I was breathing a deep sigh of relief after the final 10 minutes. We took control but it took a long time.

At first I winced when Tray got the T, but he really got the crowd into the game and reassured UTM this is his court. Loved Mladen’s steal and dunk. Good looked fine to me (not to be dismissive of a real injury).

Ugly basketball for a lot of the game. We are going to be hurting if we don't get some things fixed, but yes I know its still early. Some nifty passes by Armus tonight. Pull for Furman to win their next few, so we can have a packed Freedom Hall with a chance to knock off a top 25 team.

Our slow starts, turnovers and poor foul shooting are concerns. Here's hoping we can straighten some things out during the upcoming road tests and get some quality wins and confidence going into the Furman game.

My friend said that maybe they should scrimmage like an hour before the game so that they think it's the second half when the game starts! Second halves have looked much better than firsts. These awful first halves will dig some holes we just can't get out of in conference play.

Anyone else enjoying the passing between Armus and Rodriguez?

I am hopeful that many of our problems will be fixed when Bo gets in the flow of things. So far, he has either been injured or on the bench with fouls. One would think that getting better production out of Armus and having Bo to the level we saw him last year would improve the entire flow of the offense and make it less perimeter oriented.

RE: Official Game Thread: UT-Martin
I have been giving a lot of consideration to the amazingly slow start of the Bucs in recent games and have come to following conclusion :

Pregame : Someone, who's motive is not completely clear to me, shows the team some home movies featuring a series of family picnics, all of which catch sketchily in the background pickup basketball games at various public parks. The team assumes that these movies are intended as some last minute coaching instructions and try their best at the beginning of the game to emulate the confused and disjointed images that they have viewed.

Halftime : The ETSU coaching staff : "Whatever it is that you're doing, stop it. Play as we have shown you in practice."

Second Half : Bucs play like a normal functioning team.

I grant you I have no sources for this scenario, but it seems as plausible an explanation for the poor play and lack of coordination and aggressiveness that plagues the Bucs in the beginning of recent games. They still play with a lot of guts, though.

I hope you are correct. He has a more balanced offensive game and a year's worth of judgement/experience about when to drive or pull the trigger on a 3 pointer and the physical tools to help on defense.

RE: Official Game Thread: UT-Martin
UT Martin was a hustling, athletic team. But sloppy, undisciplined and, except for Preston Parks, poor shooting. It seems like everybody has the green light to toss up anything they like at any time. They are the kind of team that will beat themselves if you stay disciplined and give them half a chance to blow it. In the first half though, the Bucs didn't do that. It seemed like too many players took a look at the Skyhawks and thought, well, if you want to play that way, we can do that better than you. And just played their undisciplined way. Their team really just seems to beg you to try that. The Bucs took the bait.

- first several times down the floor the Bucs made it clear that UT-Martin had no answer to our inside game. So we promptly committed several dumb fouls and would up with our bigs (Armus, Rodriguez and Hodges) on the bench most of the first half in foul trouble. We even had to risk playing Rodriguez with 2 fouls in the first half, which, fortunately, he's smart enough to do;
- Daivian Williamson decided to show them that he was a better athlete than they were, and tried to dribble single handed through double teams on the press, resulting in several turnovers;
- Patrick Good made repeated slow, telegraphed passes for easy interceptions. These guys are quick enough and experienced enough to spot and grab the lazy pass. Altogether we made 10 first half turnovers
- they flat outhustled us down the floor several times for easy baskets
- they outhustled us on the boards, going toe to toe with 21 apiece
- their zone gave us trouble - it was a good call against our offense and we did not solve it till half time adjustments, the second half return of our bigs and better shooting

So a VERY frustrating first half against a team that was not really good enough to be 5 points up, 33-38.

And then the Bucs decided to play like they can the second half.

We kicked the defense up a gear, did not allow easy cuts to the basket, and let them fire away from 3, which nobody on their team except Preston Parks can hit at an acceptable rate. But which no one on their team can resist firing up. Resulting in holding them to 24 points (compared to 38 in the first half) on 30.8% shooting. With the Bucs knocking down 47 points instead of 33. Instead of playing them even on the boards, we got 24 to their 8. In short, we played like we should, and the result was what it should have been.

Lots of nice second half performances. 5 second half assists and 6 rebounds from Armus, with a great steal, length of the Court dribble and slam. 9 second half points from Good on 3-7 from 3, with the dagger go-ahead 3 - he loves the big shot. A nice turn on the floor from Bernard who had a key three and a tremendous tip in after a missed free throw. Hope he continues to get confident. Tray Boyd had 12 second half points Bo has missed a lot of time and continues to struggle to find his way. The Bucs should really look a lot better once he does.

Preston Parks just looks out of place on the Skyhawks. He's a really fine offensive player, knocking down 20 points on 2-4 from 3 and 8-8 from the line, with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. At least basketball wise, The Citadel was a much better fit for him. Imagine what a threat the Bulldogs would be if they had still him on their team.

Excellent summary, swvabucs. (The whole post.)

Trivia question: Who was the next freshman after Steph Curry to lead the SoCon in scoring in SoCon games?

Well, obviously I wouldn't have posed that unless the answer was Parks (22+/game, and was freshman of the year two years ago - for those who've forgotten).

He only got a waiver to play this year about 2.5 weeks ago, after being dismissed from the Citadel team last season, barely over 1 year ago.

RE: Official Game Thread: UT-Martin
Forbes was on the radio this am with Bobby & Kenny. He said the 1st half problems vs. UT Martin revolved around turnovers, defensive transition, ball screen defense, foul trouble, and offensive cutters not stopping on their cuts in the middle of the zone.

He addressed the TO issue by saying, "sometimes you have to hit singles instead of home runs." He said his team is doing a very good job sharing the ball and half of the TO's in the first half were player's trying to make the extra pass. He said he was concerned with the 5's on the team and their Assist/TO ratio. Said they have to a better job of handling digs and doubles. Did praise Jeromy and Mladen for their passing ability but said they had to take better care of the ball. He praised Tisdale for having a near 3:1 Assist/TO ratio and said the team was 19th in the country in total assists.

He said the team has to do a better job of getting to the FT Line and making FT's. He said Armus and Rodriguez must use more shot fakes to draw fouls and Hodges will draw fouls at the rim once he gets his timing back. He said Good, Boyd, and Tucker would probably not go to the line a whole lot because they were better from 3 than 2. Commented that Tisdale, Williamson, and Curtis needed to continue to put pressure on the D via dribble penetration.

They talked about Jeromy's rebounding. He said Jeromy had a nose for the ball and goes after the ball with 2 hands. He rattled off some impressive rebounding numbers for Jeromy and where he's ranked nationally.

Was asked about Furman being ranked and he said it was good for the league but went on to say how he found it interesting that Furman was ranked at 10-0 [he called it 7-0 because they have 3 wins over Non D1 teams and said we only had 6 wins in his mind] and how we won 16 games in a row last year during the "guts of the season" and was not ranked. He said Furman was getting a lot of mileage out of the wins over Nova and Loyola. [he said Loyola was 5-5] He commented that had we beat Xavier last year, we would have been ranked as well. Told his team it's a long season, need to keep improving, and not get caught up in what other teams are doing.

Talked about the team being in Finals and a little bit about Illinois. He said he watched the Gonzaga vs.TN game and really enjoyed it. He said that he and Barnes had become pretty good friends and Barnes called him last week to give him a hard time about getting tossed at Wofford. He mentioned that Mark Few was an Assistant at Gonzaga when he was Idaho.

I was only able to hear a portion of this morning's interview. Thank you for the summary. Of the part that I did hear, I loved Coach Forbes' mild, matter of fact review of Furman's recent celebrity. If Furman were to play Villanova now, I think it would be a somewhat different contest. Coach is correct that the Furman win over Loyola-Chicago was hyped too much at the time; Loyola Chicago is a shell of the team that excited interest in the tournament. A less generous person might suggest that there were a number of teams that could be ranked ahead of them. Early season rankings don't stand up, largely, to critical scrutiny. It will be interesting to see how the Bucs match up with then when the time comes.

As further evidence of the absurdity of early season polls, I submit the AP top 25 poll of some writer in Michigan which does not include Duke, Kansas and Tennessee because he refuses to vote for any team which has played only at home or at a neutral site.
https://collegepolltracker.com/basketbal...018/week-6
Oh, and he has Furman at #19.

According to him if you also lose on a neutral court that doesn't count against you?
