Boca, huh?
Hi, y'all. I don't know anything about your team or the MAC. Wanna talk about our teams civilly, or do we have to go through all the posturing and smack talk?

UAB, when things are going right, is basically an old fashioned SEC team. Stout defense, especially run defense. Strong running game. Big play and possession receivers. Ball control and kicking game.

We're glad to be here. Four years ago today our program was shut down. The UAB fans fought raised hell and lobbied and fund-raised and brought the team back. Eight wins and a bowl, which we lost badly. This year ten wins, a conference championship, and a bowl against another conference champion.

But, uh, we're not just glad to be here, if you take my meaning.

Wanna chat? It's not like we're going to give away state secrets that aren't on the video.

The posturing and smack talk is between NIU fans on this board LOL. We're usually civil to other teams' fans if they aren't ripping on us.

Its impressive that UAB was able to overcome the shutting down of the program. It seems like the 2 teams are similar. Should be a close game.

Normally the talk between mid-majors is pretty civil and constructive. the P5's tend to talk smack with the "not worthy" cr@p.

NIU and UAB should be a good game, tqo conference champs going at it.
And for being a cold weather team, NIU seems to like playing indoors or in the heat. DeKalb winters are as close as you can get to Siberia and still be in the US.

Years ago we had fun with Troy and Auburn on this board. Lately nothing at all with our OOC opponents.Do recall, though, that Alabama was behind the elimination of your program. And you know we are 1-0 versus the Tide.

UAB defeated UAT when they got their program back. Winning CUSA was icing the cake.

Thus, this is the “1-0 vs Bama Bowl”.

They refuse to play us in football and MBB, which is fine by me. We've played once in hoops, when the NIT forced us on them. We beat them on their home court, 58-56.

We also have a win over Saban when he was at LSU. On their homecoming. 03-nutkick

RE: Boca, huh?
Here's a useful tool. Check the stats for team defense. We won our championship because of five red zone trips that MTSU made they only got one TD. 3rd and 4th down defensive efficiency is out the roof, #8 in total defense, #9 in scoring defense.

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/...t/team/701

We don't really have that one disruptive guy, it's team defense all the way. We have an amazingly nimble 350 pound nose tackle, two Jack LB/DEs that are 6'7" and 6'8" and hard to throw over, and a talented and well coached defense in general.

RE: Boca, huh?
I'm not sure any of us know what NIU is or will be on offense, before the last 16 minutes of the conference championship game, NIU had roughly 9 or 10 straight quarters of some of the worst offense you can imagine, they couldn't run, they couldn't block, they couldn't throw, they couldn't catch, they couldn't call creative plays....and then boom, something happened and everything clicked.

For the majority of the year, NIU has been a team that needs long, many play drives to go and score, they try and wear you down doing that, but for most of the year, we haven't had big play makers (but maybe that's changed!). Statistically, we were one of the worst offensive teams in the country.

Defense...is where they've made it happen, and assuming they're healthy, it's a really fun defense to watch. 2 great defensive ends (with some depth), a set of LB's that are all great hitters and tacklers, a secondary that's been decent, but has had some injury issues. As with all defenses in college football, teams have gotten some streaks on them, but they've also gone through halfs/games where they've completely shut teams down.

Special teams, i'd consider decent, nothing fancy.

Coaching...lol, no comment, touchy subject around here.

They beat Alabama A&M if that’s who you meant. Not Alabama-Tuscaloosa. They are actually 2-0 all time vs Alabama A&M but never played the Tide. Beating Alabama in their first game back last year would have been some feat. Maybe I’m missing the sarcasm but thought I’d mention it.

Huge respect for UAB and what you had to endure. So many of us followed the story when the program was cut then resurrected. I still think it was fear that UAB was building a very good program that might detract from Alabama-Tuscaloosa, which prompted the decision to cut the program. Really excited about this match up and meeting some very classy fans.

I think he meant that by successfully lobbying to reinstate the program they defeated Ala-Tuscaloosa in the state house. Wasn’t the guy who axed them the grandson of Bear Bryant or something? Little known fact: Bryant is considered one of the earliest hipsters with his trademark houndstooth fedora!

RE: Boca, huh?
Paul Bryant, Jr., Bear's son, has hated UAB for thirty years or better. He is one of the richest and most influential men in the state, and was on the Board of Trustees until he hit the age cap and was forced off. That age cap has since been removed, but he is not back on the board. OTOH, about 1/3 of the BoT is employed by Bryant Bank and do what they're told. He has screwed us over a number of times, most notably when we had Jimbo Fisher hired for 600k (half of which was to be paid by our boosters) and the Board stopped the hire as "not fiscally responsible". This was when they were in the middle of hiring Saban, and since Jimbo had been his OC at LSU they wanted him to be available if Saban wanted him. And so it goes, at least until they finally went too far, too blatantly, and it blew up on them.

Our athletic program was started by Gene Bartow, the MBB coach who succeeded John Wooden at UCLA. He was the guy who followed the legend, and nothing he did was good enough. He started our MBB. If the UA Board of Trustees had in their wildest dreams thought that we'd start a football program, we'd have no athletics at all. Bartow was known as "Clean Gene", because he didn't cheat at recruiting or curse. He was a darn good coach and a fine gentleman.

In any case, after a couple of recruits of ours were stolen by Wimp Sanderson at UA, Bartow wrote a letter to the NCAA in which he said that there was a culture of cheating at UA which was part of their culture under Bear Bryant. He pointed out a number of Bryant assistants who had become head coaches and promptly got their teams on probation, guys like Charlie Pell, Danny Ford, and Pat Dye. The letter got out, and PBJ has never let a chance to screw over UAB athletics go by since.

That's the "in a nutshell" version.

UAB was once an extension campus of UAT, and became a full university in 1969. UAT tends to treat us as though we were still an urban commuter school. We're also a very diverse school, while UA is still very much an old southern school. We are part of the UA System, along with UAH in Huntsville (PhD heaven, NASA) and UAT. UAB is the largest employer in the state other than the state and federal government, and brings in about 70% of the system's cash. Thus we'll never be allowed to leave the system and have a board of our own with our best interests in mind. It's corrupt as hell, but 2/3 of the state legislature graduated from UA Law, so...

It's more that UA considers any recruit we get, any t-shirt we sell, any ticket money or advertisers we sign with to be money out of their pockets. They are the 800 lb gorilla - and they are the ones who make decisions for us.

I don't know of another case where the biggest financial boosters of a D1 school have near absolute control over another in-state program. In general they let us do what we want within reason everywhere except in matters athletic. Bryant, Jr. went so far as to form a sub-committee of the BoT (Comprised of him and two of his closest cronies) who had to approve any athletic expenditure over $100k before it could even be voted on by the board.

Basically, we have brought the program back by paying for it out of pocket. We're not allowed to issue bonds as is normal in D1. It's a helluva story, but it's long and your guys really don't want to hear all the crap we've been through.

It's amazing that we have a team at all. Bringing it back, 8 wins and bowl in year one and 10 wins, a championship and a better bowl in year two? It's been a remarkable ride, and for those of us who suffered for years it's a freaking miracle.

Hope for a great game, nobody getting injured. Good weather seems a lock for a mini-vacation. Good luck to you as well. It is a pleasure visiting your board. I've been on a number that were somewhere between snotty, actively hostile and just plain mean.

I'm not sure how much luck Huskies have against Dragons. They're crunchy and good with catsup. >grin<

Not sure how much luck you'll have with our D-line either, but that stuff will get settled on the field soon.

Thanks for the backstory. I find it very interesting and rather sad there's so much control/bias. NIU has had its own issues with a State legislature that couldn't pass a budget for over 3 years and an ESPN deal that forces us to play midweek games in November with very little rest in between games. Basically, the program has run on a shoestring budget with a dwindling fan base that is tired of the terrible MAC schedule. We really do mean it when we say NIU does it "The Hard Way".

C-USA is an interesting test case for those who want the MAC to ditch ESPN and go back to Saturday games. C-USA ditched ESPN midweek plan for Saturday games on Facebook and ESPN+ and 5 CBSSN games per year while the MAC and Fun Belt embraced ESPN wholeheartedly. CUSA schools each get $200K annually from media rights while MAC schools each get $833K. Is the cash and exposure worth it? Sure ESPN uses the MAC as filler but isn't that better than being invisible? Has it helped their attendance and if so has that attendance spike offset the loss in TV revenue? Is it helping them keep fans and season ticket holders?

That's a great point. The national television exposure is definitely poositive for the program. However, I think the fear is that our attendance has dropped so much that NIU football could be irrelevant in years to come. The current economic situation is not good and it forces our AD to schedule P5 games just to pay the bills, regardless of the meager amount from the ESPN deal.
