It goes back to how poorly the kids at our level are graded. (not to mention the difficulty in grading overall)

Its difficult to go back and look through every team, but you can see who graded the highest historically for every team and it's a bunch of kids that I've never heard of.

The grading criteria appears to be size and if you played football in Florida or Texas.

As I keep saying, take recruiting rankings with a grain of salt. Our best players have been either unrated, walk-ons or 2 stars. When he first committed, Ximines was a 2-star. Raised later to a marginal 3.

Which is also why you have to look at who else was recruiting the person. Oshane turned down scholarships to ECU, App State and Cincinnati to come to ODU. 3 other good programs. For too many of our recruits the last few years, we have been the only FBS offer. We need to be beating out the ECUs, App Sts, Marshalls of the world much more frequently if we want to win championships.

If you look at each recruit and the other teams we beat out. Usually you will be disappointed.

I agree the ratings may not be exactly on point but our on field performance is on par with our recruiting rankings. Until that changes you can’t say the rating system is that flawed. I personally look at the overall class ranking within C-USA and not so much each recruits rating

Wins since 2014:

Marshall - 42
LT -41
MTSU- 36
Southern Miss-33
ODU- 30
WKY- 29
FIU-29
North Texas-28
FAU-25
UTSA-22
Rice-19
UTEP-17

I don't think our recruiting rankings match performance on the field at all. I would say the only ones that would be pretty consistent with on field performance are Marshall/UTEP/Rice.

The coincidence is they recruit kids that recruiting services actually watch.

If only it was that easy though

Noye had UConn offer and other decent schools
Bently had offers from Cincy and ECU
Lowe had an ECU offer
Byrum had offers from ECU and Duke
Little had an offer from Temple
Reynolds had a UVA offer
Brickhouse had sever P5 offers including Wisconsin
Ellison had offers from Temple and Iowa
Perkins had good offers

Often times, 247 is not accurate on the offers from our players as well, FWIW.

RE: Transfers
Our seasonal performance within CUSA is VERY representative of our recruiting classes, deviating only slightly in our first season as we over-performed, but that may be at least partially attributable to Taylor Henicke.

Looking at the CUSA standings vs CUSA recruiting class rank from the accepted standard of 3 seasons forward, ODU is uncannily close to what would be predicted.

CUSA recruiting rank 247
*2012 -13
*2013 -14
2014 - 2
2015 -10
2016 -12

CUSA conference standing
2014 6- 8 tie with 3 teams @4-4
2016 7-13 tie with 6 teams @3-5
2016 1-2 tie with one other team @7-1
2017 10-11 tie with one other team @ 3-5
2018 10-12 tie with two other teams @ 2-6

*this is representative of the current CUSA members only.

It's coaching. We have plenty of talent on the field and we've had plenty of talent on the field. We need a coaching staff! I think that concept is understood. If we don't make a bowl game in 2019, BW is gone.

Seems like we have been saying that for a while now! When will it actually happen? If we don't make a coaching change, we need to leave the CUSA. Our coaching just cannot compete/recruit at that level.

Impressive indeed. Downright incredible. At this rate, he can go somewhere else and pick up 2 more. Kid may have 4 degrees when his eligibility expires.

With our schedule and the amount of new players next year ....He is gone. I believe if he has a 4-5 win season he will be retained especially has a decent recruiting class this year.

That depends. If the wins include VT, UVA, ECU, NSU and MT maybe. If we start out 1-4 and win 3 CUSA games he should deservedly be fired. Though the question would remain, if he can beat P5s, why not conference teams. I’m afraid it will be a 2 win season.

Two P5s and an extended run (3) of apparently tough road games. 03-banghead
If the below is final then....

OOC
Aug. 31 vs Norfolk State Spartans
Sept. 7 @ Virginia Tech
Sap. 21 @ Virginia
Sep. 28 vs East Carolina

Conference USA Games
@ FIU
@Marshall
@MTSU
vs Charlotte
vs FAU
vs WKU
vs UTSA
@UAB

I expect ECU to be substantially better than it was in 2018. Marshall, FAU, and UVA will likely be better. This could be the year we beat Empty Sue.
Otherwise, it is too early to really assess our competition.

As noted, with the new transfers, as well some notable coaching changes, it is far too early to evaluate our own program.
We are almost a complete unknown for 2019.
Further, our Spring game, post TH, has been a non starter as far as being an accurate predictor of upcoming seasons.

We are going in with almost as many questions and unknowns as we did in 2009.
Debates on here should be lively as we move toward August 31, 2019.

04-cheers
