For those who don’t want to expand the playoff...yet feel that ALL teams should have a playoff access path, I present to you: STFU Saturday.
It’ll be the last Saturday in October every year. It’s part of the regular season. By then I think it’s safe to say that the race for the top G5 Access Spot is down to no more than 16 teams.
Every G5 conference selects two teams for that bunch, the other 6 are selected at-large based on ranking and still being in the running for their conference title.
Your top 8 G5 teams HOST 8 P5s. The next 8 G5 teams travel to play at a P5.
It is then up to the P5 commissioner overlord, or any knowledgeable message board P5 fan poster, to slot the P5 teams to take down each and every G5. The P5 goal on this glorious day is to make the G5 fans “STFU”. And with the benefit of picking the specific matchup, many years the P5 will go 16-0.
But on the other side of the coin, any G5 who wins on STFU Saturday is now eligible for the Playoff (even if it’s still just a 4-team playoff). More importantly, any undefeated G5 who survives STFU Saturday is actually GUARANTEED a playoff spot REGARDLESS of where the committee ranks them (the same auto-bid courtesy is also extended to any undefeated P5).
We can start scheduling STFU Saturday in early October and start announcing hosts and matchups by mid-October to give fans and teams plenty of time to get hyped and get ready!!!
Of course there’s more to STFU Saturday, as most P5 fans will be bored out of their skulls watching P5’s stomp down on lowly G5 teams. That’s why the other 3/4 of college football will be going OOC in Conference Showdown Showcases that day.
SEC will take on B1G & ACC.
B1G will also play PAC.
ACC will also play B12
And finally PAC will play B12.
The 4-6 games between paired conferences will also be for bragging rights and in case of a sweep... full on “STFU” rights.
Same thing for the G5 OOC:
AAC v MWC & CUSA,
MWC v Sunbelt
CUSA v MAC
MAC v Sunbelt
But of course the main reason for STFU Saturday is to give the top G5 their chance to prove they belong in the conversation... when our (somewhat broken) scheduling system and committee playoff selection system excludes half of the field.
