directly support Carey as much as they continue to support the program. Personally I'm familiar with quite a few ex-players who are concerned about this coach. Since there's no official poll, how do you even know what percentage of the "rest of fans and donors" is that do or don't support Carey. If their support is so "quiet", how do you know it exists?
In an earlier psot you said "I think the Carey hate mongerers are doing more to erode the fan base at this pint than anything else." You honestly think that many people who visit The Dog Pound and made up their mind based on what they read? Seriously?
If the "hate mongerers" are so powerful, then how can Frazier ignore them? I have to agree with a follow-up post by NIU007 that said "Most just want to see NIU finally win a bowl game, or at a minimum, not get crushed." There was a point in time when we were 3-3 in bowls. Sorry, but it's disappointing to be 3-9 in bowl games with six consecutive losses -- all under Carey. Like NIU007 suggested, being 5-7 or 4-8 with a couple losses by six or fewer points would look a lot better.

If you think being 4-8 and losing a crappy bowl game by 3 is better than winning a macc and having a crap bowl game, you’ve lost your mind. We would all like the Huskies to do better in their bowl games, but it is without a doubt the least important game of the season. Ask ball state fans how much fun is 4-8 or 5-7. Heck, just become a ball state fan if that’s better.

FYI-the Mac has one winning bowl season in The last 15. The Mac sucks. NIU is the tallest midget.

RE: Carey Contract Extended Again?
How much has NIU fallen under Carey? Let’s look at the numbers.

This senior class ended its career 29-24. (.547)
2-2 against Toledo
1-2 in MAC Championship Games
0-4 in Bowl Games
1 P5 win
8 home losses
Lost at home to an FCS School
Had a losing season

When these seniors committed to NIU the outgoing senior class was 46-10. (.821)
4-0 against Toledo
3-1 in MAC Championship Games
1-3 in Bowl games
4 P5 wins
1 home loss
Made a BCS Bowl
Won 11+ games 4 years in a row

This was a proud mid-major powerhouse. Now people are celebrating division titles and becoming bowl eligible to prop up Carey’s accomplishments.

F*** Carey.

When these seniors committed to NIU the outgoing senior class was 46-10. (.821)
4-0 against Toledo
3-1 in MAC Championship Games
1-3 in Bowl games
4 P5 wins
1 home loss
Made a BCS Bowl
Won 11+ games 4 years in a row

This was a proud mid-major powerhouse. Now people are celebrating division titles and becoming bowl eligible to prop up Carey’s accomplishments.

F*** Carey.

I’ll obliterate this post when I have more time.

All FACTS besides the final two words.

Seems there are plenty of big time donors and ex players quietly supporting him and are not getting into a debate about it on social media.

I'm not sure about this, Rabid. Typically, you are the top dog and best wordsmith for the pro-Carey camp, but do you really believe the bowl game holds no significance whatsoever? The game that you play the entire season to try to get to is less important than every single conference and out of conference game? You hold that Ball State or Western Illinois game in higher regard than Duke or Boise State?

As others have stated - it's not just losing these, so to speak, meaningless games - it's how we lose them. We get blown out and embarrassed. Time and time again. This has to fall on Coach Carey. One or two losses can be explained away, six becomes a pattern.

RE: Carey Contract Extended Again?
Next year if NIU gets a bowl game the spread will put us a sizeable underdog regardless of who they're playing in the bowl game, just because of the previous pattern of ineptitude in bowl games. Then when they lose by 28, 7 will come on here and say " well, we were underdogs, so it's okay that they got crushed again. Just a bad match up."
