RE: Sutton Smith gone?
That last sack against Buffalo, Smith showed some NFL ability. The way he accelerated from almost a still position to finally close in for the sack almost looked unnatural , like someone hit fast forward

I noticed that. It was like he was still and then exploding to the tackle. I actually had to hit rewind to rewatch that

Sutton is a hell of a player and a pleasure to watch! Hoping he plays his senior year in Dekalb and continues to improve his stock - selfishly- but I will absolutely respect whatever decision he makes... it's a good "problem" to have- the guy is a flat-out beast.

Go Huskies! Beat UAB.

The other piece for a guy like Sutton, some of those senior bowl things can be really important, and I'm not sure if you can go to those if you aren't an actual senior?

I also have no problem with anyone who decides to go pro and try to make money, I'd never fault that. I just hope he gets the correct advice with the best plan for him (and I have no idea what that right move is).

Nice user name...lol

What’s most impressive about Sutton Smith is his consistency. Last season nobody saw him coming and he wrecked everyone. This season everyone saw him coming, they game planned to slow him down and he still dominated. He’s an NFL star in waiting....

Imagine if Corcoran had stayed healthy all year, and out of the penalty box. Opponents would not have been able to alter their game plan to run plays away from SS.

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
Smith needs 2 sacks and 8 TFL in the bowl to become NIU's all time sack and TFL leader. If this happens he may not have that big of an incentive to return for his last season. I don't know where he is at on his graduation track. Currently he is trending as a 4-5 round pick. Another season could raise his stock, allow him to bulk up as much as possible an make him more attractive as a OLB or Hybrid DE, but there's the injury risk. I think this could push him up a couple of rounds. Late 2-3. If he goes late 3 his payout is roughly the same, but the chance to stick the 53 is higher. 4-5 round would put him at league min but may secure him a spot on the 53 man roster. That would be around 400k+.

He will Graduate in December - which makes me believe he won't be here next year..

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
If he is predicted to go in the top 4 rounds there is no reason for him to stay. If he is drafted within the first 4 rounds he will have a guaranteed contract.

I question what he has to prove, but to say if he’s a 4th round pick he has no reason to stay is just nuts. If he comes back and adds more weight he should increase his draft stock.

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
How much weight can he realistically add, without getting slower? He's only 6'0.

It’s a valid question. If he thinks he’s maxed out his weight, then yes I would seriously doubt why he would stay even if he’s only projected to be a mid rounder.

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
I doubt that he's maxed out his weight. Considering he gained 30 pounds in the last two years his gain would probably be minimal. If he can be assured of a guranteed contract by being drafted in the top three, that might be worth coming back another year in NIU for unless he's willing to bet on his abilities. I really think Sutton can be a star in the NFL as a hybrid LB/S. He would be incredibly disruptive in the league.

We need to come up with another reason then, to keep him around for next year. Somebody, think of something. Please. How about this, "you'll miss DeKalb!"

I doubt he can add much more weight without it reflecting negatively on his speed. Plus the risk of injury if he comes back could be devastating in the long run. He has led the nation in sacks the last two years so I am not sure his stock will be any higher than it is now.

Has any NIU or MAC player ever won three straight MAC Defensive Player of the Year awards? I don't think any NIU defensive player ever has.

How many NIU or MAC players have won back-to-back Vern Smith Awards? I know Larry English and Jordan Lynch, but what about the rest of the MAC.

What if he doesn't get two sacks in the bowl game? He won't hold the NIU sack record.

I don't see any NFL team taking him in the first 3 rounds this year. There's no consensus on what position he will play in the NFL for a team use a pick on an experimental player.
