College football has devolved into a popularity contest to determine the champion or maybe it has always been. I hate to beat the UCF drum because the resulting annoyance from several of their posters is unbearable. However, the current system is the equivalent of a fascist no bid contract system. Do not let the little guy compete because the bigger entity has more resources. This is un American and screams "We need a playoff." Let the kids compete.
It'd be better to forget the whole championship thing, which was created primarily to generate more money for the mounting number of broadcast and cable networks. What a championship series doesn't do is actually determine a national champion that's so deserving and obvious that it quiets all debate, as any follower of UCF football would attest. To do that, a football championship series would have to be modeled after the NCAA basketball tournament, which involves all conference champs plus other teams deemed most worthy (though not by consensus, since there are always arguments about the bubble teams). The problem with such a scenario for football is that it would involve a lot more games to winnow the field and thus result in far more risk of injury and time away from studies for so-called student athletes.
I much preferred the good old days when various conference champs and a handful of other obviously deserving teams (none with mediocre 6-6 records) played in a few select bowl games. That system worked for decades, and the resulting ambiguities in the games' aftermath were fodder for endless "what-if" debates, all in good fun. There are so many bowls now and so many "bubble" teams playing in them that they're almost handed out like participation trophies.
I can remember when the annual Rose Bowl game on New Year's was a really big deal. Now the attendant parade probably draws more viewer interest.

Regarding student-athletes and study time: FCS has a 24 team playoff; the students have to study as their chances of playing professionally are almost nonexistent. Doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Regarding number of bowls I prefer more than less; this argument against more bowls always perplexes me, as a college football fan why wouldn’t you want more games?
Regarding the old system of selecting national champs; it was as corrupt and inaccurate as it is now.

RE: Losing interest in college football
I noticed a ridiculous example of the P5 bias earlier today, and ESPN even shot itself in the foot doing it. I go to ESPN.com on my phone, and on the front page of the mobile website, they had the scores of all the college football games in progress. Underneath of those, they had two upcoming games; the SEC title game at 3:30 (which is on CBS) and the ACC title game at 8. No mention of the AAC title game, despite the fact that it's on ABC at the same time as the SEC title game. So ESPN would literally prefer featuring a game on another network over promoting a game on its own network if it involves teams outside of the P5.

college football has always been a "feelings" game for a "feelings" nation. no one knows what will happen, but they have a feeling and that's all that matters to them.

It's hard to have interest in the only sport where the national championship is not available to everybody.
And for that, I've never really had interest in it. It's a walking hypocrisy that's basically ran like a professional league at this point.
Meh, no thanks.

Great post. I feel same way. It's really a season of exhibition games without a chance for whole enchilada. This will eventually kill all conference tv money for Espn except the stupid P5 moniker teams.

Trust me, just do this.
1.Go make a trophy twice as big and twice as impressive as the CFP invitational tournament trophy.
2. Win your bowl game
3. Hold a big ass national champs presentation on field after the game

Poor MWC. They certainly lost interest tonight after realizing they're Champ will play in the Okie Dokie Bowl.

I was told at the beginning of the year that if UCF went undefeated again, they would be in the conversation. Also that Paul Finebaum would support their inclusion in the CFI.

RE: Losing interest in college football
It's going to be interesting to see how they try to make yet another [yawn] Alabama v. Clemson championship game interesting to the masses.
I don't think this CFP thing is working out the way they thought it would. All it's done is further separate the haves from the have nots.
... but the P5 have nots don't really care because they're getting paid and are just thankful that they're not stuck in the G5.
