He still would have accepted the ND position but surely he would have coached the game.

I thought I remember hearing Kelly mentioned after the fact that if we made it to the NCG he would've coached them. Granted talk is cheap with impossible hypotheticals, but still I agree coaches' egos are too large to pass up that opportunity.

He was on the Dan Patrick (national) radio show. Patrick directly asked him the question and Kelly said "I'm playing for the national championship."

Can't imagine anything better. The culmination of so much for those who emotionally invested in uc football for a long time (for me since the Tim Murphy era for rag probably back in the 1940s)

Close...but a couple decades early.

RE: December 5, 2009
I made the trip to the game by myself from Toledo after my friend who was a Pitt friend bailed last minute that morning. I remember driving through a lot of snow and getting cursed out by seemingly hundreds of different people as I made the walk from the parking lot to Heinz Field. I ended up watching the game standing against a concourse fence with a handful of other UC and Pitt fans (who were relatively friendly). All of the UC fans I was with stayed pretty subdued over the course of the game but absolutely exploded when Pike made the pass to Binns - I was just about in tears.

Best sporting event I ever attended as well by a good margin.

I told my wife if we just get it to 14 down it will be game on, then Gilyard ran it back. The Pit fans had verbally abused us throughout the game. Binns made the catch and we made the EP and I looked for them but the weasels have run away.

A great drive home!

Told by whom? There was no committee. It was computers and about 150 voters who never talk to each other.

UC was ahead of TCU in the BCS ranking. Many of the human voters already had TCU ahead of Texas, so a Texas lose would have hurt TCU more than UC.

I don't know. I heard him saying it 2009/10 while driving by the Blue Goose in Sharonville. He didn't site his sources. I just assumed his contacts were better than mine. I'm surprised I remember that many details.

We're lucky we didn't finish 2. We would've been further embarrassed under a bigger microscope.

I was ripping Mick, not UC. Big difference.

And you wouldn't find someone cheering louder for that 2009 team at Pitt than me. But I knew what our fate was in the Sugar Bowl even before the first snap. Maybe the newbie CFB fans in this forum, at the time, weren't aware of just how badly we were outmatched.

That game would have been a lot closer had GAs not been coaching the team when the coaching staff bailed. Not many of us knew about that at the time. Hindsight is always 20/20.

UC was not going to beat Florida, the UC defense was just not all that great. But with the full coaching staff, UC would have scored earlier and more often in that game.

How wise of you to forsee our downfall. Only the most astute are capable of realizing that 2009 Florida, with Urban Meyer in his last game and Tim Tebow as well, coupled with over 20 NFL players and fresh off a loss to Alabama, was good.

And our team had a diminished staff, my understanding from a few player's parents down in NOLO was practices were often disorganized, little consistency, didn't seem like staff wanted to be there. Honestly the bowl prep for that game sounded like a complete disaster.

When I ran into half our starters at 2:30 in the morning the night before (or to be precise, morning of) the game on Bourbon St. I should've quickly mortgaged the house for Florida to cover.

Football office staff's spouses were actually recruited to play a coaching role on the field during the game.
