Didn't realize he'll be 24 in 2020. That probably would indeed work against him in the draft. We'll see what happens.

He underperformed somewhat mainly because UAB left their tackle one-on-one most of the night. He has to win that battle. Both UABs tackles played great and were the main reason there was very little pressure on the qb.

Their QB got rid of the ball really quick too. Was surprised for a freshman.

Most of the time he did get it out pretty quick. But thats on our secondary/coverage. He didn't have to go to the second and third reads. That's where time is taken. He just fired to option 1 constantly who was wide open. Also, I'd have to rewatch, but he obviously threw some deep balls which take a little more time in the pocket. Not sure if Sutton faced double teams on those.

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
if he believes he'll be drafted 3 to 4th round it's hard to argue with leaving a year early

He’s the best pass rusher in the draft, a play maker, and excellent on special teams. The only knock on his game is his size. You’re looking at at late first rounder. Possibly second round. Every team is looking for the next Khalil Mack.

And if they draft SS they will still be looking for the next Khalil Mack.

On a different note, is SS the first NIU football player to enter the draft early?

I highly doubt Sutton will be a second round pick. Someone who fall in love with him may take him in the third, but my guess is that he will be a fourth round pick.

Mack? That is a leap.

I promise you Smith is not going to be a 1st round pick. Looking at many mock drafts, the highest I have seen him is a 3 rounder. Mel Kiper does not even have him ranked in his top 10 DE's or top 10 OLB's. Most project him drafted in the late rounds between rounds 4 and 6. So unless you have inside knowledge that these guys dont, it appears he will be a late round draft pick.
I wish him the best and thank him for his brilliant career.

Yeah. 4th round at best. Probably 5th.

His production warrants a third-round pick, but he will probably go fourth round. It'd be a rip if he goes fifth...

Yeah. 4th round at best. Probably 5th.

5th round picks still get paid more than seniors on college teams. They also get a chance to prove themselves vs NFL talent. I can not blame Sutton for making that decision.

Not really that big of a leap since Khalil Mack did come for the MAC. Also I’m not saying that he is anywhere near that level but teams are looking for play makers and that’s what he is.

This sounds and looks a lot like the same thread we saw when Jimmie Ward landed in the first round. Mel Kiper is often wrong on his projections. Not just being a homer but a guy that leads the nation in sacks 2 years in a row is a top ten D-end prospect.
