WBB Game 9: W&M (5-3) vs ODU (5-2)
This Saturday the Monarchs will play our old rivals, the Tribe of William and Mary. This will be the 94th meeting in school history, where ODU holds a 71-22 edge. At least that is the way W & M counts. ODU will tell you that it’s the 56 wins to 7 loses with a 52 game win streak in between. You see ODU only counts the NCAA games. The truth is, these two schools have been playing basketball for years…back when it was a club sport.

Last season ODU lost 58-75 in Williamsburg. The Tribe won 16 games last year, which tied for fourth most wins in school history.

This season the Tribe was expected to finish sixth in the CAA. They have a 5-3 record so far. RPI ranking of 189 and SOS ranking of 283. Let’s take a look at their schedule….

Vs VCU L 55-72 Record: 6-2 RPI: 56
Vs Howard W 88-75 Record: 5-2 RPI: 253
@ Loyola (MD) W 65-49 Record: 0-8 RPI: 327
@ Davidson L 65-76 Record: 3-5 RPI: 306
Vs East Carolina W 63-43 Record: 5-2 RPI: 149
@ Hartford L 45-50 Record: 3-5 RPI: 169
@ Fairfield W 60-54 Record: 2-6 RPI: 246
VS Richmond W 65-55 Record: 1-7 RPI: 304
@ ODU Record: 5-2 RPI: 29

The Tribe’s Starting Five
10 Eva Hodgson G 5’9” Fr 8.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 3.3 apg, 37.5 FG%, 25.0 3P%, 73.9 FT%, 30.8 mpg
30 Victoria Reynolds F 5’10” Jr 10.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 2.3 apg, 49.2 FG%, 50.0 3P%, 84.0 FT%, 31.6 mpg
02 Bianca Boggs G 5’8” Sr 15.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 4.5 apg, 2.6 spg, 41.1 FG%, 28.1 3P%, 77.1 FT%, 35.8 mpg
11 Nyla Pollard G 5’9” So 5.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.1 apg, 31.8 FG%, 27.8 3P%, 27.8 FT%, 28.0 mpg
25 Gabby Rogers C 6’1” So 4.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 0.3 apg, 48.6 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 83.3 Ft%, 21.6 mpg
Key Bench
12 Harper Birdsong G 5’10” Rd-So 9.1 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.9 apg, 44.6 FG%, 45.5 3P%, 57.1 FT%, 17.9 mpg
15 Emma Krause F 6’2” Fr 5.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 0.7 apg, 36.8 FG%, 42.9 3P%, 62.5 3P%, 14.9 mpg

Pollard is from VB’s Princess Anne and Birdsong is from Nansemond in Suffolk. Boggs is a preseason CAA first round selection and it’s easy to understand why. She leads the team in every major category and is one of the team’s best defenders. She will be the challenge. But Reynolds is a nice player as well. From beyond the arc, Birdsong, Pollard, and #5 Misha Jones are your three point threats. This is not an offensive team, but they are really good on defense.

Inside the numbers.
……………W&M…ODU
PPG………63.2…72.7
OPPG…..59.2…..70.1
FG%.....41.4…….36.3
OFG%..39.4……..37.1

OpRPG..34.1…45.0
APG…….15.1….12.7
TPG……18.6……12.3
SPG……8.8………8.1
BPG…..3.0………3.0
Ast/TO ratio:
W&M: 0.8, ODU: 1.0

I guess one thing Karen Barefoot did do was take a lot of pressure off when we lost to William and Mary in her first year. We had something really special. But it would be nice to get back to winning. Specially after last week’s game against NC State. This should be a fun one. Turnovers have been costly for the Tribe this season. That could be the difference in this ballgame.

Great write as always Aviewfromthestands2

They aren't very big, and we have played very well against teams of similar size. I believe we have an advantage in depth and quickness. I hope we see more traps and full court pressure this game. I believe we can turn them over with our pressure.

W&M are a very well coached, disciplined basketball team. Should be an interesting game.

ODU wins 83-69. Shame that we still aren’t pulling a better crowd for the ladies. Trust me, come watch one game and you’ll want to come back. They deserve more support.
