Maybe a little bit of karma for Southern Miss. Gets beat by one SBC team, uses the hurricane as an excuse not to travel and play another SBC team that is inland, and in the mountains. Most likely would have lost, but this game would have given them an opportunity for 7th win, and likely guarantee a bowl invite. However, they were still in line to get a bid until their conference mate (Marshall) schedules an extra game to make up for a cancellation, against Virginia Tech. Game is meaningless for Marshall, but gives VT their 6th win, and takes an invite from USM.
