RE: Transfers
From what I was told Arnold knew that Larussa was gone before he decided to transfer. He knows he's behind Williams at the very least.

RE: Transfers
Indeed Wolff will surely redshirt.

We have three, maybe four QBs that will compete in 2019.

1, JUCO first team All American Stone Smartt,
2. Steven Williams.
3. Jonah Fitzgerald
4. RFR 2 star Isaiah Spencer, who was offered at UVA, is a dark horse that has played WR, but could still get a shot at QB.

IMHO, Smartt is the hands down favorite to become the starter in 2019.

I have no inside info so it may be that Spencer has already been "moved" to WR, but if not I think Spencer may surprise, and challenge Smartt for the #2.
I am not yet sold on Williams, for a couple of reasons.

Looking at the size, athletic abilities and skills of the above, the handwriting was on the wall for both DA and BL.

DA should flourish in FCS where his size will not be such a hindrance.

Arnold to Chattanooga

Damn, he might have been the starter next year.

He probably knew or at least believed that he wouldn’t. Can’t imagine his departure and BL’s departure happened in vacuums.

From reliable sources, the QB battle next year is Smartt v. Williams. They still have hope for Williams. Wolff will need a year of development.

Damn, that's a good looking stadium they play in.

Tnx.
I knew they were looking at him as a receiver, but he is still listed as a QB.

The offensive game plan for next year is heavy on the run and RPO. Utilizing LaLa and Knight and the running abilities of Smartt or Williams. The key is whether Scott can turn around the OL, which they are very confident about.

Lala and Knight could be at least as good, if not better, than the combination of Lawry and Cox, (sans the end of game brute force of Cox vs gassed defenses).

I like what I see from Smartt's films (yeah I know, highlights, not lowlights). He has quick feet, and a quick release. He has what appears to be great vision. He throws well on the run. You really don't seem him scramble for any length of time as he either passes quickly or takes off and runs.
So yes, he is ideal for the RPO.
It remains to be seen at our level of course, but his runs are so prolific that he seems to be a "man among boys".

You are in a much better position to know than I am (no position at all), but I am not so confident with respect to Steven Williams at this time. Fortunately he seems to have the necessary physical tools.

As for the OLine, I am cautiously optimistic, in large part because of the predicted upgrade in Strength and Conditioning.

We always start the season wanting to be run oriented, realize we don't have the offensive line required to run, and then end the season more balanced / pass heavy. Apparently Brian Scott doesn't learn his lesson. It's personnel and scheme. If you want to be run first, you have to deal with at least 8 guys in the box.

Based on what we have seen to date, seems like more bad QB choices if DA was clearly behind SW to the extent that they don't even need to get through Spring to make that determination. Arnold seems at least on par with him.

Seems we hear that every offseason, then realize after a couple awful games early that the only way we can move the ball is to throw it 40 times a game.

I can see that Dray Arnold has played very little at ODU, yall's take on him though?

Dual threat style QB?

Any info is appreciated.

With the NCAA granting recently a lot of 6th year waivers he will definitely have 2 years to play, possibly 3. Who knows how many degrees he will have by then!

Thanks for any info.

imo always had very solid spring game, probably played the best of the QB's in his last two. but could not get on the field for whatever reason in the fall.

Great student and a great person. He is more of a pocket passer who has decent arm strength. He moves around in the pocket pretty well. From what I saw, he struggled reading defenses and determining where the ball should be thrown. He took too long progressing through his reads. His accuracy was inconsistent.

All that said, there were times that he looked like he could have been our starter. This was usually in our Spring games.

As stated above, I am cautiously optimistic because of a potential upgraded in strength and conditioning.
However, we only have one JUCO so far coming in on the OL.
With the understanding that OL is perhaps the most difficult position to recruit, but IMHO is the single most important position on the offense, I will just throw this out there.

2019 incoming:
Teagan McDonald 2 star recruit, 2 FCS offers
Austin Mosier 2 star Center FCS offer from Elon
Brandon Ruff 2 star. No offers
Brandon Smith JUCO FBS offer from South Alabama and 4 FCS olffers

2018 returning:
Tony Barnett Jr 2 star(Fork Union)
Diego Cervantes 2 star So JUCO Center
Jack Hassard 2 star Fr
Andrew Lawson 2 star So
Jayce Mallory unranked So.
Jack Miller III 2 star RFR
Cameron Muller 2 star RFR 1 FBS offer from Ga State 3 FCS offers
Elijah Rivers 2 star RFR
Nick Saldiveri 2star FR 1 FCS offer (Richmond)
Nathan Thacker unranked RFR
Leroy Thomas unranked Fr
Isaac Weaver 2 star So. 1 FBS offer Ga State 2 FCS offers
Kyle Young unranked Fr

Whether you like star rankings or not, Marshall and MTSU, FIU, FAU and even UAB (those are the only ones I looked at) have multiple 3 stars on their OLs, and more importantly, those players had multiple FBS offers.
Granted that some ODU players may have committed quickly and might have otherwise gotten offers, but the fact is, out of 17 current and future OLinemen, none are rated above a 2 star, and only 2 had other FBS offers, both from Ga State.
It would appear that to bring this O Line up to a competitive FBS level within the upper tier of own conference will likely be a herculean task.

He looked his best in the 2018 spring game but never got on the field beside maybe a quarter of play vs. VMI this past fall. He is kind of an unknown around here. It's a shame he didn't get playing time during the last two seasons.

Its certainly incorrect. Not going through every player, but Weaver had an offer from FIU. He was 250 in high school, which is why he was not highly rated. Intended up being a steal.

Im not sure on Saldiveri. He had strong interest from ACC but, Im not sure if any offers came.

OK, I double checked every player on Rivals. There were no rating discrepancies, However, as you noted, Weaver did indeed have an offer from FIU and additionally Coastal Carolina as well. He also had 5 FCS offers.
Cameron Muller had an offer from Coastal Carolina in addition to the one from Ga State.
Nathan Thacker had an offer from Army.
That changes the total from two to three of 17 that had FBS offers.
The only significant difference is Weaver's FBS profile, and that begs the question as to why he was not more effective in 2018.
The above small changes otherwise are not significant enough to change my original premise.

If our O-Line is not dramatically improved, the the RPO will fail.
If our O-Line is not dramatically better, our rushing attack will fail.

If our O-Line is not dramatically better, then odufansam's and MonarchBlue's predictions of:

And, we haven't yet even addressed the Center position.05-stirthepot
