I do remember 1971 though.
We went to the TC Williams/Wilson playoff game with a Granby coach and some of the players. Wilson was by far the big gun in the Eastern Region that year.
I remember Coach Ballard turning to us and saying "be glad you didn't play TC Williams. As good as "Ton" Davis, Baby Howell and Wilson are, it's boys playing men."

Although 'Remember The Titans" took a lot of "literary license", that TC Williams team was just awesome.

OK, old guy rant over.

NO, if your coach said that he was wrong. It was men playing a LOT more men. They merged all the HS Juniors and Seniors in Alexandria (pop. 110,000 1970) into TC Williams that year. As good as the '71 Wilson team was imagine if that team had also had all the players from Norcom, Cradock and Churchland to help fill in the team. Well into the 3rd quarter the score was 20 - 14. Then TCW scored twice more (2 pt PATs both times) to win 36 - 14. The Wilson team where most of the top stars went both ways simply wore down and eventually wore out facing a team that two platooned and still had reserves at every position. TC Williams had 72 players that year all Jrs or Srs., all of whom had played/started at their different HS the previous season. As for the "men" on the Wilson team Steve Philbrick became the 1st ever frosh starter at VT (as a Frosh when VT played AL Bear Bryant said he was the one player on the Tech team he wished played for Alabama) Mike Fagan was ACC lineman of the year, "Baby" Powell started at Maryland and "Ton" played at Missouri. TC Williams was great because they had the experienced players back from multiple HS, they had the biggest school ever in VA and then lucked into getting (moved from California) the star QB that was the one missing piece to their puzzle. Older guy rant who was also there. 03-old

I don't disagree with anything you said.

Great to hear old fellas talk about the old football days! Reminds me of hearing my father, uncles, and extended cousins talking about past high school football games around the holidays. They all had strong opinions about that 1971 T.C. Williams team too. Calling it a super team. Just recently I attended a celebration of life for Coach John Cooke and the old timers were still talking about that Wilson vs T.C. game. I wasn't alive to witness the game but some there claiming if Wilson didn't fumble I think they said 4 times during the game Wilson would have won. Then again I stop believing anything I hear from old coaches and football players after their 70th birthday as being what really happened in real life due to most having memory disorders. If I believed them Great Bridge would have been a powerhouse from the mid 50s to mid 80s and Coach O'Brien invented the forward pass.

Ask them (GB folks) about Lora Hinton (spelling?) and the 1969 Wilson vs GB game. 16,500 at the game and GB pulled the upset (dang, dang, dang). It was one heck of the game and if you were not in the stands 2 hours before the kickoff you did not get into the stadium. Wilson took the other 3 games during my 4 years ('68, '69. '70, '71) but that the Wilson vs GB game was always a biggie.

Yep heard all about Hinton when growing up and the what ifs if his knee didn't sideline him for his senior year which I think would have been the 1970 season. I know a few who would like to replay that 1969 season again after losing to the Crabbers in the championship game.

Every school/team TC Williams played that year, '71, was already integrated. Wilson had been integrated for years and the team was pretty much 50 - 50 with one black and one white co-captain. Wilson folks have always assumed we were represented in the movie by the team that had 2 HS All-American tackles, because we did that year, but they forgot to mention one was black and that of the 4 big stars on our team 3 were black. It is a great movie and portrays significant issues of those times but much of it is fiction and many of the events in the movie come from other incidents and in some cases other decades or are bent a bit. TCW was loaded and favored in every game they played that season. In the State Final (against Andrew Lewis?) they held their opponent to negative yardage for the game.

I always wondered about the emphasis of race portrayed in the movie.
Granby was probably close to 50-50 and by 1971 racial tensions were minimal.

I suspect the race angle was substantially exaggerated for dramatic effect.

If I'm being honest, racial divides still exist in Chesapeake due to poor city planning and school zones that don't make sense in today's time. Great Bridge was on the verge of shutting down the football program last year because of old ways of thinking.
