RE: Sutton Smith gone?
I'm more inclined to see Smith as an OLB in a 4-3 who doesn't line up over the tackle but plays in space and rushes the qb on blitzes.

Hope it’s not a sign but Sutton received his degree with the other graduates while in Florida. Posted on the NIU Football Facebook.

It means he did graduate, which I think definitely favors, unless someone tells him he really needs another year of bulking up/film, that he'll leave for the draft.

Or become a graduate transfer at a Power 5 school.....that would hurt more than him leaving for the draft.

If you look at it with Sutton’s best interest in mind, here is what you conclude...There is only so much bulking up you can do before you compromise what makes him so special...his speed and athleticism. Another 15 lbs of solid muscle on his 5’11 frame and you start looking like an old school fullback. Staying another year would be outstanding for NIU, but negligible in terms of Sutton’s development. Plus, the minimal status gain is far outweighed by the additional risk. He’s getting married, he has his degree. He’s perfectly positioned for the next career step. Seems like a pretty easy decision.

Oh yeah...that is true, ick that would stink for us. I still think if he can be taken within the 4th round, he'd take that over a grad transfer.

Doubt he goes the Graduate transfer route. JJ proved why that’s a bad idea when you’re a hot NFL prospect. Graduate transferring works best for players trying to get in the spotlight. Everyone knows who Sutton Smith is.

Holding out hope that he comes back but only if that’s what’s best for him. There has been mention of him wanting to set the fbs sack record which I believe is 43. He’s within reach if he wants to pursue it.

The fact he is playing in the bowl game this week leads to believe he returns, but who knows?

He would have to find the right landing zone. Similar style of defense as NIU plus opportunity to step in and start day 1. If Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Kansas, Indiana had a need and was a fit, this would be the type of program. He would play against P5 competition week in and week out.

Doubt he's considering graduate transfer guys. To do so he would need to enroll in classes at the new school for next semester, which is fast approaching. You'd already know if he was doing that. My guess is that he will sit down with his family and the coaches after the bowl game to talk about the draft or staying. I think he stays though.

My guess is he sits down first with an agent. Hears what round he may go in and if that could improve enough by returning to offset the risks. I see no reason to return. He’s probably a 5th round pick this year. That’s still millions of dollars.

As much as I want SS to return for his senior year this makes sense. I just do not see how returning will help his draft position enough (if at all) to make it worth it from SS's perspective.

Maybe, but coaches have access to information on draft projections, etc. Often times, agents contact the student-athlete, but the student-athlete tends to stay away from the agent if he is seriously thinking about coming back.

I wonder if/how last night's debacle might influence Sutton's decision for next year...

Love Sutton and want him back. But wasn't he part of the debacle? Our Defense underperformed and I could be wrong but did not see him with a sack. Infact I remember the announcers talking about what a great job UAB OL did on him.
Tough loss and plenty of blame to go around, including the play of SS.

None.
Guessing the decision was made before and sealed when he proposed.
Perhaps one thing he did consider after believing in his draft-ability is age. He waits one more year he would be drafted in 2020 after having just celebrating his 24th birthday.
That's not ideal in the NFL. That's 2 years lost in the eyes of many teams.

He played awesome. He didn't get a sack but he had a couple tackle for losses and hit their QB a few times. They did a great job of getting rid of the ball quickly.

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting that Sutton played poorly. Other than zero sacks he was pretty much his usual self. He did have two tackles for loss. Was thinking more along the lines of "unfinished business," interest in becoming the NCAA's all-time sacks/TFL leader, getting a chance to play LB before hitting the pros, that sort of thing.
Didn't realize he'll be 24 in 2020. That probably would indeed work against him in the draft. We'll see what happens.
