I honestly didn't know they were mathematically still alive. They have been trash since the early 90s and nobody cares about them anymore outside a few diehards. I bet there are more Cowboys and Steelers fans in this region.

If I find the source I will post it, but I thought I saw a post that showed fanhoods of each region based on number of facebook likes in the area. Unfortunately, Hampton Roads is Cowboy country if you go by number of people who like a team on facebook. Not scientific by any stretch.

Cowboys are a pretty strong bandwagon. Same with Packers (that's me). DC is just too far from this area to have a real influence to become a skins fan. It certainly doesn't help they have been mediocre at best for the last 15 years or so. This area being so military heavy, we truly are a melting pot of fanhoods. It's cool, but sometimes I do wish we had a unified fanhood with everyone here. My wish is ODU could become that force, but it seems difficult to get everyone on board to follow a mid major college program.

It makes good sense. We don't have a team and the media tries to force the Redskins on us. If you hate the Redskins, you might gravitate to their rivals. That and the kids that watched them when they dominated for about a decade and built a bandwagon are now in their 30s and 40s. The Giants are pretty strong in the area too.

Hampton Roads has lots of Military.
When I was in, we used to joke that 50% of Texas was in the Navy. It sure seemed that way on both my ships.

I think Hampton Roads is closer culturally to the Carolinas, as such we should be able to root for a common Team. Leave the Redskins for Richmond, Nova and the surrounding area.

RE: Heinicke to get first start on Sunday.
I grew up in Richmond and I'd say a majority of people at my HS were Dallas fans. They won all the time so I guess I get it. I was born in NY and the Giants traveled with me when we moved to VA when I was a kid (thanks to my dad). Living in DC makes me hate the skins the most, but there is really nothing worse that a big group of Dallas fans, most of which have never been to Texas in their lives. They really are the worst.

I wonder how much of that is connected to the strong Tidewater and Virginia connections to the early Hornets (Mourning, J.R. Reid, Dell Curry). I remember one of the local TV stations was part of the Hornets network in the 80s and 90s.

Otherwise, how much does Tidewater connect to Charlotte or for that matter the Triangle or Triad? D.C. is its own unique culture that doesn't replicate, but I don't see the relationships with the population centers in Carolina. I guess in the sense that Tidewater and northeastern N.C. are related, but do people in northeastern N.C. relate to the rest of their state more than coastal Virginia or even the Eastern Shore in terms of culture?

Perhaps we're not as tight as I eluded to. But, Charlotte sure feels more like Hampton Roads than DC/NoVA does. That place is just feels off to the rest of the state.

So a team in Texas, halfway across the country, is the next best bet? 07-coffee3

Don't take me too seriously haha I'm just a bitter lifelong Redskins fan from the Northern VA area. HR makes more sense due to no ties to DC and the melting pot that the military brings, but the amount of Cowboys fans in and around the DC area where I grew up and currently reside infuriates me. It's unfortunate that my hometown team's biggest rivals is also one of the biggest bandwagon teams in all of sports.

But not to take away from this thread, I forgot the skins play Saturday so I can watch them and watch Taylor on Sunday 02-13-banana

While we don't have many ODU alums in the pros, Bazemore and Heinicke represent the University extremely well. Baseball is a different beast when it comes to allegiance to College, but Verlander isn't too shabby either. Certainly married well...but now I am straying from my original thought....
