Now if educators are passing kids along that are incapable of doing the work required to pass a grade - that's a problem. But if the only justification to not pass a kid to the next grade is behavior and attitude alone - I don't think that will happen.
The area that I think we screwed the pooch on in our country is mental health. Back in the day, you could get someone committed if they are mentally unfit. That no longer happens in today's world. Plus, it looks like mental health problems are swept under the rug because of privacy issues (ironic since we lose privacy everywhere else) and because Big Pharma wants to peddle their pills in lieu of engaging in more comprehensive treatment for individuals who seriously need it.

You can still get someone committed (I've done it). Problem is, everyone now is an armchair shrink and we aren't allowed to "judge" anyone for anything. If someone is off their rocker, they aren't weird or abnormal, they are unique. After all, what is normal but a fake social construct?

As to parents and teachers that was of course a bit of hyperbole.
As to the bold portion of your statement, I give you Rep. But I might add that in my professional capacity I had a number of families who suffered the burden of having no place to confine an adult child with severe bipolar disorder. The states have abandoned providing institutions for the very people incapable of normal societal involvement. Their parents homes are wrecked by these 35 to 40 year old impaired individuals who frequently physically terrorize their older parents, and law enforcement saddles the family with them and then holds the families accountable for their behaviors and uses said behaviors to search their homes and charge them if anything which is contraband is found there. It's a horrible position for the parents and an abandonment of the state's responsibility as much as the borders have been a Federal abandonment of responsibility until recently!
