I look for him to keep Ivey maybe Clark too. I feel good about him keeping Ivey and the reason for that is because Ivey will be cheap. Sorry Ivey no offense!

Coach Drunk was Ryan Finley's OC back at Boise State in 2015 and transferred with him over to NC State.

Most of Drunk's success is tied to a potential 1st round draft pick.

Edit: Good point EigenEagle. Wiki's are not that fleshed out.

Perhaps most of the 1st Round Draft Pick's success can be attributed to Drunk? Coaches and players form a symbiotic relationship that is oftentimes beneficial to both parties. When groups of people are elevated by one another, it's generally a sign of good leadership.

Cost shouldn't be a determining factor. However, Ivey's intimate familiarity with the program, with the team, and with the defense should allow for App to continue their dominance on that side of the ball. The defense performed well despite the offense in many cases. Long droughts of no first downs plagued the offense and if not for the defense, App would've likely lost at least 3 or 4 more games.

Its a topic that has always been a bit of enigma without seeing beyond the time with a coach/QB. You need more data to make that point IMO. Which is why I did not imply one way or the other.

It shouldn't be but it is. Lets face it we are probably paying this guy close to 7 figures. That leaves little left over for staff.

App's new HC is walking into a great situation. He has a lot of talent on roster, a winning program, and dedicated alum and fan base. How he doesn't succeed will be more of a story. Congrats to App fans on getting a new HC who has ties with App and the state of NC.

Obviously hiring new assistants in place will be key to immediate success. Personally I like the more balanced attack on offense for a team like App State when you consider the climate in Boone. Good luck

HAHA

What about at ARK state? Was there a first round pick there? I do believe he was successful there.

No, but he did manage to win the Go Daddy bowl here during his year despite having a qb that couldn’t pass.

Supposedly he’s a bit of a jerk, but that apparently is only a big deal in Jonesboro

We were just having fun while waiting for game week, although admittedly it's been interesting watching the whole process unfold from the outside for the first time in a long time.

He spent more words taking a jab at us than about ya'lls new HC.

What I said is accurate.

RE: Report: App State to hire Eliah Drinkwitz
I feel pretty hopeful about DrankyDrank. I think he's more offensively balanced than some are insinuating.

At NC State:

- NC State finished the 2017 season ranked fourth in the ACC in both scoring offense (32.2 ppg) and total offense (451.8 ypg). The Pack was also third in the ACC in passing yards per game (275.4).

- QB Ryan Finley was a 2017 third-team All-ACC selection, the first Pack QB honored since 2010 - he has been named a 2018 Player to Watch by the Columbus Touchdown Club..

- Finley rank third in the ACC with 270.6 passing yards per game, while his .651 completition percentage ranked second in the league and third-best in NC State school history for a single season.

- The NC State offense had seven players earn All-ACC honors in 2017 and three players taken in the 2018 NFL Draft.

- NC State has produced back-to-back 1,000-yard rushers for the first time since 1977-78. In 2016, RB Matthew Dayes was the first at NC State since 2002 and in 2017 first-year starter Nyheim Hines also reached that mark.

- In his first season, the 2016 offense posted single-season numbers that rank in the top 10 in school history in nine different categories.

At Boise State:

- Offense ranked in the Top 15 nationally in points per game and total offense in 2015. The Broncos averaged 39.1 points and over 500 yards of offense per game this past season.

- In 2015, directed quarterback Brett Rypien to Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors, after he led the league in passing yards, total offense and completions.

- In 2014, Boise State’s offense ranked ninth nationally in scoring during a 12-2 campaign that included a Mountain West title and Fiesta Bowl victory over Arizona.

At Arkansas State

- Worked under head coach Gus Malzahn in 2012 and Brian Harsin in 2013.

- Arkansas State ranked 23rd nationally in rushing offense in 2012, averaging 206.2 yards per game.

- The Red Wolves had seven games with more than 200 rushing yards, and led the Sun Belt with 31 rushing touchdowns.

RE: Report: App State to hire Eliah Drinkwitz
A number of state fans hated him on a personal level and never got a reason from those that did.

I liked the guy.

Funny thing about the pass/run debate. His success calling plays at AState primarily came when he had our pocket passing grad transfer QB run more. Then he got hurt and did quite well with Fredi Knighten at QB. Fredi was an adequate passer but he was a very good runner.

Certainly a guy I had hoped would still be working as an OC when we needed another head coach down the road to evaluate as a candidate.

Surprised a good G5 would pull the trigger on him at this point of his career. I understood UMass hiring Bell, UMass isn't a good job.

He hires a good staff, I suspect he will do a good job.

All of Drunk's success is tied to a potential 1st round draft pick.

Brett Rypien Started most of the year at Boise in 2015.

Finley was the back-up to Rypien and followed Drank to NC State.

Not really correct. Finley was the starter at the beginning Rypien's freshman year (2015) and Rypien was scheduled to take a redshirt. Finley was injured in the third game of the season and they pulled the redshirt on Rypien and he did nothing to lose the job. Finley was hurt for most of that season so didn't really "back him up". Finley's medical redshirt was granted for that season and that is actually the reason he played for NC State this year. Otherwise he would have had his last year of eligibility in 2017.

True I did because the coaching search turned into more of well App is done the reign is over. We suffered now you suffered blah blah blah. That got old after a while. Then it appeared you all cared more about it than we did. So that got old too.

So the question was legitimate since you all seem to know more about what is going on with us than we do. He gone right?

This is the last I say on the topic. I am happy and can't wait to get to NOLA tomorrow.

I will go ahead and say it we beat yall in Boone next year.

Seems like the kind of guy who might benefit from an older coach on staff who is a disciplinarian type.

100% agreed. At some point while Gus was here Drink was in charge of a couple of aspects with our special teams if I recall correctly. The results were very underwhelming. He got a break with Harsin and we seemed to get a sort of "Malzahn lite" type offense that relied enough on the zone read and QB keeper to get our QB hurt. He was probably not ready to call plays at that time (there was some reason he was a GA for 7 years) but he has since shown some maturity. Crump is right though. He would benefit from a coach who can be the heavy and put their foot down. That is probably where he would get into trouble if he ever does. All that being said, he would get an interview here if we had an opening. Most likely a good hire.

This would be a concern for me particularly with Malzahn passing and the following public resentment. May be a reach but ego's sink ships. We'll see. Congrats App.04-cheers

Wasn't this like 8 years ago? He would've been 27 at the time? Surely no other 27 year old who was being held down in a position they felt they could do better than showed a bit of their ego? The results of when he finally got the raise and promotion he desired speaks for themselves.

It's interesting, all of these tales from a guy as a Graduate Assistant. He was probably not read to call plays at that time, yet without him you wouldn't have won the conference. If you had him this year, perhaps you would've won the conference again.
