Not my first pick, but I'm pretty stoked. I'm 0-2 in UAB bowl game attendance, and that's a streak I think I might break this year.

RE: Boca Raton Bowl
I wasn't that excited about playing the Sun Belt champ but I do think UAB would take at least double the number of fans to the NO Bowl. Considering Appy has been ranked higher than the entire MAC for most of the season, it's an interesting choice. Maybe CUSA didn't want to match champions with the Belt. After FAU had to play Akron at home in their bowl game last year, I have my doubts this was all UAB's decision. Looks more strategic/political on part of CUSA. I think the winner of MTSU/UAB was going to Boca to play the MAC champ and 2nd place to NO to face the Belt champ. Crane seemed to know right after the game that we were heading to Florida.

The Boca Bowl should be the first round of an FBS playoff. Appy should be playing Fresno somewhere.

Don't think for a minute that Clark didn't have at least input on this.

Also the fact that UAB plays Auburn in hoops that same day, etc. would not have been good.

Some App State fans are going postal over not being able to play UAB for some reason.

They figured on beating us and getting good pub. That would be a helluva matchup.

Sorry, boys, gone to the beach.

For those going to the game are you planning to stay in Boca, Ft. Lauderdale or in between?

I would think that beating a team who has a Crimson scalp on their lodge pole would be a plus for the Blazers. There are very few programs with that distinction we might get a chance to play.

Hi Blazer fans! Feels like a I'm in a parallel universe since we got a close game last year and our fan base complained like no one else and this year we have a 20 hour drive and we seem fired up about it (must be the fact we're covered in snow right now). Considering both teams have been blown out in bowls the last couple years and are conference champions this year, this might be a fairly even match up. We have a strong fan base in Florida which should add up to a great time!

Our program's very existence - the greatest defeat suffered by the dead-bear-fellators since Wilson's Raiders paid their foul campus a visit - is the only Crimson scalp we need.

Flights: Southwest airlines flies from B'ham to FLL through Orlando which I recommend.
Also there is a shuttle that runs from FLL to Boca raton for $26 each way per person.

Of course uber is always available for about $35 each way. You may want to call hotels and see if they will run a shuttle to the game.

Thank you!

The google calls it an 11-hour drive. You think that's legit (accounting for traffic and all)?

Should be a good game. Your nation leading pass rush worries me. Looks like it'll be strength on strength with our rush offense vs your rush defense.

We're a lot more worried about our O vs your D. God only knows what's going to happen there.

There is a free electric shuttle service(6 passengers) that runs in the downtown area.
The home team usually is headquartered at the Boca Hotel and Beach Club. It has the
teams pep rally on Monday night at Mizner Park in Boca. The designated visiting team
has stayed at the PGA Resort 30-35 minutes north of Boca Raton in the Palm Beach Gardens area. Its pep rally is usually in downtown West Palm Beach. Plenty of hotels in the area. You will pay anywhere from about $90 to about $400 a night. The earlier you book the better. $130-$170 can get you a good room in a decent location. And of course plenty of places to eat, drinks, shop, and things to do. Unless there's a real cold snap for the game(50's for temps), game temps should be around middle to low 60's.

It’s been 10 years since I lived in West Palm, but that’s about what it took me to get home to the Gadsden area when I lived there. I’d say it’s pretty accurate.

uab is playing a conference champ in a bowl and we complain. if we were playing in new orleans we would ***** about it being against the sunbelt. if we were playing in Birmingham we would complain that it should be an away game as a reward for the team and not against a conference champ.

I’m not complaining about the bowl selection itself or the opponent, but it sucks that so many of these bowls are in the middle of the work week. I won’t be able to go again unfortunately :( .. I was selfishly hoping for Nola, Bham, or Memphis for the independence bowl.

RE: Boca Raton Bowl
Fellow NIU Huskie fan here,

Congrats on your conference championship UAB fans!

Looks like this is a matchup of strength vs. strength. Our defense and your defense. Our defense has the most sacks in the nation, with DE Sutton Smith (MAC Player and MAC Defensive Player of the Year) with 15 sacks (#1 in the country) and DE Josh Corcoran with 10 sacks (#8 in the country). The interior of our DL is pretty strong too. LB group is very good. Our weakness on defense would be our secondary with all the injuries we've had back there. Overall, NIU leads the country in total sacks with 50 (Clemson is #2 with 43), #3 in total tackles for loss with 104, tied for #4 in punts blocked with 3 (same as UAB), tied for #5 in kicks blocked with 5,

NIU's 8-5 record is deceptive, we played probably the strongest non-conference schedule of all the mid-majors with three P5 teams (at 8-4 Iowa, 9-4 Utah, and at Florida State) and at BYU. So only one of those games was at home. Eight of our opponents are going to bowl games (6-6 Miami was left out, otherwise it would have been nine).

Our weakness is our offense, our running game (which includes our QB) can be good and then there's been some games where it hasn't. Our major weakness is our passing offense. Until the Buffalo game, our QB was averaging around 145 yards passing and has a bunch of turnovers. Some of that was related to our WR's dropping quite a few balls and us playing without our top 3 tight ends for much of the season.

On special teams, our punter is very good and our kicker started off the first few games missing a lot of FGs but then became pretty good as the year went on. If i remember correctly, we haven't missed any PAT's either. Our return game is almost non-existent. Our return guys pretty much call for fair catches or let the ball go for a touchback.

One interesting factoid, NIU is #2 among all mid-majors since 2000 in wins and #23 among all teams. I'm sure everyone can guess which mid-major is #1.

All you Big Daddy Warbucks gonna pitch in for students to be able to go?

What about the large family (6) or family with young kids that can't fit a several thousand $ bowl trip into their holiday budget? You guys got them covered too?

I didn't realize we had such a posh fan base. Jet off to Boca a week before Christmas? No problem, dahling, we'll just re-schedule the trip to Aspen to the week after.

No worries. I'm sure the Alumni Society will come up with an affordable package. 03-lmfao
