RE: Sutton Smith gone?
Or, he stays, breaks all the records and goes on to be the best defender in NIU history. I know economics may drive the decision but there's something to be said about leaving your alma mater as the best.

I got crushed before the season saying Josh was a better pro prospect than Sutton. I still beleive that is the case. Sutton GREAT college player, not a NFL player IMO.
Who knows maybe they make him a blocking back, special teams player

If he has to change positions, he won’t be drafted. Teams generally will not spend a draft pick on a player that they will ask to change positions, especially such a big change from D line to DB.

You only have to go so far as NIU to see this proven wrong. English was a 1st round pick and went from DE to LB. There is zero question he will be drafted, and I think he will be a GREAT linebacker in the NFL.

Sutton doesn’t have the measurables to ever go first round.

Not going to debate that. Either way, he can still raise his stock wherever it may sit at currently.

Dear Sutton,

Please stay. That extra year will be worth a lifetime in the record books at NIU. The extra year of education (whether to graduate or for grad school) is worth 25-30 years of benefit post NFL.

Actually it just hit me, does his now fiancé graduate in May? I think your answer could be found with that answer. If she still needs another year to finish...though if she graduates and can move anywhere post graduation...

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
Interesting discussion. Selfishly I hope he stays simply because he's just flat-out fun to watch play wearing the cardinal and black. I never want to miss a play when the D is on the field, because of Sutton Smith. The last Huskie I felt that way about was in a somewhat similar position--Jordan Lynch. He, too, was a GREAT college player. Wouldn't surprise me to see him join George Bork in the College Football HOF someday, he was that unique and dominant as a college quarterback. But no one knew for sure how his skills would translate to the pros, although just about everyone on this Board and who follows college football knew it wouldn't be as a QB. Turned out, Jordan's skills didn't translate very well to the pro game. Heart only gets you so far at that level. Like NIU05 pointed out, I think Sutton is an AMAZING college player. I just don't know how his size, skills, etc., will translate to the pros. It definitely won't be at defensive end--let's be real, offensive linemen in the pros would eat him alive. I agree with Badmoon--major LB potential. Maybe safety. But in my view it would be a smart move for him to stay for his senior year, and it would be a great move for the NIU coaching staff to move him around and get him some experience/exposure at positions he might actually play at the next level. Give him reps at LB, DE and maybe safety. Can you imagine what a nightmare that would be for MAC OC's to game plan for? Final comment: If, like Jordan Lynch, the peak of Sutton's career is as a GREAT college player, award winner, QB terrorizer, team leader, you name it, then not succeeding in the pros won't tarnish his star one bit for me. (I'm not saying any of the great fans on this thread think it would for them either.) Looking forward to watching Sutton in the bowl game--just in case it's his last time playing for the Huskies!

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
Jordan’s skill set wasn’t going to translate well into the NFL. Sutton’s skill set — quickness, tenacity, nose for the ball, and high motor — will make him a very attractive prospect. Just not a first rounder...

Jordan Lynch had that same skill set.

Seems like he would get drafted but not in first couple rounds.

Jordan Lynch had that same skill set.

Except he was a QB and didn’t have NFL arm talent. He also wasn’t given a chance to develop as a RB...

He has a fiance? Does anyone know her? Maybe she could give us some Huskie insider information, now that a certain receiver is long gone.

I don't see him transferring. That would mean a risky move of having to sit a year, correct? He may declare for the draft, but I think he could improve his by playing another year. He hasn't been overly injury prone so the risk of injury should be minimal, and the potential, not only for him, but as a team is there.

If all the pieces move into place for another 2013 style season, his stock could raise significantly.

RE: Sutton Smith gone?
If he graduates in May, he can transfer without sitting a year like Johnson did this past year in going to TCU.
