AP Top 25 BB Teams by Confernce
I thought it would be worth noting with Buffalo in at #17 this week how the MAC stacks up.

B1G: Michigan, Michigan St, Wisconsin, Iowa, Ohio St.
ACC: Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Florida St
B12: Kansas, Texas Tech, K-State
SEC: Tennessee, Kentucky
WCC: Gonzaga
MWC: Nevada
MAC: Buffalo

This is pretty good to see the MAC in there when the MVC, A10 and the AAC don't have any representation. Leagues a lot of people think are a step up from MAC basketball.

And, of course, top to bottom they are.

I think the story is more the MVC and A10 spent on basketball for a couple of decades while the MAC was building up football.

MAC is upping the investment level now.

And here are the Massey composite top 15 conferences in the land, MAC checking in at #9

1. Big 10
2. Big 12
3. ACC
4. Big East
5. SEC
6. PAC-12
7. AAC
8. West Coast
9. MAC
10. MWC
11. Missouri Valley
12. Atlantic 10
13. Southern
14. Ivy League
15. Conference USA

So in terms of true mid major conferences, MAC ranks #2 behind West Coast.

seems about right. i still consider the MWC conf more of a high major than mid major. they almost always have teams that win the the ncaas, play in mostly big arenas with good crowds and are among the biggest schools in their state. the AAC is also a marginal high/mid major league. the A10 sorta toes that line. what i think we are seeing this year is less of a separation between conferences 1-32 or whatever. there are swac teams going on the road and beating ranked power conference teams. tons of "upsets" by supposed mid or low majors. fordham could win the A10. Auburn the SEC. Arizona state the pac12. furman beat 2 final 4 teams. buffalo and nevada could be in the top 10 together by christmas. st johns is finally good again. outside of the typical duke, UNC, michigan state, kansas, kentucky powerhouses there is a ton of competition.

You are correct. For basketball MWC is a power or major conference. Pretty impressive for MAC to be ahead of a power conference

Meh the MWC is anchored by Boise State, Nevada and SDSU lately. Wyoming? Fresno State? Meh... It's pretty mid majorey. Kent State, Akron, and Ohio have as good of names as anyone else in that conference for basketball.

I agree, it just that it is not considered a mid major for basketball. For football yes. I think we can pound our MAC chests like UCF claiming the national title last year and say for at least this year the MAC is a power basketball conference. If MWC can be artificially given that status then we can boast about it when the MAC is out performing the so called "power conference"

WAC-16 was a power conference in basketball in its time. Utah St, Nevada and Boise were not part of it.

MWC split kept football strong in the face of BCS pressure but cut into basketball strength.

MWC 2.0 lost two of its best basketball programs in BYU and Utah. Its solidly a G4 conference now. Utah flipping to PAC from MWC put a lot of distance in between the two conferences.

What about high mid major? Conferences that overall perform at the 2-3 bid level.

Power: ACC, B1G, XII, SEC, PAC, BE, AAC
High Mid Major: WCC, MVC, A10, MAC, MWC

AAC I'd consider power with the salaries/budgets in that conference.

MWC in the next tier down at this point.

I'd put us a step behind high mid major. This season? Maybe. We will see. I like mid major. There has to be a category without the word major in it at all. Like the SWAC and Patriot league are 15 seeds at best. Why do we call everyone NOT power mid major?

I like power, high mid major and mid major D1 basketball.

There is a big distinction between power and everyone else.

There is a more subtle distinction between high mid major and mid major. A national TV deal for basketball. Salaries are a few hundred thousand higher. Recruiting overflow players from the power leagues and in some cases having as good of talent as them.

Mid major ranges from good D1 teams to teams that belong DII or lower with respect to their talent level. MAC for a while dropped down to this level but now I think its back to power conference overflow.

games at boise state, wyoming, SDSU, Nevada, New Mexico have good teams playing in front of 8-10,000+ fans with a lot of local attention. might not be kentucky, louisville or indiana, but they certainly compare in caliber and energy to Penn St, Rutgers, NW, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, TCU, Baylor, etc... your mid to lower sized P5 programs.

Really, the theme this year is parity-it's an overused word in sports but applies this year. West Coast, PAC12, MWC are very comparable. The top 2 teams out west are not from the PAC12 and the middle of the MWC and West Coast are pretty solid. The Atlantic Sun and the Southern Conf each have 2 teams in the top 60 and the Southern has 5 in the top100. The IVY has 2 top 100 teams. The MAC has the #12 team and 4 in the top 100. The SWAC has a team that has beaten typically strong programs from the Big12 and PAC12 on the road. There are typically strong SEC and ACC programs sub 200 in the rankings. Just noticed 2-6 Montana St won today at 6-2 PAC12 Wash St...

I think we are seeing a little bit of a response to the increase in player transfers and the decline of many hard core fan bases. Players with options are sometimes choosing programs from smaller conferences that emphasize basketball or have a good program culture or fan base because the experience is as good there as it is at many of the power conference programs (outside of the blue bloods). A power conference school that signs a top recruit often loses them in a year or two to the draft if they excel, or to a transfer if they don't feel comfortable there.

Finally, this might be a one time things so to speak for the MAC. The top MAC teams so far - UB, Kent, Toledo, CMU, Ball St- are loaded with good seniors. Next year will involve a lot of rebuilding and there weren't a bunch of stud recruits signed in the early period by MAC schools.
