I don’t think they would match, but maybe $1 million/ year would have been enough to get him.
Not only would he be in his native Western Carolina mountains, but he would not have to rebuild a broken program.
As we know, Timing is everything.
It’s an interesting question if he would have taken App St over ECU.
He made some comments about how he admired ECU when he was younger and they were a much better team.
ECU is still the bigger program in a better conference, that hypothetically could join a P5 conference, and if he turns it around there would be setup to get strong P5 offers. That’s a big IF though, and it will be much harder to win there than it was at JMU. Maybe they go 6-5 and get to a bowl, but I don’t see 10+ win seasons there soon.
Flip side is for a little less money, it would be easier to go into a winning program at App St, more likely to have winning seasons and get that P5 job in 3-5 years.
He's making over 2x as much as Satterfield was. I'm not sure what App can pay, but I don't see them payin $1.4M+ for a HC that isn't Satterfield. Even if App could pay $1M, he'd be turning down around $2.5M total to coach there over ECU.
It’s also harder to win enough to appease the fans at ECU. They fired a coach for not winning enough.
His leash will be much shorter there.
Yeah, in a few years I see Houston joining the Scherer-Withers Club of coaches who regretted ever leaving JMU.
Scherer - maybe, but Houston and Withers should never be in the same sentence.

I think he will be a success at ECU and considering where they are now a quick rebuild may get him to the next level.

That's a fairly challenging schedule.
ECU 2019 Schedule
He's beaten the gamecocks before.
He took The Citadel to a level they have never been.
He took JMU to a level we have never been. (Dominant manner)
I think 7-5 would be an impressive result for his first year. Certainly no given.

I don’t think it’s that challenging of a schedule. NC State to open is familiar to Houston and the staff. He’ll have his team ready for that one - then two gimmes vs lower level programs in ODU and Gardner Webb. They have to play UCF but no Houston or Memphis. There is a big drop off in the AAC after that.

Looks like only 11 games in that schedule. Depending on 12th game 6-6 or 7-5 is very doable.

They are looking to line up a FCS team for the 12th game. They wanted to play URI, but VT grabbed them first.

Yep.
Tulsa, Navy, UConn, ODU should be easy wins based on last year.
SMU (5-7 last year) slightly harder.
Two likely FCS games (Gardner Webb and TBD)
7-5 actually doesn't seem that hard when you look at who they are playing. Knock off someone slightly unexpected like USF (7-6 last year), and actually 8-4 looks quite possible.
I thought it was a much bigger uphill battle until I saw the schedule. They only have 4 very good teams on the schedule, and Temple is not unbeatable. Only UCF, Cinci and NC State are super tough.
They ought to be at least 6-6 or 7-5, unless the talent isn't there. ECU fans thought Mo was a great recruiter, so that shouldn't be true.

If you compare ECU’s 2018 schedule to 2019, they should win at least 2-3 more games just based on schedule alone.
2018 they had Memphis, Tulane, Houston, UCF, Temple, Cinci (top 6 in AAC)
Plus NC State and a pretty good FCS (NC A&T)
Only “easy” games they really had last year were UConn, ODU, UNC.

I hear he was gonna build but Crozet was too far away for one of our forum members preference.

Granted JMU >>> ECU, but Temple is nowhere near as tough as UCF. Will probably take a couple years for ECU to pull off a W though.

Coach Cignetti may choose to live in a university rental like Jeff Bourne. That arrangement seems to be popular.

Yes, compared to most FBS programs they are weak.
But at 10-2, they were above average for an FCS team not in the CAA/MVFC/Big Sky. Plus I’m not sure NC A&T would have lost to ODU and UNC, regardless of what sagarin says.
Next year ... ECU plays a true scrub in Gardner Webb
Sag #231 with a 3-8 record. Plus adding another FCS game likely.
No matter how you look at it, ECU should be at least 6-6 next year just because of an easier schedule. 8-4 is a stretch, but doable. That would require beating at least one FBS team with a winning (7-6 or better) record. Above that would be an impressive turn around indeed. They do have 4 tough games that are likely losses.
