Also, a string of bowl losses starts to become extraordinary. Add to that string that they were blow outs and it becomes a story.
There is one more reason it means something. If you keep winning the MAC and then losing to everyone you play from the Sun Belt or CUSA, it indicates that the MAC was weak and takes some of the shine off of the MAC title.

+10000 If you google Boca Raton bowl all the headlines are basically UAB blows out or dominates NIU. Every news station I saw last night had it as a story and all mentioned it was NIUs 6th straight bowl loss.

At what point do people just say they can't beat anyone but bad teams or teams in the MAC, which has a lot of bad teams, especially when playing other G5 conferences in the bowl games. It starts a perception from any outsider that NIU is just an average team. Which is what they have been for a few seasons if not below average.

Some on here think we are a top G5 team. I used to think that way too, but I thought about that more last night and don't think we are even in the top 10 anymore.

As someone else said, I truly question accepting bowl bids especially if they are going to piss away money the school doesn't have.

Not to defend Carey, but the direction NIU football is going, greater than 50 percent of the blame has to go on Sean Frazier. There is just no way around that. Carey has been allowed to not have any accountability and low standards, because he is being disproportionally rewarded for it. If my parents gave me 20 bucks for every A and B I got as a child in school, I would not make the extra effort to get an A. Being a slightly above mid major is all this athletic program is interested in right now.

G5 Teams better than NIU without a doubt in 2018

Army
UFC
Cincinnati
USF
Memphis
UAB
Boise State
Utah State
Fresno State
Toledo
Western Michigan
Miami
App State
Troy
Georgia Southern

Probably being kind. And I took team they lost to in the MAC as better than NIU. Just as I think BYU and Buffalo are better than NIU but didn’t beat them.

Probably at least 5-8 other teams in G5 NIU is worse than.

Next season there may only be 10 teams worse than NIU in the entire country. We are headed to dark times for sure.

The team in 2019 with this roster is an 8 win group. Then make it + or - 2 wins depending on QB play.

We only won 8 this year and are losing our best defensive player, not sure how you see 8 wins next year.

This team with this roster in 2019 is a 6 win group , then add on the Carey effect for minus or minus 1 to 2 games, and you are looking at a 4 to 6 win team next year. I think a much greater probability of 4 wins than 6 wins.

Our QB play was terrible this year and we won 8. If that happens next year then that’s - 2 and we only win 6 games. 8 wins is predicated on what we’d hope to be better play from that position in 2019.

I’m expecting slightly better play at qb, And maybe 7 wins.

Rabid if you cannot see by now that the problems with this team are so much larger at coaching I just don't know what to say. NIU was playing checkers out there last night with this coaching staff. By far, the coaching inadequacies are important than QB play. Ill say it till im blue in the face, a QB cannot be successful in this system right now, just isn't going to happen.

Also add onto next year, Carey wont be playing for any contract extension, he wont be up for consideration until next year by STF when it will be 2 years until his contract is up. That adds another reason to be more pessimistic for next season, extra lack of motivation to change from our coaching staff.

I'm really happy I am not as sad and angry about NIU as many of you are. A clean team, a season that exceeded most expectations, a program representing a great university, young men going onto the rest of their lives as Huskie graduates.

But go on, go on with the math about the -2 Carey Factor and the high school MAC. You've long ago lost sight of what is important.

Lord Stanley NIU was embarrassed on a national stage last night, for the 6th year in a row. If you don't expect more out of NIU than that, I just don't know what to say. The program is headed in a really bad direction and what is worse, we do not have an AD that is competent or even gives a damn to change things. I am done blaming Carey , if someone offered me a few million dollars to produce what NIU did last night, Id take that money and run to. The focus has to go onto Frazier. The problem is, NO ONE IS EVALUATING FRAZIER. That is so damn frustrating. p.s. -2 is being generous with the Carey effect

The offense is garbage. Totally agree. That doesn’t change the fact that Childers has been bumbling around for 13.5 games. He’s just not good MD. The missed passes. Putting the ball on the ground. Those are Childers things. The offense limits his production. He limits his ability. Maybe if he found the absolutely perfect offense to play in he could be OK. But he lacks touch and instinct. His running improved this year. His passing may have regressed.

Carifio wrote a nice piece on the measurement of the program's success today. As much as we want to paint Carey and this team in a negative light, that in itself is not a complete narrative. They weren't great this year, but they remain a strong program. These guys overcame adversity and performed in critical moments. That says plenty about the culture of NIU Football and is merit for optimism.

Every QB regresses under Carey because playing a QB in this offense is like one of those cults sacrificing a human to appease a god. Childers is a human sacrifice. I feel for the kid.

The program is headed in a really bad direction?

I will say this once, and only once.

OOC win vs BYU
MAC West title
MAC Football championship
Bowl game against a good opponent
First Team All-American

If only ANY OTHER ATHLETIC TEAM at NIU could mirror the football team's success.

The team is headed in a “good Mac team” direction. But for some reason a good portion of this board thinks NIU should be headed toward greatness, but none of them can give a solid reason as to why.
