The same Rutgers program that-
hasn't had a winning season since 2006?
never made the NCAA tournament in the Big East?
Hasn't made NCAA tourney since 1992?
hasn't won in NCAA tourney since 1983?
That's hardly solid in my book....
What you described is history. By solid, I am meaning competitive in the present day. Its a program that has been in the shitter for a long time and finally is making a turnaround under a very good coach, hence they have become solid. They are recruiting well. Last year they were a few plays away from making the Big Ten championship game. This year they have been competitive in every single game and will at least compete for a shot at the tournament, and probably at least make the NIT. They are trending up, unlike the football program.

Looks to me like Rutgers was bowl eligible 8 of the 10 seasons before joining the B1G and are on a four year stink fest but five years ago represented the B1G in post-season and trounced UNC.

With a challenging non-conference slate including the juggernauts that were Washington State, Howard and Tulane and their combined 11-25 might. To be fair, they did beat decent Navy and UMD teams.

those were the remaining Schiano recruits and the first year Flood recruits. The class that Schiano had locked down before he left for the Buccaneers was a top 20 class (which then a chunk of them left for warmer waters when he jumped ship, not to mention Saquon Barkley also changed his mind after committing). After they graduated it went downhill fast because neither Flood nor Ash could recruit or coach well, and the administration is too cheap to fire them when its time and replace them with someone that knows how to win at the FBS level.

They're projected to go only 13-17 this year. That's not going to get them anywhere.

On the flipside, you need "bottom feeders" to prop up the top teams (only so many losses to go around). If your bottom tier teams can also bring in money, that's a good thing I guess.
Let's put it this way, if for example you swapped out Rutgers for say Notre Dame, then either Notre Dame would no longer be a top tier team (on the field), or one of the teams currently at the top, would be bumped down. Sort of a zero sum game, with 9 of 12 games being within the conference.
Every single member of the Big 10 adds value that would be nearly impossible to replace.
There's no other conference you can say that about.
Probably the least valuable Big 10 school is Indiana. Compare Indiana to the 3rd most valuable school in the Big 12 (Kansas) or a middle-of-the-pack SEC school (Kentucky). Indiana has about the same football and basketball tradition as KU and UK and is clearly more valuable in every other respect. Much better academics, double the number of living alumni (690,000), in a much larger and richer state, and IU is right in the geographic heart of the conference with very strong rivalries.
Except Rutgers.

Stony Brook and Buffalo have won conference titles in recent years more than Rutgers.

Rutgers lost to Fordham today. So much for being solid.
