RE: Another embarrassing bowl loss.
Did Carey Fall down on the one TD? Smalls, Embry were out. We had true freshman starting and playing meaningful minutes. UAB QB was great. Their WR was Galladay like. Did Carey fumble? We played a better team. I like that NIU never quits. They could have hung their heads and given up but they did not. Childers has his limitations but he is a tough kid. Towards end of game, he was not sliding but lower the shoulder to get additional yards. UAB had too many big plays.

RE: Another embarrassing bowl loss.
They were just better than us, period. If our DBs were healthy it would have helped, but we weren't getting much pressure on their QB all night either. And frankly he played out his ass. On the season Johnston completed 57% of his passes for 101 yds/game and 11 TDs in 13 games. Last night 17-29, 373 and 4 TDs. WTF! Was like Childers in the MACC--surprise! Meanwhile, our O-line was overmatched (I think they were overrated all season) and Childers was constantly under pressure. Plus unlike against Buffalo, our receivers got very little separation. Game was a big letdown after the MACC, for sure. So I think I'll go back to dwelling on that game instead of this one.

RE: Another embarrassing bowl loss.
I was certainly disappointed with the 3 TD bowl loss yesterday. Ubasi will be playing on Sundays just too much without Embry and Smalls.

Congrats to UAB on getting their program back and their first bowl win.

As for the UAB defense, what a bunch of cheap, undisciplined thugs. 35 seniors mostly Juco transfers, 3 or 4 targeting penalties, and the UAB player who launched himself at Robinson early in the game and was carted off since his neck got snapped attempting a tackle leading with the helmet. There also were plenty of UAB defenders coming in late while the NIU guy was already on the ground that should have been called for unnecessary roughness. The UAB coach seems to encourage this type of play by arguing with the officials about blatant targeting. And the way the UAB players high fived the ejected player as though he should be commended for the cheap hit is nothing short of deplorable.

I’ll take winning a conference championship and losing a bowl game by 3 TDs over being a being a dirty program like UAB. Proud of how we kept playing till the end and didn’t quit despite the dirty play.

For all the Carey haters that put the Carey hate over supporting their alma mater, he is going to be here for three more years. If competing in the MAC isn’t good enough for you, either put your money where you mouth is to buy out Saban or you are free to jump off the bandwagon, don’t renew your season tickets, stop watching, and don’t let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out!

They were favored by 2 points. They weren't that much better than us.

I should point out that injuries at cornerback left us with Tifonte Hunt playing hurt and a bunch of freshmen but kudos to their receiver for getting open and to their QB for hitting him.

The talent disparity is Carey's fault due to poor recruiting early in his tenure. I believe, or want to believe anyway, that the team is on the upswing talent wise with good recruiting classes in 2017, 2018 and hopefully tomorrow. It was probably a miracle for this team to win conference but I'll take it. They definitely need to upgrade talent on offense and hopefully we'll see improvement there next year.

The UAB QB had a career night. It looked like they worked very hard during bowl prep to rehearse their routes, throws, and timing. The preparation really paid off for them. Makes you wonder what our guys were doing during practice because they looked lost. Also, I'm pretty sure our coaches knew about Ubosi but they didn't pay any extra attention to him? Did our defensive coaches start taking advice from our offensive coaches? Pretty sure we knew Ezekiel Elliott was an NFL RB when we played Ohio State and we were able to shut him down. It was clear from the start of yesterday's game that our guys were flat. They were on vacation mode and had no juice, spark, intensity, desire to win this game. It's really sad. They played like they did against Miami-Ohio and WMU. They had nothing to play for and the coaches are to blame. If they had installed an exciting game plan that the kids were excited about, excited to practice, and excited to implement in the game, there would have been juice and excitement. But it was the same thing they've done all year and the kids looked like they were just going through the motion. UAB sure looked excited about their game plan and playing in the bowl. Maybe Frazier can make Carey hire a bowl consultant. Hopefully, Tuke is available during bowl preparation and can give him the recipe for success because I am sick and tired of this.

Sorry, but we have the right to question why we get shellacked in every bowl game. And what does it mean to win the MAC (and do nothing else of note) if the MAC is once again terrible? I'm starting to think they should not accept a bowl invite. There are excuses and rationalizations every time they get blown out.

We need to recruit a kicker who can put ball through the end zone. The kick returns hurt.

You beat me to it. I do not believe I have ever seen that before in any football game. A player gets thrown out of the game for giving a cheap shot, and the whole team congratulates him. That is also a knock the the officiating. Shouldn't the player be personally escorted to the locker room by an official after delivering a shot like that?

UAB should have been flagged again for that.

The UAB Dra-goons!

I think Rod Carey is starting to affect the line. Vegas looks at the stats. Then they note that this is a Rod Carey Huskie team, and they add seven more points to the spread.

It sure seemed to me like UAB used their time between being selected for the Boca Bowl and the game studying NIU and figuring out how to exploit the Huskies weaknesses. It seemed like Carey's crew just said,"Let's just run the same game plan we always run."

You'd think they would've run the Second Half of the MACC game plan and let it hang loose. But NOPE...

I agree. I think it is a cultural thing at this point though. After six of these games it appears to be pretty apparent this staff could care less about winning these games. The season ends with the MACC and the bowl is nothing more than a reward for the players.

And frankly you do not need a Saban type coach to compete in these games. No team in the country consistently shows as poorly in the postseason as NIU. NIU plays on the main ESPN channel, what like once a season? And completely gets out coached, out hustled, and out worked every time in embarrassing fashion. How is that good exposure for the program?

And they have been playing mostly Group of 5 teams in these games. Getting dismantled every year by non-power teams is not a good look for the program. MAC titles are important but always lose a bit of luster when you realize how inferior of a league the MAC is relative to other FBS leagues.

UAB had a good season but they also lost to Coastal Carolina and Middle Tennessee this year. The only FBS teams they beat by more than 24 were a 2-11 Rice team and 3-9 UTSA program. NIU was UAB's third biggest margin of victory this season. So what exactly is the value of NIU playing in these bowl games?

The best quarterback from DeKalb is playing at Dartmouth. Carey never recruited him and both his parents are NIU graduates. Derek Kyler had an outstanding sophomore year leading Dartmouth to 9-1 record.

Glad to see NIU educated these parents well enough to understand the difference between NIU and Dartmouth.
Dartmouth is an Ivy League school that is consistently ranked among the best in the world academically.

Any parent who would advise their kid to attend NIU over Dartmouth, is an idiot.

A little harsh, but yeah.

And from a purely football standpoint, Dartmouth is FCS. Probably a reason besides brains why he's not playing QB at a higher level.

UAB. A program that did not exist a few years ago was bigger, stronger and faster than NIU, a team that went to the Orange Bowl a few years ago.

UAB was the better team but that doesn't mean people aren't to be held accountable. There was some horrific coaching last night. The freshman DB was torched in the MACC yet we don't slide safety help to him with Ubosi. Really? Also with the game out of hand let's see what Thompson can do. Too many missed throws by Childers and it has been that way all year. He constantly has accuracy issues and when you are down 24 in the 4th quarter of a bowl game lets see what the backup QB looks like. I will never bad mouth the kids because they are playing their hearts out and trying their best. Some of them just have limited abilities and skill sets. That being said it can't be ignored that Carey cannot get his teams prepared for Bowl Games against Utah St., Boise, Marshall, UAB, etc. These are not Power 5 schools!!!! Should've been able to get at least one win here.

I generally support Carey but last night was terrible. Again. His bowl record and performances speak for themselves. It's embarrassing to see our Huskies and MAC champions get their A$$ beat. Team was blatantly unprepared, not focused and played soft. Embarrassing bowl loss. Again.

Ugh.

Didn't want to start a new thread but why did we burn Fotis Kokosioulis's red shirt. He waved him arm for a free catch on most kick offs. What benefit did that have to this years team?

On top of the embarrassing game, why did we not bring our entire band? Following a great show by the UAB band ours was maybe 1/5th the size and gave the impression (which I believe to be accurate) that NIU doesn't care about bowls enough to go all in.

The Huskies fan attendance seemed very good to me but hard to tell comparison wise the the UAB attendance without walking to the other side and looking across.

Pretty much how I feel as well. These Bowl Games are important, I got calls and text's last night from people I have not heard from in years. People watch bowl games, we have to perform better than we did last night, it was a $hit show for sure. No Bueno

The notion that bowl game wins or losses are meaningless is somewhat true. But it comes with a qualifier. They can't be extraordinary in some way. A Boca Bowl loss or win does little to nothing for your program if its 21-20. No one really notices that. But getting blown out, that gets peoples attention more. Bad attention. Also, a string of bowl losses starts to become extraordinary. Add to that string that they were blow outs and it becomes a story.

Yes this sums up bowls about right. NIU has now burned up all its reputation gained from 2000 to 2012 , I fear starting next season we will.see a Huskies closer to the 1990s than the 2000s. And there is not a damn thing we do about it with Carey here 3 more years
