Hurd hires a right hand man, Ron Loghry (next WAC commissioner?)
[Image: c37ed0b7-b1a9-4cac-96ea-2d75804c207f.png]

His background: https://bigskyconf.com/staff.aspx?staff=2

Ron Loghry has over 20 years of experience with the Big Sky, as he serves as the league's Deputy Commissoner.

Loghry has previously served as the Director of Championships, where he handled the league’s television contracts and corporate sponsorships.

Prior to his position as Chief of Staff, Loghry served two years as the Assistant Commissioner/Media Relations and two years as Assistant Commissioner/Operations. Loghry took over the Big Sky’s compliance duties on Nov. 1, 2002.

In addition, Loghry’s duties at the Big Sky include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the conference office. He is responsible for producing all Big Sky Conference schedules and directs the Properties Division of the league. Loghry is the conference office liaison to all coaches’ groups and to the NCAA, and is an ex-officio member of all Big Sky Conference committees. He is a member of the NCAA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee and a past member of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer West Regional advisory committee.

Loghry came to the conference office from the University of Wyoming, where he was an assistant in the sports information department for three years and was pursuing his master’s degree in communication.

Prior to his stint with Wyoming, Loghry had been the Operations Coordinator for the Continental Basketball Association and before that he performed a one-year internship with the Western Athletic Conference, where he was an administrative and media relations assistant. At the WAC, Loghry was the media director for the league’s wrestling championship and was the assistant championship director for baseball, men’s and women’s basketball and cross country.

Loghry was an undergraduate assistant in the University of Wyoming’s sports information office for two years before he received his bachelor’s degree in journalism/public relations in 1990. He was the recipient of the 1989 Admiral Emory S. Land Award, which is given annually to the University of Wyoming student who has contributed the most to the promotion of Cowboy athletics.

A Riverton, Wyo. native, Loghry and his wife Michelle have a son Connor and a daughter Gentry.

Next tweet pretty much sums up the state of WAC football (not happening)

[Image: 5f1c5312-7a8e-4767-95a7-6d7149673c67.png]

Loghry decided to make a move after being passed over for the Big Sky top role. Hurd is up there in years, I think he is 67, so retirement is looming in a few years.

Note: these tweet pics only have a lifespan of 14 days. So here is the link if you need to find it after that: https://twitter.com/WAC_Commish/status/1...0414675968

Hurd is trying to dictates his successor. Yes Loghry would be convenient, but the WAC needs to do a national search for the next WAC comish. No need to be in a hurry. Loghry was the Big Skyies equivalent to what Hurd was to the WAC before he was named comish. We do not need another unambitious commissioner that has been a lackey most of their career.

But can't we all get behind Ron helping the WAC pivot it's platform to Pluto TV? He handled the Big Sky's television contracts, and isn't that where they landed?

The wac needs to search far and deep for our next commissioner. And I don’t think we should hope hurds hire does well, we need to expect it! Without a qualified search and member vetting I say no way on Hurds selection as a supposed placed succession.

Hurd is enamored with ESPN platforms and not open to anything else.

I don't see how those tweets have anything to do with football "not happening".

Pluto has been great with all home games on TV on any platform very convenient and free. Could be better with a conference show or coaches show in my opinion.

The WAC should work to get an agreement like the Atlantic Sun and Big South have with the Big Sky. Guaranteeing a team a football home in BSC or Pioneer.

How is he enamored with them when just the WAC title is on ESPNU and no WAC teams besides NMSU and get home games on ESPN3 regularly? And that's just their own broadcasts being picked up.

They should scrap the WAC DN and get on ESPN3/+ or Pluto TV

Except the Big South had 6 football members, about to drop to 5, when they made that deal. The Big Sky is already bloated at 13 and would rather drop members like SUU and UNC

The WAC should get with Stadium. They have several conference Digital Networks streamed on it, like MWC and WCC. Its also free, where ESPN + is only a plus to ESPN's wallet.

The WAC DN will likely stay around, as long as GCU has its way. They pay Blueframe, the company that maintains the WAC DN, extra to put all there sports on the WAC DN, whereas everyone else gets a limited number of games for each sport.

Hurd is enamored with ESPN, because its the only network discussed at WAC meetings. He stresses there is no other point to reach out to other networks. He learned it all from Karl Benson when he was WAC comish.

NMSU had a separate agreement with ESPN to stream games on ESPN 3. AS you said they'd just pick up the feed. This year NMSU moved away from ESPN 3 and on to FOX Sports Go and Eleven Sports Twitch Channel.

Do you have a link to anything detailing the GCU paying Blueframe thing you mention above? That sounds more made up to me than having any actual basis in reality, but I could be way wrong.

RE: Hurd hires a right hand man, Ron Loghry (next WAC commissioner?)
This at a minimum is what the WAC should have right now:
The Northeast Conference (NEC) 26-game national basketball television package for the 2018-19 season. Among the highlights:

22 games will be televised on ESPN networks this season.
CBS Sports Network will televise four NEC men’s games.
In total, the NEC will receive 26 national exposures on ESPN/CBS platforms.
ESPN3 will carry 13 NEC hoops game this season, all of which will also air on NEC Front Row.
Five games will air exclusively on ESPN+, the new multi-sport, direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service.
This year’s NEC slate includes 11 women’s games.
A total of six NEC Tournament games will be televised come March.

The NEC will have two conference games on ESPNU and four conference games on CBS Sports Network. The men's championship game will be on ESPN/ESPN2 and the woman's championship on ESPNU.

The NEC has a conference Net ranking of #28. They had an RPI conference ranking of #28 last season, #30 in 2016-2017 and #29 in 2015-2016. The NEC was last in attendance per game among all conferences at 1,657 per game. They have consistently been one of the worst conferences in D1 college basketball yet they have a better TV deal than the WAC does.

I actually think that being on the ESPN platforms is a good thing, but not if you cannot get some of the conference games on national TV. I don't see how a Central Connecticut State at St. Francis on ESPNU or a Wagner at Bryant game on CBS Sports Network is a better game than a game involving NMSU or Seattle or GCU or UVU. Seattle at GCU is not only two top 15 TV markets, but it would be two good basketball teams playing before a sellout crowd.

Being with ESPN is not a bad plan, but they have to get some TV exposure from it. Seven of the nine teams in the WAC have winning records. One out of ten in the NEC. Three out of nine in the Big West. The WAC needs some basic respect and exposure. Hurd needs to fix that.

I agree the WAC should get with Stadium. They have Stadium plus which some games will be on, but the schools need to produce the content to be on Stadium.
That seems that NMSU and GCU would be the only teams capable.
Although, Stadium will produce some games. It would be nice to see some WAC games on Stadium OTA.

All WAC schools have to do that to be on the WAC DN. With the MW, Stadium picks up the feed from their digital network. The same can happen with the WAC DN.
