@ Georgia State -- Wed, Dec 19, 7 PM (ESPN+)

The Hawks head to Atlanta to face former CAA foe Georgia State, now in the Sun Belt. The Panthers enter this contest sitting at 7-4 and # 64 in the RPI. They lost to a ranked Kansas State squad on Saturday as part of a challenging non-conference schedule to date. GSU also recently knocked off a 6-3 Alabama squad on Dec 4 in a quality road victory.

When adjusting for schedule strength, the Panthers' offense has been quite impressive, ranking # 74 in the nation in offensive efficiency per Ken Pomeroy. Their defense checks in at # 165, placing them # 120 overall.

6-3 junior guard D'Marcus Simonds leads the offensive attack for Georgia St., ranking # 33 in the nation in scoring (20.9 ppg). Simonds stuffs the stat sheet for the Panthers, partly due to his gaudy 36 minutes per game. The Gainesville, GA product is averaging 3.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks, while shooting .450 from the field. Hope he's on your fantasy team!

3 other starters are averaging double figures for the Panthers. 6-6 senior forward Malik Benlevi (12.0 ppg), 6-5 senior forward Jeff Thomas (11.3 ppg) and 6-3 sophomore point guard Kane Williams (10.9 ppg). Benlevi is a stretch big that is the team's best perimeter threat (.391 3-pt %) and also leads the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and blocked shots (14). Thomas also can hoist up the three, but hasn't been as efficient (.333), though he's 20-23 (.870) from the charity stripe. Williams has been a great distributor for the Panthers, flashing a nice A/TO ratio (2.25).

GSU has been great at forcing turnovers this season, averaging an impressive 8.5 steals per game. This ranks them 38th in the country. They've forced 15.1 turnovers per game while only giving the ball away 12.3 times per contest. This of course doesn't bode well for the Seahawks, who rank # 323 in the nation in turnovers per game (16.4).

The fact they are good at forcing TO does not bode well for us at all as 08 pointed out

Can the Hawks beat the spread? It has gotten that bad lately on the road especially having the 2 key PG injuries. I hope that they can get that better and some of the guys can step up with suddenly more PT.

Seahawks Face Old CAA Foe In Atlanta

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's basketball team continues its challenging early schedule this week by concluding the non-conference slate with a pair of games in Georgia.

The Seahawks, 4-7, visit former Colonial Athletic Association rival Georgia State, 7-4, on Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Atlanta and then scoot down to Macon for a Saturday date with Mercer as the curtain closes on the non-conference schedule prior to the Christmas break.

Coach C.B. McGrath's club has dropped three in a row to high-profile opponents, including last Saturday's setback at nationally-ranked Furman, and heads to the Peach State looking for a couple wins. The trip will be extra meaningful for Georgia products Devontae Cacok (Riverdale), Jay Estime (Lilburn) and Alex O'Connell (Roswell).

"Our guys are frustrated about their performance at Furman because they didn't play well," McGrath said during his weekly radio/Facebook Live show at Buffalo Wild Wings. "We tell them to focus on the process and get better day-by-day and possession-by-possession."

"There's going to be a lot of family and friends to support those guys and us. They have been very important to us during their careers."

Georgia State was tabbed to finish first in the Sun Belt Conference by the league's coaches, collecting all 12 first-place votes. Junior guard D'Marcus Simonds was selected to the Preseason First-Team and senior guard Devin Mitchell picked to the Second-Team.

"Georgia State doesn't have any true post players, so they spread the court and shoot three's. That's a concern. They also play a match-up zone and that's hard to simulate. It might take four or five passes, but we hope to get some good looks."

UNCW is playing only its fourth true road game of the season. The Seahawks dropped a 97-93 overtime decision at Campbell in the season opener on Nov. 6, fell to No. 14 North Carolina, 97-69, on Dec. 5 in Chapel Hill and suffered the loss last weekend at Furman.

Senior forward Devontae Cacok tops three players in double figures for the Seahawks with 14.5 points per game and a CAA-leading 11.1 rebounds each contest. Redshirt junior forward Jeantal Cylla is collecting 13.2 points and redshirt junior guard Ty Taylor is contributing 10.0 points.

The Panthers are led by the talented Simonds, who averages 20.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. Malik Benlevi (12.0), Jeff Thomas (11.3) and Kane Williams (10.9) give GSU four in double digits.

Eight of GSU's first 11 games have been away from the GSU Sports Arena, where Ron Hunter's team stands 3-0. The Panthers outscored Chattanooga, 95-88, one week ago in its last home outing.

Live Seahawk Digital Network (SDN) coverage of the UNCW-GSU contest starts at 6:45 p.m. with Mike Vaccaro, the "Voice of the Seahawks," on the call. Visit UNCWsports.com/SDN for live audio coverage.

A radio broadcast of the game may be heard on 95.9 FM "The Breeze" | WKXB HD 2 – 95.9 FM and 99.9 HD2 and live stats are available at UNCWStats.com.

THE STORYLINES

THE LAST MEETING: In the last game between UNCW and GSU on Feb. 6, 2013, in Trask Coliseum, redshirt freshman Craig Ponder led five players in double figures as UNCW held off the Panthers, 76-72. The Seahawks shot 61.5 percent in the first half and wound up hitting 52.9 percent for the game, including 9-of-18 behind the arc. Keith Rendleman added his 13th double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Cedrick Williams chipped in 14 off the bench. Rookie R.J. Hunter, a first-round draft pick by the Boston Celtics, scored 20 in the first half for GSU and finished with 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting.

SEAHAWKS VS. HUNTER: Tonight is just the fifth time the Seahawks have faced GSU's Ron Hunter. UNCW beat the Panther skipper for the first time in the last pairing between the two CAA rivals.

THE SERIES: UNCW and GSU are colliding for the 20th time tonight. The Panthers lead the series by a narrow 10-9 margin, but have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.

SEAHAWKS VS. SUN BELT: Tonight is the only the second matchup between the CAA and Sun Belt in 2018-19. UNCW's win over Arkansas State on Nov. 23 in Asheville, N.C., represents the only clash between the two conferences this season.

NEXT UP: Following tonight's game, the Seahawks make the 83-mile trek south to Macon to take on Mercer in the first meeting between the two teams since 1978. UNCW then breaks for the Christmas holiday before opening CAA action on Dec. 29 with a home date against the College of Charleston at Trask Coliseum.

Georgia State does have weaknesses. Their opponents shoot threes .365, they shoot free throws .635, their rebounding differential is -5.5 per game and their assist differential is -3.8 per game. I made up the last statistic. Their top two rebounders average 9.9 combined. Devin Mitchell, who was on the Sun Belt Preseason Second Team, missed the first 7 games and has played the last 4. Including him, they have only eight players averaging at least 5 minutes.

I spend so long typing statistics after Hofstra games that I doubt I will post in this topic tonight. I'm more likely to post in this topic if there's a rare event like Cacok gets 20 rebounds, somebody mades 7 of 8 threes, or somebody shoots 0-for-10. I'll look at your score, but I don't know if I will post here. I'm not trying to be mean or say that it would be a bad loss. Of the three CAA teams with many fans here, I like your fans the best.

I was just joking EvanJ. I do appreciate your stats, but the reiterating of our 43 point loss kind of got to me. Keep doing what you do my man.

RE: @ Georgia State -- Wed, Dec 19, 7 PM (ESPN+)
Georgia State belonged to the Sun Belt Conference in the late 1970s. The conference required its members to play conference games in the largest public arena in its city. The reason was so no team could have a huge home court advantage in a small on-campus gym.

Georgia State had to play in the Omni, a 16,000 seat arena near the campus where the Atlanta Hawks and Flames played. Georgia State's attendance was listed as 2-3,000, but the crowds looked much smaller. One time a Charlotte Observer reporter counted the crowd during a UNCC-GSU game and ended up around 180. After that, GSU's crowds were announced at a more accurate level.

In the 1991 NCAA Tournament, Georgia State was placed in Atlanta as a 16 seed. They were asked when they wanted to play. Most teams in that situation ask for the night time slot. GSU asked for noon. The NCAA asked why. The school officials said they had very few non-student fans, so they might be able to entice some students to walk to the game after Friday morning classes. A few came.

As part of the 1996 Olympics, a smaller arena was built on the Georgia State campus. It became the home venue for the Panthers after the Olympics.

Panthers jacking up some 3s and not hitting anything. Still a little too sloppy for my liking with 3 turnovers in the first 4 minutes

What I notice most about our team is that other teams always dictate the game. We're at their mercy, playing their game. We might have 30 turnovers tonight.
