President George Bush (1924-2018)
His office has reported that he died earlier today.
May he rest in peace .

I’m not sure they make men like that anymore.

RIP. Probably the last decent human being we've had as President. Hopefully there will be another in the future.

I'm not sure it's possible to be a decent human being and be president any more.

At any rate, the first president I ever had the pleasure of knowing, from my days attending St. Martin's, and probably the nicest man I have ever known.

I remember a George Strait concert at Rice Stadium. Because of my Owl Club status, I had the opportunity to buy VIP tickets. My date and I had just sat down to dinner in the Stadium Club, when Barbara Bush asked, "May we join you?" Of course we said yes, and as always with the Bushes, we had a very enjoyable time. After they left, I was thinking I had really impressed my date. She said, "If I had been president, I think I could find a better barber." So much for making a great impression.

But they were both marvelous people. Rest in peace, sir, we have the watch. May fair winds and following seas speed your reunion with Barbara and Robin.

I always amazed/disgusted how the press tried to depict him as a wimp, when in fact he was a Navy pil,ot, hardly a shrinking violet's job

The glee that the press took in trying to tear down one of the most decent men in the history of the republic was astonishing.

Even so, there were a few members of the Fourth Estate who saw it for what it was. The day after the 1992 election, there was an editorial cartoon that showed a bunch of reporters jumping up and shouting "We won!" Spot on.

The fact that so many of us have personal stories about the first family (George and Bar) is telling I think

Exactly.

Another one. When I lived in the Galleria area, I attended St. Martin’s. We had some sort of men’s event and he attended. After he left, several of us were talking about what a nice man he was. “You could be nice too,” someone remarked, “if your lawyers were Jim Baker and Joe Jamail.”

While I didn’t agree with everything either did, I feel very comfortable with my belief that both Gerorge W. Bush and Barak Obama were decent human beings. But certainly RIP to GHW Bush, and condolences to his family, including Rice alum George P. Bush.

I am comfortable believing that GWB was a decent human being, I also believe that he allowed Cheney to call too many shots, and I'm not sure that I'd put Cheney in that category. And I think Obama was a lying, narcissistic, egomaniacal ideologue, attributes that I would not associate with a decent human being.

This was not a press issue, but his opponents to the right of him.

RE: President George Bush (1924-2018)
Two of my sons and I were walking towards the Stadium Club elevator during the Navy game (2005, I think) and he was about to get on the elevator. I called ahead and said "Mr. President, could you shake the hands of a couple of kids?" The Secret Service wanted him to keep moving, but he told them to wait and they got to do so.

Totally class act. You might not agree with all of his views and politics, but one felt that he was doing or supporting what he felt was the right thing to do-no matter what. Not the politically expedient or to his personal financial benefit. With his family connections, he could have found a way to avoid service WWII or made up some bogus medical condition, but he was the youngest naval aviator at 18. How he conducted the Gulf War should be the gold standard for conducting foreign affairs. And see this: https://www.nytimes.com/1995/05/11/us/le...ation.html

Sadly, our world has become one where only tribe matters and "leaders" kow tow to the worse aspects of the lower common denominator or provide credence to extreme lunacy.

The world needs more like him.

It is ok to just keep your trap shut about something like this in a non-political thread. If you can’t say something nice...

I wasn’t aware that I wrote anything negative about anyone. Quite the opposite, I offered warm words toward two politicians on different sides of the political spectrum in an effort to show that despite differences, comity and decency are not dead. You did ... something else.

I have always been impressed with the fraternity amongst past Presidents after they leave office. I tend to think it tells us that none of them were as bad of people as the worst on either side imagine.

Changing the topic a bit - does anyone know if there is a public memorial service/viewing for Bush in Houston?
