Climate Change Cancellation Saturday Games
While the CCGs are being played today, a number of other largely meaningless games are being played due to weather cancellations earlier in the season. Some involve the same teams from the canceled game, others are between different teams penciled in late. So if CCGs and FCS playoffs hold no interest for you, here's how to watch college football all day anyway without viewing any:

Akron @ South Carolina

- probably the weirdest game. Akron's game at Nebraska was canceled by a thunderstorm while South Carolina's game with Marshall was a victim of Hurricane Florence. For some reason, they decided to find each other and play today. Available on the SEC "alternate" channel. I might tune in for two minutes.

Drake @ Iowa State

Maybe even weirder - Iowa State's game vs FCS South Dakota State was a victim of midwest thunderstorms this summer as well, so ISU scheduled FCS Incarnate Word to replace them today. Only Incarnate Word got a bid to the FCS playoffs last week, forcing them to cancel! So ISU called up in-state FCS Drake to play the game. Available on something called "Cyclones TV".

Give ISU credit - they were *determined* to play an FCS team this year.

Stanford @ California

OK, this one makes sense, as it is one of the classic rivalry games in college football. Canceled by those terrible wildfires. But it's still weird to see a PAC 12 regular season game being played after the PAC championship game. Available only on the PAC network.

ECU @ NC State

Another marriage of different partners. ECU lost its game vs Virginia Tech to Hurricane Florence as did NC State its game vs West Virginia. So they agreed to play this game contingent on neither team making their CCG. Neither team made their CCG, so here we are. Available on Watch ESPN.

Norfolk State @ Liberty

Yet another Florence casualty, but this time between the teams that were originally scheduled to play each other, way back on 9/11. Available on ESPN3.

And finally ....

Marshall @ Virginia Tech

We already know why these teams are playing (see SC vs Akron and ECU vs NC State above). This is the one game that has some meaning, as VT needs a win to become bowl eligible and consign some already bowl-eligible sixth place MAC or Sun Belt team to no-bowl oblivion. Marshall is already bowl eligible but would love to ruin this for their big-shot Appalachian mountains neighbor. And they are good enough to make it worthy of keeping an eye on - if you have the ESPN Watch app.

And about West Virginia .... they are sitting just outside the NY6 range, at #16 in the CFP rankings. A win versus a decent opponent today could have perhaps impressed the CFP enough to nudge them up a couple of spots and in to contention for an NY6 bid. But they decided not to play today. Well OK.

WVU was still in contention for their CCG a week ago. Thats pretty short notice to find a "decent opponent" to play this week.

They could have a contingent opponent scheduled, as some of the teams above did. I know it is tough to do these things, but still. Anyway, they've had a good season.

Climate change is a myth. Games get cancelled or postponed by hurricanes all the time. The week 1 games cancelled by thunderstorms were a product of the universities being adverse to risk and the visiting teams being unwilling or unable to find accommodations overnight so that they could play on Sunday.

Not really, the climate has been changing ever since there's been a climate.

I wish we could blame ECU's downfall on the climate.

I know people made jokes about it, but personally I am glad SC was able to make up the game.

7-5 looks a whole lot better than 6-5

Yes, and if the fans had fun at the game, more power to them. There are so few games, at most 7 a year.

Absolutely miserable weather yesterday, poured down rain the entire time.

But I agree. 7 home games a year and the wife and I made sure we were there yesterday

Yeah, climate change is a myth, like the moon landing and a round earth.

Climate change is a myth. Do some research for yourself instead of believing the media. I highly recommend http://www.wattsupwiththat.com

Come on fellas. The point of my header was to attract attention to a discussion of the make-up games being played on championship Saturday, not to spark a Trump vs Gore argument. 07-coffee3

Okay. Why Iowa State not ask Southern Mississippi to play instead of Drake? Drake is non-scholarship. Those teams do not count unless the NCAA givesper mission. Southern Miss. needed the 12th game.

Drake is in Iowa and Iowa State didn’t really need a win for bowl eligibliity, just a win

Why play a better team when there’s no obvious upside?

They were 2 weeks apart. Iowa State was to play an FCS team and probably still wanted/expected one, as they're more expendable. Maybe they asked S Miss later in the season but Southern Miss was looking for a more winnable game? (They missed out on @App-State; possible loss VS very possible loss @Iowa State?)

I think with more common rain-weather cancellations, as we got more than our fair share this year, we may expect to see more thought / planning pre-season to handle such endeavors, etc. Southern Miss learned their lesson if they were not on top of it heatedly, as they ended up going 6-5 not scheduling Anyone, and denied a bowl.

Drake and Iowa State have a history. 30 minutes apart. Last meeting in ‘85 cost the Cyclones a bowl game in a year they beat the #7 team in the country. Local appeal.
