I remember when we booked these teams Bobby and Wood were looking ahead and said we should be fielding a pretty strong team in 2019. Shuler Bentley should have been a Senior and we were still coming off winning seasons and reasonable recruiting classes. Bentley was a huge flop and the recruiting dropped significantly. Thus we are quite possibly looking at a one or two win season next year. That Bentley fiasco really hurt the long range plan.

It all falls back on the defense. If the defense can be anywhere similar to how ECU's defense was this past year, we will be ok (not great). That largely depends on if the new DC can implement his system and have bodies along the DL.....not worried too much about LB and defensive back. I think the young guys are an improvement in the secondary.

On offense, it all falls on the QB.

RE: 2019 ODU Football Schedule
We will be stacked at LB if we run the 3-4 as half of them will be DEs and we have some good ones coming in. The down linemen are a question, especially at the Nose.

All on the QB???
It is that philosophy that got us into the Bentley fiasco and blowout losses. It is all on the OL...or at least it should be.

We have a good enough offensive line (as well as RB/TE) to perform well offensively, as we did last year. When BL came in and improved our QB play, the offense was outstanding. Good QB play makes WRs look better. If we have good QB play, the team will be good offensively. If they do not, they won't.

We lost Nick Clarke.
IMHO we have one proven O-Lineman, Isaac Weaver, returning from an otherwise very slow and marginal OL in 2018. I cannot see how it will be any better, if as good.

We have compensated for literally years worth of marginal OL play with exceptional QB (DW and BL) play and exceptional receivers.
We no longer have proven receivers, and with DA gone, no real scrambling QB. We don't yet know if SS can extend a play. SB could not, SW could not, and nothing in SS's highlights indicates that he would be so inclined.
Our rushing game has been predicated on pass-first. Our rushing attack has never worked until we started to open it up with the pass; because of inadequate OL play.

Both SS and SW are pro style QBs who can also run vertically.
If there is inadequate pass blocking, and if there is no initially open receiver, will either of them scramble or just tuck and run?
Neither will last long if if that is the only option, and certainly SW has shown little ability to throw accurately on the run, and as of yet we don't know if we have the receivers for that anyway.

Bottom line;
It won't matter who is at QB if the O-Line doesn't perform.

BL didnt have to scramble for his life. This was because he takes the coreext depth on his drops and gets rid of the ball.

Pur best OL were Barnet and Weaver. Clarke was really solid. The right side was a trainwreck.

Our running game has been consistently good befor the past 2 years.

We dont need scrambling QBs to avoid sacks. We need proper depth and good decisions.

RE: 2019 ODU Football Schedule
This looks to me to be one of the toughest schedules we have ever faced. With a new DC, a new defensive scheme, an influx of JUCO players, loss of two 1,000 yard producers at WR, loss of an outstanding QB -- well, it's just not realistic to predict a winning season -- even for this eternal optimist. I will be ecstatic if we end the season bowl eligible.

That said -- Go get 'em Bobby, and let's go Monarchs!

P. S. Hopefully I can revise this thought after spring training!

We might get smoked but I'm just going to enjoy the fact that we have these kinds of opponents on our schedule. It has to be great for our program's recruiting in the long run.

Serious question, do you think recruits are more impressed by getting smoked by UVA, VT, ECU, Marshall, FAU than by beating Sun Belt and MAC teams and going to a bowl? I think the VT win was impressive, and that cant happen unless you play those games. But I also think 2 or 3 P5s in one season is too much for our squad at this time.

That is my concern with Wolff too. Until our O-Line improves we have to have scrambling guys who can extend plays.

I get your point but the "beauty" of playing these teams is that they come here to play and we're not just chasing a check. Having VT, ECU, UVA, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest and others coming to Norfolk is good for the program's overall health. Pretty remarkable actually when you type out the list.

Do you guys know how many tickets will be allocated for ECU? I imagine many Pirates making that game. I'm bringing 7.

Not sure the answer now that we have a new stadium opening this year. The most ODU has allotted for a school was 2000 seats to VT. I think others only get 1000. With the new stadium not much bigger, I don't think that number will change much.

2k is what we've given in the past to VT, NCSU and UNC. Would imagine ECU gets a similar amount.

Really? I know Virginia Tech had it in the contract to get 2000 but CUSA teams only get 1000.
