Not really.

First, Notre Dame didn't participate in the de facto first round this year; Alabama didn't participate in the de facto first round last year.

Second, only the SEC CCG was a de facto playoff game this year - win and you're in. The ACC and Big 12 CCGs were were win-or-else, but then established the order for the beauty pageant. Texas and Pitt weren't getting into the playoff if they had won their CCG games. Ohio St., Washington and UCF DID win their CCGs ...yet didn't reach the semifinals.

The CCGs are NOT a de facto first round. They are conference showcases that influence the CFP rankings and help the selection committee to establish playoff spots, but mostly affect the non-playoff bowl bids.

They are primarily made for TV money grabs.

Right. The conferences own them free and clear. They arent giving those away.

Wait ... your point in saying that "the CCG's were a de facto first round" is that ...
  • one of the five were
  • one spot was handed out independently of the CCG's
  • two of the five were auditions for one of the two teams
  • one of the five was a audition to be the back-up, in case one, or possibly both, of the two auditioning teams failed at their audition, and still possibly being left out against the loser of the first dot point above, and
  • one of five had nothing to do with who was in the CFP

???? That seems a long way from what anyone could reasonably describe as "a de facto first round".

reminds me of New Yrs day watching bowl games with my Dad
all day trying to figure out the national champ
CFB does not have to fit in a box, it's not the NFL
with 4 team pods & 6 team playoffs
CFB post season always has been unique, that's why it's so popular
in effect, CCG are defacto 1st round

I would. There is zero desire or conversation at the university president level to provide any impetus toward an 8 team playoff. Coaches are generally not for it because it compacts recruiting even more and a strong year with 4 in the CFP doesn't get them in trouble. The larger the playoff field the more heat they get for not making it. The players don't want another end of season game in which they might suffer a career ending injury. And, the fans of the CFP teams already chafe at having two extremely expensive neutral site games back to back. Moving to 8 means ESPN who owns the rights to the bowls would have to appease another 4 bowls to back that move to a field of 8 and that would mean another neutral site road game meaning the fan bases of the finalists would have 3 to pay for. Everyone knows that if that happens nobody shows up for the first round and they instead save their money for round 2 and hopefully the finals.

So it's a whopping flop of an idea logistically and there is a mountain of issues to be worked out before you could even begin to get any of these groups on board. But it's one hell of a message board agenda for those who don't play, don't coach, don't run a network, don't run a university, and don't travel to away games and bowls.

It's all about money. They used to play 11 regular season games. You could go back to that and every school would get a break of one game except for the 2 playing in the final game.

How many people go to every NCAA tournament game?

Only for certain conferences.
