FACT. Really great pickup games there back in the 90s.
Who was on the Idlewild team mentioned?
My last year playing AAU at Idlewild Marcus Moody was on team. I feel like after state we picked up Tony and somebody else, maybe Robert O Kelly? It didn’t impact my playing time because you can’t be any more lost than last man.

I think Larry was judged too harshly on Tony's recruitment, but it isn't what got him fired. Losing to Drexel is what got him fired. John Feinstein did a good piece on ESPN right after the firing that criticized the University.
What got him fired was 4 of his final 8 years he did not win 20 games and did not make the NCAA's. Included in those 4 sub 20 wins seasons was a losing season.
Penny gave him a 2 year reprieve and after Penny left Larry faltered again until Lorenzen arrived. He got another 2 year reprieve with Lorenzen and then faltered again after Lorenzen left.
It was well beyond time for a change when he was fired.
It’s odd that You can post this, yet josh was the greatest thing since Dr. James’ peach baskets, in your eyes. Never a negative word about Pastner. Only praise and constant defending. You had to be the biggest Pastner lover on this board. What really sucks is a Memphian and one of the greatest Tigers of all time and probably the most important, gets this treatment. While josh, whom has no ties to the city, and did nothing for the program, was treated like he was awesome.
Pathetic
I was prolly the biggest Pastner defender here. Even had some stupid pro Pastner signature.
I was all for giving him 1 year to see if he couldn't right the ship...and after the year...even I had to admit a change was necessary.
For Coach Finch, it wasn't so much that the game had passed him by, or that his recruiting was bad....we didn't know at the time that his health was so bad.

RE: Tony Harris
I'm kind of like the previous poster tho...will the NCAA look into any of this?
Or has too much time passed for them to do anything about it?
Question #2...and this is going to sound harsher...so excuse me in advance....
IF people knew about this story at the time this happened...WHY THE HELL DIDN'T IT GET REPORTED?
We coulda had UT's azzes NAILED TO THE WALL!!

RE: Tony Harris
Lots of us old guys knew all about this. There was one of those "tournaments" set up in Knoxville hosted by UTK. Someone was consulted to set it up and got to keep at least some, if not all, the ticket sales. At least that's how I remember it. I've noticed those "tournaments" continue today and have multiplied, sounds like many of us have bought tickets to them to see a player we're recruiting that just happens to be coming to town. Maybe they aren't NCAA issues or maybe college basketball is a little corrupt/goodoleboy/sleezy, just like the real world, who knows?

The program was deteriorating and there was a need to make a change. If you cannot accept that then you have no concept of reality.
If you can’t except that josh was destroying the program you have no concept of reality. See how that works.
He was and still is a program killer. Larry on the other hand out performed josh several times over.
You take josh and I’ll take Larry.
Joe,

May as well review the whole Corey Beck, Dwight Stewart, Elmer Martin Arkansas deal that cost Memphis and Finch a Natty.

I will never forget when he chose the volunteers over Memphis. He and I were the same age, and I had followed him from junior high. The day that he chose UT, the tomb of doom officially became the tomb of gloom. The program never recovered until Calipari.

Expecting Tennessee to get in trouble because of Tony Harris is like expecting Auburn to get in trouble because of Cam Newton. Ain't gonna happen.

I guess you are saying after the Pearl smashing, that the NCAA is going to give em a free pass this time?

I think he is say the $3C Conference like all major conferences is protected by the NCAA for TV revenue when it comes to strict liabilty clauses.
Kentucky and Anthony Davis same thing. North Carolina too.

Keith - I listened and I’m grateful to have heard Tony’s story. Knowing that he wanted to come to Memphis takes the sting out of when it happened.
Crazy to also hear Tony liked Georgia Tech. He would have been amazing under either Larry or Bobby Cremmons. GA. Tech was point guard U back then.

Time frame for recruiting violations is generally 4 years. NCAA can extend if pattern of violations extends beyond the 4 years.
